As mentioned in our previous post last week (read here), this will be the second and final post of our camping weekends towards the end of 2025.
Our BIG wild camping adventure at the end of 2025 and beginning of 2026 will follow soon.
November 2025
Camping weekend at an old favourite next to the Breede River
I can’t remember how many times we have camped at Rivierzicht River Resort over the years, but I do remember that our friends’ kids were still very young the first time we went there, and now some of them are already married.
Rivierzicht is without a doubt one of our favourite campsites in the Western Cape. After living in the Eastern Cape for three years, it was time to go back to see if anything had changed since our last camp in 2020.

Tranquility next to the Breede River
Rivierzicht River Resort, in the heart of the Robertson Wine Valley, is only 159km/98 miles from Cape Town. This makes it the perfect weekend destination for those campers who live in the city and are looking for a weekend getaway not too far from home. Here you will not only find many shady campsites along the Breede River, but also bush camp tents (permanent tents on wooden poles) and cabins.
The bush camp tents and cabins are a great option for people who don’t want to bring their own tents/caravans/camping trailers along, but still want to be close to nature. We have stayed in the bush camp tents before and really enjoyed it. This weekend, however, we decided to tow our Metalian trailer for yet another relaxing camping weekend.

Side note:In preparation for our wild camping adventure in December/January, there are now a few extra additions to our trailer. Since we enjoy preparing food while camping, we have expanded the kitchen side of the trailer with a Metalian drawer for herbs/spices to make it easily accessible. One of the compartments is also now a dedicated coffee/tea station. We tested it during this camping weekend and were happy to see that it worked perfectly.

The sunset was as spectacular as we remembered from previous camping weekends at Rivierzicht. With a glass of crisp white wine, we sat by the fire to enjoy the colours of the sunset. Our dinner was homemade burgers on the fire.

We woke up on a beautiful, windless Saturday morning. I love this early morning tranquility next to a river.

Beautiful morning next to the Breede River
We wanted to walk through the campsite to see what had changed since our last visit, but first it was time for breakfast. No surprise here when we made our favourite ‘Yellow Sands River Brunch’ (read here).

Breakfast time
While we were enjoying our breakfast, we saw several people on the water. Some were in fishing kayaks, while others were on their stand-up paddleboards.

Campers relaxing on the river
On our walk through the campsite, it was clear that not much had changed since our last visit four years ago. The grass was still green and the grounds were well maintained. We agreed that the trees were definitely taller and denser, which is probably a good thing as it provides much-needed shade from the blazing summer sun.

Green grass at a camp site is always welcome

Another bush camp
There is an area where you can buy ice, drinking water, and wood. It operates on an honesty system where you take what you need and put the money in a locked box.

Rivierzicht is located on a working farm, and the road leading from the main road to the campsite is well maintained. It was wonderful to see that they still farm with pomegranates (we remember these trees from our previous visits). And, as always, we saw many flowers (although some might be weeds).

When you camp, you share the ablution facilities with other campers. There are quite a few of these facilities all over the campsite, and the cleaning staff make regular rounds to ensure that they are always clean.

Back at our campsite, we took out our chairs and relaxed under the shady area. We watched a river barge go by and also a few smaller boats with families enjoying the afternoon on the river.

Relaxing at our camp site

It was actually quite a hot day, and we didn’t want to spend too long in the sun. Hotdogs were the quickest meal to prepare over the fire, and these are always tasty with our favourite sauce, Mrs Ball’s Chutney.

After lunch we got hold of our books and pillows and spent a relaxing afternoon by the river. We were also fortunate to see a variety of birds picking up crumbs near us.

One of the many reasons I love camping

Gorgeous afternoon at Rivierzicht
In the evening Berto made another fire so that we could prepare dinner. This time it was lamb chops, curry ‘sosaties’ and ‘braaibroodjies’ – such a typical South African ‘braai’ meal.

We packed up early the next morning. The weather forecast predicted a heatwave and we wanted to make sure we were on the road before it became too hot.
This was also a good excuse (not that we actually needed one) to enjoy a delicious breakfast at one of the many restaurants along the route. We have eaten at Nuy on the Hill (between Robertson and Worcester) several times before (we have even written about our time here during one of our many road trips – read here). Breakfast under the brightly coloured sun umbrellas was a great way to end our camping weekend at Rivierzicht River Resort.

This will definitely not be the last time we camped at Rivierzicht River Resort – the tranquility and beauty you find here are just two of the many reasons why outdoor enthusiasts (like us) love this place so much.
Oooh, I love the new addition to your trailer! Also, I’ve never seen a pomegranate on a tree before, so that’s neat. What a lovely weekend! As always, I am envious of your lovely campsite.

The two new drawers in our trailer were a hit on our recent wild camping trip. It’s interesting to see how pomegranates grow β it’s something you don’t really think about until you see it, right? A lovely warm weekend in a beautiful place … we probably couldn’t ask for more π.

Yet another idyllic camping site. Love the coffee drawer π Maggie

This campsite along the Breede River is idyllic for sure. Hmm, what is a camping trailer without a coffee/tea drawer π.

Your trailer is fantastic Corna, you should start marketing them! It was great to see a pomegranate growing on a tree – I don’t think I have seen one before except in a greengrocers! Another great post. Marion

The Metalian Trailer is very popular among campers – especially those who enjoy wild camping (like us)! Years ago, we also saw for the first time at Rivierzicht what pomegranates look like when they’re growing – it’s a lovely fruit to use, especially in summer salads. Thank you, Marion – I’m glad you enjoyed it.

That sounds like a very relaxing weekend. Berto is a very handy chef to have around. And I still enjoy Mrs Ball’s chutney π

It will be difficult to go camping without Berto – he’s a man who knows how to make good food on the fire! Ah, it’s good to hear you still enjoy Mrs Ball’s chutney (a big favourite in our house) … which we bought at a high price when we were in New Zealand for 4 months π.

It’s those beautiful sunsets at Rivierzicht that make us love camping there – that and the tranquility next to the river!

It’s wonderful to go back to a place you haven’t visited for a while and find that it is still well cared for and as nice as you remember. That camp site is clearly very popular. I love the reflections in the river or that lovely summer sky. Pomegranates! Have you ever had the squeezed juice? I did once and loved it until I drank too much and it did my stomach in! Very refreshing. Your food always looks so good and so healthy.

You’re right, I don’t think it happens very often that you go back to a favourite place and it’s just as beautiful as you remember! Oh yes, I know pomegranate juice (but fortunately I’ve never drunk so much that it upset my stomach π). When we camp, we try to eat somewhat healthily (and if you plan ahead, it’s possible).

Very clever additions to your camper for your spices and beverages! Looks like you found another gorgeous area to camp in, Corna; amazing photos!

After having camped with the trailer a few times, we realised what we were missing – and the addition of the herbs & spices drawers as well as the hot beverages compartment was an absolute winner! Thanks Tricia, Rivierzicht was, as always, a wonderful place to find tranquility.

Not just “the good life”, but rather the “deluxe packageβ π. It’s unreal how beautiful the sunsets here at Rivierzicht are β I’ve never seen one that hasn’t left me amazed!

I can easily see why this is one of your favourite campsites and that you keep returning over the years. It totally makes sense for you to expand the kitchen of your trailer and to make the herbs and spices more accessible given how much you guys cook!

We don’t easily go back to a campsite over and over, but Rivierzicht is definitely the exception to the rule! Yes, I’m glad to report that the new additions to our trailer’s kitchen section worked very well during our recent wild camping adventure.

Again, another beautiful spot, Corna. You have a whole mental encyclopaedia of great camping weekend destinations!

Haha π, and I’m sure you wouldn’t be surprised to hear there are even more campsites we haven’t visited yet! We don’t easily go to the same campsite a second/third/more times, but Rivierzicht is in a class of its own!

What a lovely review of Rivierzicht River Resort; your photos capture the peaceful, riverside vibe that makes it such a special spot for a weekend getaway! It sounds like the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature; lovely π

Absolutely! Unwind, reconnect with nature, relax … all those things and more! Rivierzicht is one of those places where you forget all about the craziness happening in the world (a very good thing)! Don’t be surprised if we take our camping trailer there a few times more this year!

Ah, the serenity. I think you should write a book about the best places to camp in the Cape. You can certainly pick ’em. Mel

Oh Mel, there are so many camping spots just around the Cape … I don’t think we’ll ever get to all of them in our lifetime (but we can always try π).
