November 2024
I think we can say without a doubt that the start of the official camping season has kicked off in South Africa – and we couldn’t be happier about it.
Our choice of camp site in this post should come as no surprise to most of you. Yellow Sands (also known as ‘Camping Paradise’) is only 25km/15 miles from East London and we camped twice here earlier this year – in March (read here) and April (read here).
The reason for our visit now was twofold:
- Of course, we couldn’t wait to pitch our tent again, and
- Yellow Sands will be our home for 3 weeks during our December holiday. Having already booked our camp site in May this year (yes, that’s how popular Yellow Sands is), we wanted to check on our booked camp site before our holiday started.

Our beloved tent pitched at Yellow Sands
During December, our camp site will look very different from the photo above. Berto bought a plane ticket for my mum to join us here on the southeastern coast of South Africa for our holiday so that we can celebrate Christmas and New Year together.
Besides our own tent, there will be an extra tent for my mum to sleep in. We will also have a diner tent where we can prepare and enjoy our meals (in case of the famous summer thunderstorms).
*In December, we will show you how one can camp comfortably for three weeks – hopefully without missing all the luxuries back home. (See the links at the end of this post).

It may not be a hotel bed, but when we camp, there is always a special treat
Our camp site is close to the ablution facilities. This has its pros and cons (depending on how you look at it). However, I would say that this is a big plus – especially if you have to get up in the middle of the night. And the shower may not be everyone’s idea of fun either, but when it’s hot (and it will be in December), this shower is a winner.

The toilets on the left and the unique shower on the right
In today’s post, we’re going to take you for a quick tour of the camp grounds again … just to remind you why we can’t wait to come and unwind here.
Our first night’s sunset was beautiful (as it usually is here at Yellow Sands) and we couldn’t wait to start our campfire.

Berto prepared Chicken Souvlaki on the fire with homemade tzatziki sauce (our Dish of the Week #53). After we finished eating, we sat outside by the fire for a long time and listened to all the different night sounds (which we don’t usually hear when we’re at home), before heading into our tent for a peaceful night’s sleep.

Gotto love this – camp fire & camp food
As usual when we camp, we were up early. Now that we are at the beginning of our summer, the sun rises early again and just after 5:30am we watched the sunrise over the Indian Ocean.

Sunrise at Yellow Sands
We love the calmness of early mornings here at Yellow Sands and it’s always a wonderful time to watch the rising sun cast orange and brown colours over nature.

I took out rusks from our camping box to enjoy with coffee and tea, while Berto made ‘mieliepap’ (maize meal porridge) for breakfast on our camp gas stove – can you think of a better start to any morning?

As we usually do, we went for a walk after breakfast. It was low tide and we could therefore follow the narrow footpath along the river to the beach at the sea.

With low tide, we can walk on this footpath

Low tide reveals a wonderful beach
We really like the beach at Yellow Sands. There are always different activities here, especially early in the morning – parents playing with their young kids in the water or on the beach, the launching of all kinds of boats and kayaks, surfers in the waves and fishermen on the rocks. It’s great to watch these and the pictures are never the same.

When we eventually walk back to our camp site, we pass by our favourite tree stump again (and always take another photo of nature’s work of art).

Back at our camp site we noticed a whole lot of weavers’ nests on the other side of the river among the reeds. The opposite bank of the river has high cliffs and at low tide there are always small beaches visible.

At around midday, the temperature had risen quite a bit and we decided to visit Yellow Sands café for ice cream. We saw construction work at the pool and understood they are building a coffee restaurant and pool bar. It sounds like they will be done in early December … hmm, in time for our holiday!

Much later in the afternoon we went for a walk along the river again. It was now becoming high tide and it’s interesting to see how the appearance of the river changes with the tides.

For the last time this weekend we went to cool our feet in the river before preparing dinner. (Lamb Tagine was our Dish of the Week #54).

As we watched the river rise again with high tide, we began to dream of our December holiday – we seriously can’t wait!

Yellow Sands, we’ll see you in a few weeks

What a lovely spot. I love your five star set up. It is way better than a hotel room and your meals are gourmet 😀 Your mom is going to love it❤️

What makes Yellow Sands so special is that you can either camp in the main caravan park or if you want to get away from all the people, you can set up your campsite by the river – here you are further away from the pool, café and other amenities (such as the laundry), but at the river camp we feel closer to nature. I agree – it’s much better than any hotel … because at a hotel we can’t sit next to the campfire to prepare our meals! I’m sure my mom is going to enjoy the camping experience (it sounds like she’s already started packing for this holiday 😀).

I hope you all have a wonderful time – I know you will! Sadly, the time has come for us to give up caravanning and I am going to miss it!

I’m not sure if my comment went through – here it is again (and sorry if you get it twice). I’m sorry you have to give up caravanning – I dread the day when we will no longer be able to camp. I hope this doesn’t mean you’re going to stop to visit all the beautiful parks and places in our country!

No – we will certainly be travelling as much as we can but at 80 my hubby is finding towing and setting up camp too challenging. Once we have sold our caravan we will invest the money and use it for our ‘holiday fund’.

That looks like the perfect spot for a long holiday, but I am not sure I could spend all that time in a tent. How will you keep your food cold etc? Or is it a powered site? Mel

This is going to be our first time camping for so long, so we’ll see if we’ll still be as excited about camping after the holidays. There are power points on all the sites, but we also have our own battery system (and solar panels) in case we need them – I’d say we’re better prepared for power outages when we’re camping than when we’re at home! And we’re going to take two camp fridges with us, so there’s no problem keeping everything cold (beer and wine included). Just wait until you see our tent setup in December … you might just be surprised with our diner tent and want to join us for the three weeks 😉!

Yellow Sands looks idyllic Corna and it’s great that your Mum will be joining you there over Christmas and the New Year.

It’s Yellow Sands’ tranquility that keeps us going back there every time. We can’t wait to show my mum this beautiful place too – she’s already very excited and we hope she’s going to enjoy it as much as we do.

This would be my idea of a great Christmas holiday! Although I like snow I don’t think it is necessary for the enjoyment of Christmas. I would love just sitting there watching the birds and listening to the waves pounding on that gorgeous beach. And I can only imagine the feast you guys will prepare! I assume you will be launching the kayaks?

I don’t think camping over the Christmas holidays are for everyone – and especially not for that long. And I hope after these 3 weeks we’re still going to love camping just as much as we do now. For us, December holidays (and Christmas) are synonymous with warm sunny days … but I wouldn’t mind experiencing a “White Christmas” one day as well. You know, between Berto and my mum, I’m sure we’re not going to go hungry – that’s for sure 😉! Oh yes, we’re going to put our kayaks here in the water for the first time – that calls for a celebration on its own.

This is like a dress rehearsal for a holiday! It really does look like a beautiful spot, and that sunrise over the Indian Ocean is a very special sight 🙂

“A dress rehearsal for a holiday” … I wish I had thought of that sentence when I was looking for a header for my post! But you’re absolutely right Sarah, that’s exactly what it was – kind of like “we still need this and we’re going to pitch the tents like that”, etc. The sunrises here are beautiful … and by December when we are going to be there, we will have to be up before 5:00 in the morning to see the sun rise over the Indian Ocean 😉.

You have mastered the art of camping, from picking the perfect location, to setting up your camp and including delicious food as well; well done, Corna and Berto! The tree stump is very intriguing; I’d be taking photos of it too. What a wonderful way to spend the holidays!

Thank you so much Tricia. I think because we grew up camping, it comes like second nature to us. However, this is now going to be the first time that we will camp for so long – so, we’re going to properly test our love for camping this holiday! It’s going to be lovely to have my mum with us – she’s always so eager to do all these things with us (and it’s great, especially since she’s not so young anymore). I think that tree stump is going to feature a few more times on our blog during the holidays, since it’s always so beautiful to see it on our hiking route to the beach.

Well that is luxury camping at its best! I think it’s funny that you have a test run of your campsite 😊 Maggie

Yellow Sands is so close to our house that it’s easy to go there every weekend (and it’s such a great camping ground that we actually want to go every weekend), so, the test run was a good excuse! If I have to be honest, we like the idea of wild camping more, but for my mum’s sake, we’re going to have to do it a little more civilized/luxurious.

You know what, Corna, we’re not campers and at our age we’re not tempted, but what I love about your camping posts is the love for camping that you convey. It pours out of every sentence and even though it’s not our thing, I’m loving it with you! (Plus, I’ve just eaten for tonight’s meal, pork souvlaki and tzatziki, made me smile even more). Love your dress rehearsal, as Sarah put it…

Ah, thank you so much Phil – that’s such a nice thing to say. I’m glad you can see in our posts how much we love camping. When we pitch that tent, put our camping chairs around the campfire, it’s like there’s not a problem in this world. And while we can still camp — even though we pitch our tent slower these days than we did 20 years ago — we’ll camp! Yes, Sarah was very clever with her choice of words … I hope when the real “show” comes, everything will go just as smoothly.

I don’t think Yellow Sands could have been located in a better location – nestled between a beautiful river and the mighty Indian Ocean. As you rightly said, a lovely spot.

I don’t think there is really a shortage of campsites in South Africa … camping is the one thing most South Africans have in common. Yellow Sands truly has everything one would want from a campsite – of which the view is the best!

Imagine – for three weeks! Needless to say, we can’t wait … even my mom is packed already (and it’s still a few weeks before our holiday). I’m sure we’re going to have a blast — even if it’s raining (and I’m saying this to convince myself 😉).

I think Yellow Sands is the perfect place for when one wants to camp for an extended time (because a weekend is definitely too short 😉). And it’s always nice to eat well – I’m looking forward to our Christmas meal and whether we’ll be able to prepare it on our campfire …

You know what I think would be interesting? Taking you on a 3 week camping experience with us 😄 … I think that would be so much fun! But first, let us be the guinea pigs 😂. You’re right, I’m really looking forward to taking my mum on our camping holiday – I think she’ll really appreciate her home after this holiday!

It’s truly wonderful that you have Yellow Sands as your go to camping site whenever you feel the need to reconnect with nature, which you so vividly depicted in your article. I love your Christmas setup with three tents with one being a diner tent – sounds blissful. Your dishes look gorgeous and very eclectic as always. I adore lamb tagine and Moroccan cuisine in general, it’s been far too long since I’ve eaten Moroccan food.

Yes, we are delighted that Yellow Sands is just around the corner from your home. Maybe a good thing too, because we will have to drive twice to get all our camping stuff there for our 3 week long holiday! Hopefully we will be able to prepare delicious meals in our diner tent … for when it rains too much to cook food on the fire. I realise this might be a challenge … and we’ll definitely give feedback!

I’m looking forward to having my mum with us on our camping holiday – she’s never been camping for so long either, so it will be interesting to see how we all are going to feel about camping after three weeks at Yellow Sands 😅!
