Every Thursday we will throw a few photos of ‘way back when’ on our blog. Why on a Thursday? Because it’s just a day away from the weekend … and we love weekends!

August 2016 – Cederberg Mountains (Western Cape Province, South Africa)

We have now introduced you to the Cederberg Mountains twice in our TB Thursday posts. Just in case you don’t believe us when we say we love these mountains, here’s another throwback post about a visit to this beautiful place.

Before we get to the Cederberg Mountains, we just want to show you what a beautiful sight we saw on the way there.

Since it was the beginning of spring, we were hoping we would see flowers on the way to the Cederberg Mountains and my oh my, we were not disappointed.

We invited friends together for the weekend and stayed in Sanddrif Holiday Resort. It is located on the farm Dwarsrivier (home of Cederberg Wines) and is approximately 250km north of Cape Town. There are fully equipped self-catering cottages as well as a lovely camping ground under tall trees. We have camped here before but decided to stay in a cottage as our friend was pregnant at the time.

It is a great place for nature lovers and adventurers as there are plenty of day hikes, mountain and rock climbing, mountain biking, bird watching and stargazing to be enjoyed. Rock art is nearby and one can also taste wine at the Cederberg Private Cellar (they also have craft beers on sale).

One morning we decided to take a short walk to the crystal-clear water of the Maalgat Pools and saw lovely fynbos on the way.

As always, we enjoyed our weekend in the beautiful Cederberg. The great thing about a visit here is that you can either be very active or just enjoy a quiet weekend.

On the way home, we drove over the Du Toitskloof Pass between Paarl and Worcester. This was initially an animal track where a road was built around the time of the Second World War. We stopped at one of the viewpoints from where we had lovely views of the farms in the valley.

  2. Ek hou so baie van die Sederberge! Ek het ook n soortgelyke foto soos jou eerste een! Daai Maalgatpoel foto is so pragtig! Daar is darem niks soos die ooptes en die reuk van die veld daar in die Berge nie. Pragtige pos, Corna!

    1. Die Maalgat poel is ‘n gewilde plek in die somer – so koud soos dit daar raak, so warm raak dit! Dankie Aletta, ek dink julle kan sien hoe lief ons vir die Sederberge is. Ek wens ‘n mens kon die reuk van die veld ook vasvang soos met ‘n foto …

    1. Hmm, I knew you would like the spring flowers 🙂. We were usually in a hurry and would rather drive through the tunnel, but it sure is so much more beautiful over the Du Toitskloof Pass, isn’t it? Glad it brought back some memories.

      2. I can believe that, but we’ve never done it! Usually, when it’s still dark, we drive through the tunnel … and when the weather is nice (and it’s daylight) over the pass 🙂. But then again, the tunnel didn’t open until 1988, so one had no choice but to drive over the pass in those days.

    1. And the colours in the Cederberg are always so beautiful! Our friends already know – when we say we’re going to the mountains, it’s the Cederberg Mountains – and they usually can’t wait to see what new place we’re going to discover!

    1. Dit is ‘n pragtige deel van ons land. ‘n Mens kan in elk geval nie vinnig ry op hierdie grond paaie nie, so ons kan net sowel stop en foto’s neem. Gelukkig is Berto baie geduldig wanneer ek se ons moet stop … dan drink ons sommer koffie net daar langs die pad tussen niks en nerens. Dis die lekkerste vir my!

    1. Dit was nou ‘n lekker storie om te lees Tannie Frannie! Dawid Nieuwoudt, aan wie Cederberg Wynkelder behoort op die plaas Dwarsrivier, was saam met my in dieselfde klas in Clanwilliam. Ek het ook in ‘n vorige post van ons besoek aan die Stadsaal Grotte vertel – wat ‘n pragtige plek is dit nie, ne! Dankie vir die deel … dis sulke mooi (en tog ook bekende) foto’s.

    1. As you will know yourself, sometimes it is just better (and more comfortable) to stay in a cottage than to pitch a tent 😄. On its own, the Cederberg Mountains are spectacular, but covered in wildflowers, it makes them look even more beautiful!

    1. Thank you very much Marion. I really hope you get the opportunity to drive around here one day … I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. And as you can see, you don’t always have to camp here 😉 – there are beautiful cottages and even 5-star accommodation.
