March 2025
You might remember our last post where we mentioned that we were on a quick visit to Cape Town and, while Berto had to work, I had the opportunity to visit two lovely wine farms in the Stellenbosch region with my friend, Riana.
After our visit to the picturesque Stark-Condé Wines in the Jonkershoek Valley where we enjoyed a delicious breakfast (read here), we drove towards the Helderberg Mountains just outside Stellenbosch to visit another wine farm.

A long and narrow road leads to Hidden Valley
I was very excited to visit Hidden Valley Wine Farm because their Sauvignon Blanc is one of my favourite wines. And, while their wine bottle labels are pretty simple, it’s also quite unique.

I could see Hidden Valley’s floating restaurant, The Deck from the parking area. But since we had enjoyed a late breakfast just an hour ago, we walked straight to the Wine Tasting Centre.
Note: Hidden Valley Wine Farm will undergo renovations from the middle of May 2025. Please contact them for tasting by appointment. The Deck (their restaurant) will remain open, weather dependent, for relaxed visits and breathtaking views. (Source: Hidden Valley Website)

A large bronze mask, one of many, welcomed us at the entrance of the Tasting Room. This mask is also on their wine bottles which make it easy to recognise Hidden Valley’s wines.

The views from Hidden Valley Wine Farm are breathtaking – as one might expect because it is located high on the northern slopes of the Helderberg Mountains. On one side is the majestic Helderberg Mountains and in the opposite direction one looks over the lush vineyards and picturesque town of Stellenbosch (and on a clear day I am sure that Table Mountain would also be visible).

Spectacular views from Hidden Valley Wine Farm
The wine tasting room’s large glass windows offer panoramic views of the vineyards and beyond. One can also look at the modern cellar through glass windows while tasting wine. I’d love to see what this area is going to look like after the renovations.

My friend introduced me to Sonja, who runs the wine tastings and sales at Hidden Valley. I haven’t met anyone so cheerful and welcoming in a long time. Riana, my friend, suggested that I do a wine and chocolate pairing and Sonja was on hand to offer a fun and delightful wine tasting.

Wine and chocolate pairing

I’m ready for a delightful experience
Of course, I can’t remember at all what type of chocolate went with which wine. But I can confirm that both were outstanding – the wine and chocolate! Besides their Sauvignon Blanc, I also liked their rosé wine. The Hidden Treasure Rosé with its rose gold colour and fruity flavour is a wine suitable for any occasion.

Sonja entertained me with a fun-filled wine and chocolate pairing
After a great wine tasting, it was time for us to return home. I always wondered, when I enjoyed Hidden Valley’s wines, what this wine farm looked like. Now, excuse the pun, Hidden Valley is no longer hidden to me!

As always, I also looked out for pretty flowers along the way. And just before we left Hidden Valley Wine Farm, I noticed the ever-beautiful Cape fynbos along the way. This marked the perfect end to my visit of two beautiful wine farms in the Stellenbosch area.

What a beautiful and vivid post! Hidden Valley Wine Farm looks like a true gem—stunning views, elegant wines, and that floating restaurant adds such a unique touch. The wine and chocolate pairing sounds like a dream! Definitely adding this to my must-visit list for the next Cape Town trip.

Hmmm…Work or Wine Farm!? You definitely got the good deal there Corna, looks amazing!

Berto also thought my day was better than his. No wonder Sonja, who does the wine tastings at Hidden Valley, was in such a cheerful mood – I wouldn’t mind having her job! Although, I reckon she is not allowed to participate in the tastings … that might be a problem for me 😁!

The Hidden Valley Wine Farm looks idyllic Corna and what could have been better than wine and chocolate pairings – I’d definitely have been in Seventh Heaven!

I’ve always thought that chocolate works well with wine – my visit to Hidden Valley Wine Farm just confirmed that. Thank you Marion, I share your sentiment of “Seventh Heaven”! ☺️

I’ve never had Hidden Valley, but I’ll see if we have the label here. I prefer red, but you sold me on the chocolate-wine pairings 😊 Maggie

I think you’ll easily identify their wine by the label! As a housewarming present, my friend gave me a bottle of red wine from Hidden Valley (a syrah/shiraz named Hidden Secret), and it was really good! So, whether you like white wine or red wine (or chocolate😉), I think Hidden Valley will tick all the boxes!

Wine + chocolate? Sign me up! And I’m not even much of a wine drinker, but the ones you described seem like ones I would actually like. And if not, well, what a view!

I can now confirm that chocolate definitely works with wine😉! I kind of think that people who don’t like wine that much will find the rosé wine quite acceptable – it’s a very fruity and light wine. But as you said, just the views of the mountains and valley make a visit to Hidden Valley Wine Farm definitely worth it.

You’re right, that label is very distinctive. I wonder if they export their wines to the UK? I do like a good Sauvignon Blanc so I would look out for that 🙂

I think I read on their website that citizens of the UK (and also Ireland, Sweden and Switzerland) can order wine from them and then they ship it over. Their Sauvignon Blanc is among my top 3 favourites – maybe a bit pricey, but worth it!

Protea is so beautiful and the landscape there is marvelous. Too bad Sonja wasn’t there when I went with my mum. I could have given her all the chocolate while keeping the wine for myself! It looks like a lot of fun!

The protea is my absolute favourite flower in nature – there are so many different species (I think over 1500) and each one is unique in colour and shape. You’re right, it was a day full of fun and laughter … and, of course, great wine and delicious chocolates!

Racking my brain to try and remember where we also were given chocolate (bitter, as I recall) with wine tastings. It works, doesn’t it!? In fact, I’d go so far as to say it rocks! We’re still disappointed that we didn’t get to SA last year…..on which subject, watch this space!

You’re right Phil, the chocolate isn’t sweet — it’s a darker chocolate with undertones of pistachio and berry (if I remember correctly 😉). I loved it – that’s now both the chocolate and wine! I can’t wait to hear when your SA trip is going to happen … I also have new and exciting news about our recent move. Like you said, watch this space!

What a perfect name and beautiful place! I can see why there are 6 glasses of wine if you get chocolate with each glass! 🤣

Ha😁, I’m not sure what was better – the wine or the chocolate! It’s a beautiful place indeed … definitely worth a second visit.
