We all have these photos … throwback photos!
It’s described as ‘nostalgia-inducing pictures … from a different era of your life”.
Every Thursday we will throw a few photos of ‘way back when’ on our blog. Why on a Thursday? Because it’s just a day away from the weekend … and we love weekends!
You are welcome to join in or just enjoy the photos (#TB Thursday).
August 2016 – Cederberg Mountains (Western Cape Province, South Africa)
We have now introduced you to the Cederberg Mountains twice in our TB Thursday posts. Just in case you don’t believe us when we say we love these mountains, here’s another throwback post about a visit to this beautiful place.
Before we get to the Cederberg Mountains, we just want to show you what a beautiful sight we saw on the way there.

A carpet of orange spring wildflowers
Since it was the beginning of spring, we were hoping we would see flowers on the way to the Cederberg Mountains and my oh my, we were not disappointed.
We invited friends together for the weekend and stayed in Sanddrif Holiday Resort. It is located on the farm Dwarsrivier (home of Cederberg Wines) and is approximately 250km north of Cape Town. There are fully equipped self-catering cottages as well as a lovely camping ground under tall trees. We have camped here before but decided to stay in a cottage as our friend was pregnant at the time.

The tranquil Matjies River on Sanddrif
It is a great place for nature lovers and adventurers as there are plenty of day hikes, mountain and rock climbing, mountain biking, bird watching and stargazing to be enjoyed. Rock art is nearby and one can also taste wine at the Cederberg Private Cellar (they also have craft beers on sale).

One morning we decided to take a short walk to the crystal-clear water of the Maalgat Pools and saw lovely fynbos on the way.

The sweet smell of fynbos was a joy on the way to the pools
As always, we enjoyed our weekend in the beautiful Cederberg. The great thing about a visit here is that you can either be very active or just enjoy a quiet weekend.

On the way home, we drove over the Du Toitskloof Pass between Paarl and Worcester. This was initially an animal track where a road was built around the time of the Second World War. We stopped at one of the viewpoints from where we had lovely views of the farms in the valley.

We hope you enjoyed our throwback posts about the lovely Cederberg Mountains. We can’t wait to go back there soon.

Daai Maalgatpoel foto is so pragtig! Pragtige pos, Corna!

Die Maalgat poel is ‘n gewilde plek in die somer – so koud soos dit daar raak, so warm raak dit!

You are right Ritva, it is indeed a rugged landscape. It’s such a beautiful area and a weekend is way too short to visit there!

Yes, it’s always great to see wildflowers. Just goes to show you … it’s not always about the destination, but also about the journey 😉.

Me too … even though I might suffer from hay fever for weeks afterwards 🌸. But it will all be worth it!

Beautiful spring flowers. And memories of that pass over which I have travelled many, many times.

Hmm, I knew you would like the spring flowers 🙂. We were usually in a hurry and would rather drive through the tunnel, but it sure is so much more beautiful over the Du Toitskloof Pass, isn’t it? Glad it brought back some memories.

The pass was quite scary at night! I have driven through the tunnel though when I was over there in 2008.

I can believe that, but we’ve never done it! Usually, when it’s still dark, we drive through the tunnel … and when the weather is nice (and it’s daylight) over the pass 🙂. But then again, the tunnel didn’t open until 1988, so one had no choice but to drive over the pass in those days.

Nature is truly amazing with those brilliant colors! I can see why you love the Cederburg Mountains and sharing it with friends.

And the colours in the Cederberg are always so beautiful! Our friends already know – when we say we’re going to the mountains, it’s the Cederberg Mountains – and they usually can’t wait to see what new place we’re going to discover!

Dis die lekkerste vir my!

The best time to walk (for us) is always early in the morning. Getting up is sometimes hard, but it’s always worth it 😉. Thanks Maggie, enjoy your weekend.

How nice to return to the incredibly scenic Cederberg Mountain and treat yourself by staying in a cottage. The views are beautiful, along with the various wildflowers.

As you will know yourself, sometimes it is just better (and more comfortable) to stay in a cottage than to pitch a tent 😄. On its own, the Cederberg Mountains are spectacular, but covered in wildflowers, it makes them look even more beautiful!

Thank you very much Marion. I really hope you get the opportunity to drive around here one day … I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. And as you can see, you don’t always have to camp here 😉 – there are beautiful cottages and even 5-star accommodation.
