The last notes of our Namibian road trip
After 11 posts about our incredible road trip through southern Namibia, it is now time to say goodbye to this beautiful, rugged country.
On our last day, Namibia treated us to one of its most beautiful sunrises. As we drove through the plains early in the morning, we could see the day getting lighter and lighter – until the world around us was bathed in an orange glow. I said to Berto: “This has to be one of the most beautiful things we’ve seen on our road trip”.

Early morning somewhere on the road in southern Namibia

At first the sky turned into soft pastel colours

Then a hint of orange appeared on the horizon

The sun pleaded to shine

We were surrounded by the orange glow of the morning sun
We could have stood there next to the road for a long time and watched the sunrise. But it was time to move on, because we had 870km/540 miles to drive back home.

The last dirt road in Namibia

Back on the tarmac

Turn right here towards South Africa (although it would have been nice to turn left instead)
We crossed the mighty Orange River one last time and before we could blink, we were back on South African soil.

At the beginning of the bridge over the Orange River – still in Namibia

The mighty Orange River

On the other side of the bridge and back in South Africa
This road trip was more than just driving hundreds of kilometers and seeing endless horizons, dunes, canyons and wildlife – we almost felt changed in a way, the stillness of Namibia spoke to our soul.
As we approach our home, the majestic Table Mountain looms in the distance. Berto said that although we weren’t ready to leave Namibia yet, the view of Table Mountain isn’t a bad ‘second prize’.

Thank you to each and every one of you who travelled through Namibia with us. We enjoyed experiencing this beautiful country with you again through our posts.
A beautiful trip home and a fitting end to your amazing adventure. Well done! Mel

It’s been wonderful reading of your trip and your love of the country. As you know, in the end we only saw Windhoek, but I am sure we’ll be back for more…

What a wonderful and appropriate ending! I’m not surprised it had such an affect on you and coming home to that beautiful Table Mountain and the farm – not bad either! That row of trees at the farm is lovely. Thank you for sharing this beautiful trip.

Thank you for bringing us along on this wonderful trip. I have enjoyed every kilometer that I traveled with you and Berto. I always looked at Namibia as just a big empty place, but now I know that there are hidden gems all over the country. I understand now why my friends who visited there a few years ago liked it so much.

I’m so glad you enjoyed another road trip with us Carl (there were a lot of kilometers you had to drive with us 😁). Yes, at first glance, Namibia looks like a very big country with nothing but desert … but now we could show you that there is so much more than just that! I think when you have visited Namibia once, you will always long to go back – that’s how we feel anyway!

Thank you very much for travelling with us, Tricia. Yes, Namibia showed us its most beautiful side 😉 and I’m glad we could share it. Hopefully people now realise that Namibia is not just sand and dust (that too), but actually a really beautiful country.

Thank you! I’m so happy you travelled with us through Namibia – if you want to go off-road, this is definitely the country for you! As for Table Mountain – it remains one of the most beautiful sights in Cape Town and one I will never get tired of.

That’s the nice thing about blogging. You can relive your trip and we can come along too. So many beautiful sights and you brought back so many memories for me too. The sunrise on your last day was a splendid end to your trip. Next time go north.

You’re right, it was great to look back on our Namibian road trip – now it’s written down on our blog and I can go read it anytime when the longing for this beautiful country becomes too much 😊. Absolutely, the north of Namibia is worth a visit – as is the middle of the country. So many places, so little time!

It rarely happens that we can say a visit to a country has changed us (or our way of thinking). But I suspect that is what Namibia does to its visitors 😉. Thank you for travelling with us Hannah, it’s great to hear you’ve enjoyed the ride.

So many beautiful photos, dear Corna and what a spectacular way to end your epic trip. I love that you perfectly captured how the interplay of light with the dunes and dust creates a magical, golden hour effect, turning everything into a wonderful nature show. Thanks so much for bringing us on a journey through and around Namibia. Take care 🙂 Aiva xx

Yes, the African sky is gorgeous. That’s usually what I miss the most when we travel to another country. Oh yes, I love that stretch of dirt road through the trees to our house on the farm (then I know we’re away from the hustle and bustle of the city, even if it’s only a few kilometers to town). Thanks for travelling with us once again on our road trip – it was a special one, right?
