Lepelsteeltjies
Lepelsteeltjies is an Afrikaans word for spoon handle. The name comes from the fact that you use the handle of a wooden spoon to make the hole in which the apricot jam sits. The cookies/biscuits are made from cheddar cheese, with a little apricot jam in the centre.
But โspoon handle biscuitsโ donโt sound quite right. You could probably call these โcheesy jam-hole biscuitsโ (I guess), but for this post weโll rather stick with Lepelsteeltjies.
Put it on the table:
Lepelsteeltjies is another much loved South African combination of savoury and sweet and a cookie that we always have in our house. But itโs also a cookie that disappears very quickly!

Ingredients
250ml (105g) cake flour
1.25ml (ยผ teaspoon) salt
1.25ml (ยผ teaspoon) baking powder
310ml (120g) cheddar cheese, finely grated
125ml (120g) butter, at room temperature
apricot jam (smooth)
Preheat the oven to 200ยฐC/392ยฐF. Combine the flour, salt and baking powder in a bowl and mix gently.

Combine flour, salt and baking powder
Add the cheese and butter and mix. (I use a spoon first and then my fingers to make sure everything is well mixed into a manageable dough).

Mix the butter and cheese with the dry ingredients
Spray a baking tray with non-stick spray or grease with butter. Roll the dough into balls and place on the tray.
Here’s a tip: Because the jam tends to overflow (when, in my excitement, I put too much in one cookie), I always place foil in my baking tray to prevent the jam from running directly onto the tray. Less cleaning afterwards โ you know me!

Dough rolled into small balls
Now it’s time to use the wooden spoon. Dip the handle of the wooden spoon into some flour and make a shallow hole in the centre of the cookie. The flour prevents the dough from sticking to the handle of the wooden spoon.

Make holes in the dough balls with a wooden spoon
Spoon apricot jam into each cookie and bake for approximately 15 – 20 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.

Cookies filled with apricot jam
Remember to let the lepelsteeltjies cool a bit before tasting the first one – that apricot jam is very hot! I made a cup of hot chocolate and went out to enjoy a couple of my home baked cookies in the garden. The rest of the lepelsteeltjies I packed in an airtight container (which Berto almost devoured in one go after work)!

Lepelsteeltjies and hot chocolate
Jam filled cookies are best, and these look particularly delicious. Iโm going to try this recipe when we get back to France. Thanks Corna!

Delicious and easy! I’m sure you guys are going to like it. These days, I double the recipe because it doesn’t last long in our house. We were gone for a few days and only came back yesterday. You’re still on your trip Tricia? I’m going to your blog just now to see what beautiful places you’ve visited in the mean time.

Yes, that’s the problem with freshly baked cookies in the house, right? But lepelsteeltjies are just so delicious. I’m trying to convince myself it’s just a small cookie and won’t have an effect on the scale … obviously unsuccessful ๐!

I have to say that these Leptsteeltjie look delicious and very easy to make ( as all you need is a bowl and a wooden spoon) biscuits/cookies, especially for those like me who are always looking for a savoury and sweet cookie combination. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day ๐ Aiva xx

So easy and really delicious! And it’s amazing how little one needs to make this tasty cookie. Aiva, if you like savoury and sweet, this cookie has your name on it!

Those look heavenly. I’ve never had cheese biscuits with jam but why not? My mum made the best cheese straws and always sent me home with a tin full for my friend Tim. I love apricots although the summer we were briefly reunited as a family in London, there was a glut of apricots so they were cheap and my dad was between jobs so apricots turned up at every meal and in jam form. But they are one of my favourites. I like your coffee mug (hot chocolate mug?)

Oh, we love cheese straws! We buy it every now and then (I’ve never tried to make it myself). My mum makes the most delicious apricot jam โ it’s something I grew up with and I always had one jar of home cooked apricot jam in my bag when I returned to my hostel after the school holidays. Thanks, that cup was a gift from a friend and it’s my favourite coffee/tea/hot chocolate cup when I want to relax outside in the garden (and big enough that I don’t want another cup for the rest of the day)!

Those apricot cookies look delicious Corna. Using tinfoil is a good idea as jam burns on to baking trays really badly and needs a good scrub to remove it.

I have to pace myself when I eat lepelsteeltjies, because I’ll easily eat a whole bunch at once! Oh yes, I’ve had to clean baking trays a couple of times where a sauce has overflowed. So now my baking tray always has foil in … just in case ๐!

I have to hide these cookies from Berto (and myself) or we’ll eat them all at once! It would be great if we could eat just one and then walk away (but no – we keep coming back for another one and another …) ๐

Laat jy my nou al weer watertand!

‘n Lekker koekie nietemin!

Lovely, these look delicious. Love the combination of cheddar and apricot jam. There’s no better place to enjoy them than the comfort and privacy of your own garden. Our current accommodation sadly lacks an oven, but as soon as we get one we’ll give these a try. Thanks for sharing, Corna.

It’s really a delicious cookie and small enough to pop whole in your mouth (if you’re Berto) ๐! I hope you guys get the opportunity to bake these soon – I’m sure you’re going to love lepelsteeltjies.

Dit lyk baie lekker, ek ken. ie die naam nie.

Ek is eintlik nogal verbaas dat die naam lepelsteeltjie nie algemeen bekend is nie. Ek ken dit van kleins af op hierdie naam (by my ouma gehoor). Maar soos ek vir Tannie Frannie gesรช het, dis dalk ‘n streek naam vir die koekie en meer algemeen bekend in die Wes- en Noord Kaap. Maar dat dit lekker is, dis verseker!

It’s so quick and easy that you can do it while your baby is taking a nap. And you might still have enough time to eat one too before she wakes up ๐!

These remind me of what we call thumbprint cookies because we use our thumb to make the hole instead of the spoon handle. Your cookies look super good Corna!

Well, I suppose one’s thumb might work just as well … maybe I should do that next time I bake lepelsteeltjies again! It’s such a great cookie and we always have a container full of them.

Afrikaans is mos nie ‘n taal wat mens sommer op enige plek raakloop nie. Ek is dus bly dit het jou dag opgekikker! En ek hoop jy gaan daardie ‘lepelsteeltjies’ maak waaroor ons geskryf het in ons ‘Dish of the Week #22’ ๐.
