The Gate Trail
In last week’s post we told you about our lovely stay at Trennerys Hotel (read here). While we were there we heard about Trevor’s Trails and booked two spots for the Saturday morning.
Trevor’s Trails offers several guided tours: The Gate Trail, a visit to a traditional Xhosa house, 4×4 trail to Gxara Falls and a sundowner cruise along the Qolora River. Quite a few members of the German tour group wanted to do The Gate Trail and Berto and I (and a few more South Africans) joined them on the 3-hour trail.
Trevor and one of his guides, Carlos picked us up from the hotel in a jeep and dropped us off about 1km from the bank of the river. Carlos then led us through one of the villages and green fields to the boat waiting for us at the Qolora River.

Who needs to stop in the middle of the field?
The boat was not big enough for everybody and we split into two groups. The German tour group got on the boat first while the rest of us stood on the shore getting to know each other better. We had a good laugh with two women in our group – they wore makeup and were beautifully dressed with lovely handbags. The one woman said her husband booked them for a boat cruise, but mentioned nothing about a hike through bushes and over rocks (imagine that conversation between them later on)!

After Carlos dropped the Germans off at rocks overlooking a deep pool, he turned around and came to get us. He took the boat through a spectacular gorge – it was amazing to be surrounded by these huge rocks while looking at the lovely reflections in the water.

Stunning rock formations
When we arrived at the deep pool, there were a few people swimming in the cold water. After heavy rain, there is usually a big waterfall too. But today there were only small waterfalls that brought a blissful tranquility to us as we sat on the rocks and looked out over the river.

Two helpers who accompanied Carlos were even brave enough to jump from a high rock into the pool. One of the South African men in our group also did it under loud applause from everyone.

After we stayed there for a while and explored the area, Carlos took us by boat back through the gorge to the bank of the river.

Beautiful nature at the Qolora River
Back on dry land, the two ladies who were dressed so beautifully walked back to the waiting jeep while the rest of us hiked with Carlos for about 5km through the most beautiful landscape to the beach.

The night before we saw a lovely (shy) dog on the hotel grounds. She probably belongs to someone in one of the villages. We noticed her again on our hike where she watched us from a distance. The next morning, we saw her again at the hotel before we left … we almost took her home with us!

The Wild Coast (and old Transkei) are very famous for their cattle that sometimes walk on the beach. We didn’t see them on the beach, but we did on our hiking route. They were in no way disturbed by us and we got the opportunity to take pictures of them up close.

We were now almost at the river mouth. There was a steep descent to the beach after which we could take off our shoes and walk back to the hotel on the soft sand.

Under the guidance of Trevor and Carlos from Trevor’s Trails, we did one of the most beautiful hikes on the Wild Coast of South Africa. We ended the hike by enjoying something cold to drink with Japie and Waldie at the hotel – not only did we do an awesome hiking trail, but we also made new friends. We love hiking!

The end of a beautiful hike
You’ve got to do these sort of walks and get off the beaten track a bit to really enjoy the beauty of your land. Those gorges were truly gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. Mel

That’s true Mel. We would never have known about this trail if it weren’t for Trevor’s Trails … definitely off the beaten track. And it was great to walk with a guide who grew up in this area and was able to share so much of his knowledge with us. Oh, by the way – you and Jo made the same ‘gorge/gorgeous’ comment 😀.

What an interesting combination! That gorge is gorgeous, Corna.

An interesting combination indeed. It was impossible to say afterwards what we enjoyed the most – the river cruise or the hike! And as I just mentioned to Mel – you two think the same! Gorge/gorgeous … 😀

A good job those ladies turned back, that looks like quite a hike to the beach. I may have asked you this before, but have you hiked the Otter trail, if it’s still a thing?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Yes, the two beautifully dressed ladies certainly wouldn’t have enjoyed the hike through tall grass and up and down the hills. The Otter is still one of the most popular hikes in SA and is usually fully booked a year in advance. We haven’t walked it yet because we never know where we’re going to be in a year. But maybe we just need to make a commitment otherwise we’re going to be too old to walk it in a few years 😉!

Better get on and book it then. Any news on whether you are going to be moving?

Nothing yet … and Berto’s contract ends in 12 days. We live on the edge 🙂.

I love your photos from the boat ride along the Qolora River especially as you approached the gorge and beyond where a tempting high jump awaits the brave of heart. Given how big the horns are, I would most likely make a big loop around the kettle hoard – just in case! Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Going through the gorge on the boat was pretty amazing. It was really fun for me to watch the adventurous youngsters diving off the high rocks (rather them than me). You’re right, those horns are quite intimidating … I kept my eye on them as we walked past them! Thank you Aiva, have a lovely week.

This looks like a great outing – I especially love the gorge with its reflections and rock formations! But their husbands really should have advised their wives to dress for a walk 😆

The gorge was stunning – it was amazing with those high rocks on both sides (one feels incredibly small). Do you know what I wished: That I could be a fly on the wall when the two women were back with their husbands after their adventure … I think the men had a good laugh at the joke they made (until the women got to them)!

Those two ladies missed such a wonderful experience. I hope the husbands were contrite! Except for the cattle (I’m not sure if I would still be frightened of them) this trip reminds me a lot of a boat trip that took us through jungle in Borneo and later on at one of the Indonesian islands we when by boat to an inlet that continued into a cave. The inlet continued into a small gorge but the only access was through a submerged tunnel so we had to swim through. It wasn’t far but if I had had time to think about it maybe I would not have gone. I was so glad I did. That small water-filled gorge was wonderful with those same cliffs in your pictures and above there was jungle. Vegetation flowed over the edges and parrots flew overhead. One of the most magical moments of my life. Afterwards, the boat took us back to the ship. No hikes along the beach, so there was no effort involved. But that looks like a very nice hike and I would have enjoyed testing my fear of cattle! Thank you for the wonderful pictures!

Yes, it’s a shame the two ladies couldn’t continue their hike to the beach (but I guess they’re also glad they didn’t, because with those beautiful outfits and nice shoes, it would have been very difficult). It’s interesting to read your Indonesian Island experience – it’s amazing how much it sounds like our Wild Coast hike! At least it seemed that the cattle were used to people, but I still watched them closely as we walked past them. I’m glad you enjoyed the photos.

The boat ride through the gorge is beautiful. So funny about the lady who thought she was going on a cruise-style boat ride 😊 Maggie

We couldn’t decide which was the most beautiful – the boat ride through the gorge or the hike to the beach. It was a great combination of amazing scenery! Haha, the ladies admitted they had set themselves up for a luxury cruise down the river … but also had a good laugh at themselves when they saw the group in hiking attire. I would say they definitely won the prize for “Best Dressed” guests 😊!

Yes, we’re also glad we decided to book spots for the adventure – it’s definitely something anyone should do when visiting Trennerys Hotel. And I’m glad you came along 🥰.

What a lovely hike and boat trip. And the dog watching you, checking up on your movements – he/she clearly liked the look of you and Berto 🙂 Those women in their makeup reminds me of a time my husband said he’d booked us a nice anniversary dinner but made no mention of the fact it was on a beach and that we had to SWIM 150m to get there…… needless to say my long dress was the worst possible choice.

This was a great combination of activities to fully experience the beautiful nature! It was actually quite funny to see the dog popping up everywhere – she definitely got a liking in Berto, because she only had eyes for him! Oh my word Hannah, I had a good chuckle about your anniversary dinner now … it’s definitely one you’ll never forget 😆!

Absoluut! Dit was ‘n goeie geleentheid om beide die rivier met sy unieke rotsformasies en staptog deur die groen veld op een slag te ervaar.

You find the most beautiful hikes and locations, Corna. Those rock formations are amazing, like something from the Lord of the Rings. Too bad the well-dressed ladies had to miss out on what looks like was a beautiful adventure.

We were pleasantly surprised with this hiking trail/boat cruise. I never watched Lord of the Rings (but did see snippets of it) and agree with you, it might as well have been a scene from this movie! The well-dressed ladies definitely missed out on an incredible hiking trail … but I don’t think they would have enjoyed it in their fancy clothes and shoes 😉.

Looks like a fun excursion. The views of the gorge and small waterfalls are beautiful. And the hike afterwards looks lovely. Those poor ladies! They missed out!

It was one of those days in nature that you wish would never stop! Shame, the lovely ladies really missed out. But I don’t think they would have enjoyed the hiking trail (not in their lovely outfits anyway). Hopefully, they’ll go back better prepared to finish the hike.

Lovely, and how hilarious about the two ladies who weren’t dressed for a hike off the beaten track. I wouldn’t have dared jump off those rocks !

It was one of the most beautiful days in nature that we have ever experienced here on the Wild Coast. The two young men who jumped off the high rocks definitely do this quite often on these hikes, because they loved our reactions! Oh yes, the lovely ladies certainly didn’t know what the hike really entailed (I think they blamed their husbands for that 😉).

What a gorgeous boat ride! The cattle have a better view than most people do! Wild dates yum, did you try them?
LikeLiked by 1 person
That’s exactly what we said to each other Diane! I wouldn’t mind having a view like the cattle every day … but then again, I don’t want to eat only grass every day 🤣. The boat ride was truly special – I didn’t realise how beautiful it was on the river until we actually got to the boat – such a hidden gem! We love dates, but haven’t tried the wild ones. The guide did mention that the monkeys love to eat them.

It was the perfect day out in nature! Yes, I think the two ladies would have liked to do the hike, but they certainly weren’t dressed for the occasion (we did see them at the hotel later with a glass of wine, so their day didn’t turn out too badly though 😉).

So glad you didn’t just stop in the middle of the field Corna 😉 you would have been denied so much of this wonderful hike and boat ride. What a fabulous boat tour by the way, the gorge looks spectacular. The “brave” jumpers indeed, something I may have done in my 20s but not so much anymore. Berto wasn’t tempted? The landscapes and river mouth views are wonderful but it’s the little details that truly bring the experience to life from the dog, flowers and dates to those stunning horns. The beach seems like a fitting end to a fantastic day.

Ha, I don’t think many people (or animals) pay much attention to that stop sign in the middle of the field! It was a beautiful area to explore (by boat and on foot). No, Berto probably would have jumped off the high rocks in his teens, but these days he’d much rather chat with other people and take photos 😉. Thanks for your lovely comments Leighton (as always), I love how you always notice the details in our posts.
