Winter camping on the water’s edge
For eager campers, like us, it is really hard to wait for summer to go camping. And with our new camping companion (read here), a winter camp is no longer such a bad idea. So, we gathered our friends to go explore a new camp site.
There are probably a hundred (or more) campsites near Cape Town, and we have quite a few favourite places that we like to return to. But we read about a new campsite, that recently opened, and it ticked all the boxes:
- It is a short drive from Cape Town,
- The campsites are spacious and next to a dam,
- It’s located on a farm,
- There are stunning views over the mountains and canola fields.
BietjieDam (translated in English as ‘Little Dam’) is a few kilometers outside Caledon. Caledon, a town in the Overberg region, is about 100km/62 miles east of Cape Town.
Now, we knew it was going to be a (very) cold weekend. In fact, it rained when we left on Friday afternoon. BietjieDam rents out wood-fired hot tubs and Berto suggested that we ask them to deliver two hot tubs to our campsites. I can’t tell you what a wonderful sight those steaming hot tubs at our campsite were when we arrived!

Hot tub next to the dam
We had hardly set up our tents when we jumped into our cozzies and then straight into the hot tub. The warm water was like a woolly blanket (and it was a bit bizarre when it started to drizzle lightly), but nevertheless a lot of fun.

That’s how you camp in winter
After the men made a big campfire, we arranged our camping chairs close to the heat of the fire. With dinner finished (prepared by the men), it was time to dive into our beds. The next morning, we were relieved to see that there were no clouds in the sky – there are few things better than a sunny day in the middle of a South African winter.

The view from our rooftop tent

Early morning at BietjieDam
Although it was a beautiful early morning, it was very cold. With the windscreen of our ‘bakkie’ frozen and frost on the grass, everyone grabbed warm jackets, scarves and gloves while we watched the sunrise.

Cold enough to freeze your thoughts

Once again it was the men who prepared a delicious breakfast. A few of us decided to walk the 1.2km/0.7 miles around the dam. After the rain the previous day(s), we had to be careful not to sink too deep into the mud. However, it was a lovely little walk and we enjoyed the views.

At first, the path was easy to walk, but later it became quite a challenge

Here is a bit of good news for those of you who aren’t so keen on camping in the winter (or camping in general). There are also other accommodation options at BietjieDam. There is a newly renovated barn with two en-suite bedrooms, as well as a glamping tent with space for four people. Both of these options have their own hot tubs that are included with your stay.

The Barn

It’s always interesting to see what the camping setup of our friends looks like. It turned out that no one brought their ground tents on this camping weekend. Three couples had rooftop tents, while the other couple slept in their off-road caravan.

You may remember that Berto mentioned in a previous post (read here) that he wants to equip our new camping trailer with a camp fridge and ice machine. Well, I’m happy to say we’ve bought both and it’s working perfectly. In the meantime, something else has been added, but more on that in the next post (I dare say that this is the best camping item ever)!

Many people often ask me what is there to do when you’re camping. Well, we enjoy hiking and sitting by the fire reading a book. At BietjieDam you can also do that, and if you like swimming, fishing or kayaking, you would love it here. Bird watchers will also be occupied with the sight of many different birds. We heard the call of the African fish eagle several times – one of the most iconic sounds of the African wilderness. Oh, and you will also enjoy stargazing at night – we had the most beautiful view of an almost full moon.

In the late afternoon, the campfire was lit again and we prepared for another ‘braai’ evening.

The next morning, we got up early again. There was a delicate veil of mist hanging over the dam. However, the tranquility was soon disturbed by a few geese that had become involved in a scuffle with each other. We watched them for quite some time until we thought peace was restored between them.

Another beautiful sunrise over BietjieDam

The early morning sun illuminated the fields and dam

The moon was still visible in the morning sky

More spectators arrive

Now everyone wants to join the ‘fight’

There was a flurry of wings and water

For a moment it seemed like everyone had come to an agreement

It’s possible that one goose muttered something about ‘emotional maturity’, and before we knew it, the whole flock was airborne, leaving behind only a few feathers
After all this drama, we all needed a cup of coffee – being a bird watcher is hard work.

Time for a last coffee
BietjieDam was the perfect place for a cold winter weekend and it was a great reminder that the best moments are often the simplest – just good friends, a campfire, fresh air and stunning views.

Isn’t it just a beautiful world? I have a friend leaving for South Africa in a couple of weeks and I’m madly jealous, Corna. You do camping in such style. I love that rooftop view from your snuggly beds. If it was wet and miserable you could just pull the covers up and stay a bit longer xx

You’re right Jo, there is so much beauty in this world of ours! Oh, when your friends come to this side of South Africa (the Western Cape), they might be lucky to see all the wild spring flowers that are now starting to bloom – it’s a beautiful sight! Over the years, we have become quite good at camping … as you get older, you also want it to be more comfortable, right?

Avontuur….stoombaddens….en die allermooiste skakerings van groen. Ek reis so lekker saam oor die eter.

My tipe naweek saam met goeie vriende, veral omdat julle so goed ingerig is.

There’s something so special about crisp frosty mornings when the new day’s sun has just risen, especially if there’s a walk amongst nature to enjoy. And doesn’t it just make breakfast taste even better!

Although I would love to stay under the warm blankets for a bit longer when it’s so cold, Berto convinces me that it’s better on such mornings to see the sunrise … and he’s usually right! Oh yes, breakfast on such mornings (especially when we’re camping) is the best!

You had me at the Hot tub next to the dam and the colourful sunrise, dear Corna. In Ireland, only the brave endure camping, so we always have to sit tight and wait for the winter pass before we get to set out.
You know, I think only a non-camper can ask such a question: ‘What is there to do when you’re camping?’ Camping is an activity in itself because it involves specific actions like setting up a shelter, preparing meals, and engaging with nature, all of which provide enjoyment and benefits independently of other activities.
I love your camp fridge – itis a wonderful camping addition because it keeps food and drinks fresh with precise temperature control. The ability to store and prepare your own meals also significantly reduces long-term food and fuel costs associated with eating out, especially during extended trips. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

That hot tub was a definite winner Aiva! Our winters are not really that cold (especially not compared to places in Europe) and therefore it’s probably easier for us to camp also in winter. It was nice to read how you listed all the great things one can do while camping – I will remember that when someone asks me next time what there is to do when camping 😉. Oh yes, the camp fridge makes camping much more comfortable – so there is no longer any reason why one should only eat canned food and bread!

That’s a lovely setting for a soak in a hot tub, especially with a sundowner drink in your hand!

If I could sleep in the hot tub, I would have done it 😁. You’re right, seeing the beautiful sunset with a sundowner in hand (inside the hot tub) … that might have been the highlight of the weekend!

Sundown drinks in the hot tub for the ladies while the men prepare dinner…just as it should be! The tub looks heavenly. It is interesting to see how many variations of camping there are. You and your friends have it covered. Camping in cold weather is brave, I must say, but the scenery in Winter is really beautiful in a whole different way. I enjoyed the goose fight! Thank you for the lovely pictures.

Yes, it suited everyone that the women preferred the hot tubs while the men wanted the warmth of the fire (and who can cook inside a hot tub, anyway) 😉. I agree, camping in the winter has its own charm … and if you are well-equipped for the cold, it is an absolute pleasure! You were on my mind when we were watching the goose fight – and I was thinking what a wonderful story you would write about this scene!

What a wonderful weekend you seemed to have had, and sharing it with friends sounds ever better. I enjoyed reading about the scuffle among the geese; just like with humans, an argument draws attention! Lovely post, Corna!

Yes, we were almost glued to the scene with the geese … and it was funny to hear everyone’s versions of what exactly was going on between them 😁. Thank you Tricia, it was a lovely weekend – in a beautiful place with good friends – in my opinion, that’s the perfect weekend.

Couldn’t manage to comment on the site itself so hoping that using the reader helps!
I’m not a camping person, but I can appreciate getting away from the city and spending time with friends in such a scenic location. But frost? You are definitely hardy campers and what a magnificent breakfast.

Fortunately for the people who don’t want to camp, there are also the option of chalets or glamping pods at most of these places (which is of course much more comfortable when it’s so cold). Let’s just say that the delicious breakfast warmed us up after the cold frosty morning 😁.

How beautiful are those views out across the lake, it’s absolutely stunning in the winter light. A sundowner drink in the hot tub with that view is my idea of heaven! 🙂

Ha 😉, I thought you would have enjoyed having the sundowner drink in the hot tub … and then, instead of moving over to the tent, you would have sought out the glamping pod, right? I agree, the views are really beautiful!

Beautiful! For me, winter camping would involve snow and is not appealing. With this scenery and more mild weather, though, I don’t think I’d mind so much.

I think you’ll enjoy camping during our winter months – it’s not extreme at all (especially if we compare it to your winters – camping in snow is a big NO). Of course, the best time to camp is during summer, but it’s almost impossible for us to go longer than a month without a camping weekend … so we make sure our camping gear is now also suitable for winter camping 😉.

Sounds like you guys have made the right decision to embrace winter camping. What a great idea to rent a hot tub! The early morning views are beautiful. And I’m sure it wonderful to enjoy the warmth of the sunshine.

Yes, I think because our winters are not so extreme, it is a good idea to go camping every now and then during winter – especially when there’s a hot tub 😉. The morning views are beautiful, aren’t they? One just has to be brave enough to get up early and enjoy the beauty … especially when it’s so cold!

What do you do when you’re camping!!!!! Well everything and anything you can do in nature. But wait, I don’t remember any pictures of you fishing, do you fish? The problem today is so many people are on the computer and phone that they don’t think about what fun camping is. Fall was my favorite time to camp and you make me so envious. Your pictures look beautiful Corna.

There are apparently people who cannot appreciate silence while enjoying nature – I know, it seems strange to me too, Diane! Life has become so hectic that something as simple as camping is no longer considered relaxing. I tried fishing, but I suspect there is a problem with my patience when it comes to this activity 😉. Thank you, Diane, BietjieDam is a wonderful place to take photos – I think one will struggle not to take a beautiful picture!

Wow – what a great find. It would be nice and close for us too. Hubby loves fishing and we both love birdwatching so it would be the ideal place or a short break-away. Your photos are amazing and the food looked scrumptious.

You will definitely see a lot of birds at BietjieDam. It was great to hear the fish eagle early in the morning and evening, and there was a such a great variety of birds. We really enjoyed the tranquility here and of course, the views over the dam and mountains are incredibly beautiful. Thank you so much, it was great to be able to take photos here and as you know, we really enjoy making ‘lekker’ food during camping weekends 😉.

Blue skies during the winter months are always the most beautiful days here in SA (while clear nights are the coldest)! Yup, we were lucky to discover this place – I can only imagine how enjoyable a summer camp will be at BietjieDam 😉.

Yes, it’s a nice spot, but is there enough shade to make it a good Summer spot too?

There are quite a few trees, but if we lack shade, there are our pop-up gazebos – you always have to have a Plan B (C, D, E, etc.) when you go camping (or hiking) 😁.

Looks like a fun time. The hot tub looks great but the ice on the windscreen reminds me why we bought a semi- off road caravan with a heater! Gone are the days for a tent or pop-top caravan for us. Cheers

The hot tubs were definitely needed at this camping weekend (actually a heater would have been great). For our next camp after this one, we bought a bed warming pad that operates on 12V power – it made camping in our rooftop tent much more comfortable. Fortunately, the cold winter is now over, and we can look forward to at least 7/8 months of warm camping weather!
