Bloubergstrand: Where Table Mountain steals the show
Our blog will never be complete if we don’t take you along to Bloubergstrand. It’s probably the most popular spot where you can get that classic view of Table Mountain across the bay. So, let’s go for a short stroll on the beach. This is not a long post, because how many photos can you take of Table Mountain from here without each one looking exactly the same?

Iconic view of Table Mountain from Bloubergstrand
Bloubergstrand literally means ‘blue mountain beach’ in Afrikaans, and got its name from the nearby hill, Blaauwberg (231m/758ft high). It’s a residential area and attracts large numbers of visitors – especially kitesurfing enthusiasts (Bloubergstrand is one of the world’s top kitesurf destinations). Robben Island is located 6.9km/4.3 miles west of the coast of Bloubergstrand. This is where prominent political figures, like Nelson Mandela (former President of South Africa), were in prison.

Robben Island in the distance
We didn’t see any kite surfers, probably because it was a windless morning. But there were quite a few surfers, bodyboarders and SUP (Standup paddleboarders) in the water taking advantage of the good weather. And even though the water is cold because of the Benguela current, Bloubergstrand is one of the most popular beaches around Cape Town.

It was a long winter – people enjoying the water
We took a walk along the beach and headed in the direction of Table Mountain. It’s a view we’ve seen countless times, but I will never get tired of it.

With such a stunning view, I could easily sit on this bench for hours

Table Mountain – again

Rocky part of the beach
When we drove to Bloubergstrand, I told Berto that the weather was in our favour for that first ice cream of the season. So, we decided to turn around and head to one of the many little ice cream cafés at the main beach.

On our way back to the main beach
On the way back we walked past Blue Peter. This restaurant is probably one of the most popular spots around Cape Town. We’ve eaten here a few times, and their pizzas (and cocktails) were always good – with a view like that, there’s not much to complain about.

A very busy Blue Peter on a sunny weekend morning

Back at the main beach
For me, there was no doubt about which ice cream to choose from the wide variety on offer – for many years, my first ice cream of the season was always a vanilla soft serve in a sugar cone with a flake – that still hasn’t changed (yes, I’m that predictable).

The best ice cream is the very first ice cream of summer
We considered for a moment walking back to Blue Peter for lunch, but after seeing how many people were there, we decided to make lunch at home. It was ultimately the better option, I think – with music in the background, busy preparing food in the kitchen and a bottle of wine, these meals are always the best!

Home cooked meals are the best
Bloubergstrand gave us a morning of pure delight. Nothing compares to the breathtaking sight of Table Mountain rising across the bay. If you find yourself in Cape Town, make sure Bloubergstrand is on your list; it’s the kind of place that turns a simple beach walk into a memory you’ll treasure forever.

Nothing beats the view of Table Mountain from Bloubergstrand
Beautiful, I could never get bored of the view either.

Beautiful Corna, I hope I get to see Table Mountain through my own eyes one day.

It’s definitely better to see it yourself – I hope you get that opportunity someday, Marion.

Oh yes, the iconic view. But in my experience it has always been incredibly windy there being sandblasted! Unsurprisingly popular for windsurfing.

Yes, the southeaster can blow mercilessly in Bloubergstrand. Luckily, we’ve always managed to catch it in good weather (but we always keep a close eye on the weather before taking a trip to Bloubergstrand 😉). On a lovely calm and warm day, it’s one of the most beautiful places to be.

And I love the fact your first ice cream of the season is what we call a 99.

I never knew my favourite ice cream is called a ’99’. I actually had to go Google it just now and saw that there are quite a few reasons given for the name – interesting! I can just imagine the reaction of an ice cream café here in SA if I ask for a ’99’ 😂.

Table Mountain is so prominent that it actually doesn’t matter where on the Cape Peninsula you are, you’ll always have the mountain in your sight. But there’s no better place than Bloubergstrand to see Table Mountain in all its glory.

That view of Table Mountain is iconic. What a wonderful beach that is and with such a view – wow. I would stay all day too, especially if I had access to sort serve vanilla ice cream with a flake! My favourite as well! As you are warning up we are cooking down. I feel it in my bones!

You can actually see Table Mountain from pretty much anywhere when you’re in the Cape Town area, but the view from Bloubergstrand is definitely the most beautiful! Ah, so we share the same ice cream taste – I actually don’t eat a lot of ice cream, but there’s just something special about that first ice cream when the worst of the winter cold is over. I’m so glad our days are starting to get warmer now – like you know, I really love summer and I’m so happy that I can finally ditch all my layers of clothes 😁.

Another great post with so many beautiful photos, dear Corna. I just love the beautiful blue sky, the waves, endless long sandy beaches and an amazing view of the legendary Table Mountain. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Oh my, Corna, breathtaking scenery is correct! I agree with you about lunch at home; with music, wine and good conversation; it’s the best. Wonderful post and photos.

It doesn’t matter how many times I see Table Mountain from Bloubergstrand – it remains one of the most beautiful views. Indeed, we love being in our kitchen, preparing meals and just relaxing. Isn’t it sometimes the simpler things in life that are the most enjoyable?

Thanks Linda. It’s one of those beaches that’s beautiful in any weather – when it’s windy, the kite surfers are happy, and when it’s calm and sunny, it suits the rest of us 😉.

Can’t beat a soft scoop vanilla ice cream with a flake Corna 🙂 The coastline and table mountain views are stunning.

It’s funny: I’m not really a big lover of ice creams (cocktails are more my thing 😉), but there are few things as delicious as the first soft serve ice cream of the summer! Indeed – seeing Table Mountain from Bloubergstrand is one of my favourite views.

Mal oor jou roomysfoto!

I’m glad you didn’t miss our Table Mountain post – after all, it’s the most iconic view of this famous mountain from Bloubergstrand. Yes, the blue sky and blue sea are characteristic features of South Africa – something I will never get tired of!
