Get to know East London better (9)
I’m not sure how our friends in the Northern Hemisphere feel about their winter, but for me, the summer this year is extra long (and hot) here in the Southern Hemisphere.
To cool off after a hot day, we drove to our favourite beach in Gonubie. The best thing about this beach is that there is never a crowd – even when it’s hot!

The ocean at Gonubie Beach
We stopped in the parking area and walked on the lovely boardwalk in the direction of the beach.

We strolled along the beach and then decided to also walk on the banks of the Gonubie (Gqunube) River as far as we could. It was lovely to walk with our feet in the cool water while enjoying the beautiful nature.

Because it was low tide, we could walk a fair distance up the river. There were small groups of people who, like us, also came to seek out the coolness of the water. Some just relaxed near the water while others stood knee deep in the river trying to catch fish with their nets.

Walking upstream along the river
A small boat in the bend of the river made us realise that we could not walk further along the river.

We followed the bend of the river and walked in the direction of beautiful houses that are on the banks of the river. It can’t be too bad to live here.

This is where we saw the fisherman with his net. We watched him for quite some time and it was interesting to see how he cast his net perfectly over the water each time.

It was such a beautiful walk along the Gonubie River. The perfect way to end a hot day. But, as you know by now, Berto and I don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a good meal after a walk!
Brazas Portuguese Fusion Restaurant:
Earlier this week we read about a Portuguese restaurant that opened near us – in fact, it already opened in 2022. After enjoying the Portuguese food so much on our Camino in Portugal in 2018, we were eager to experience the taste of Portugal again.

And great was our surprise to see that all our favourite Portuguese dishes were on the menu! But first I kicked off with a cocktail while Berto ordered a more modest glass of whiskey.

The restaurant is not big and I’m glad we booked a table. Our table was next to a large window which gave us a glimpse of how the food is being prepared in the kitchen.

We received fresh bread rolls with real butter before we ordered our starters. There were so many wonderful options, but in the end Berto ordered a flaming chorizo and I was very satisfied with my chicken giblets.

Starters
Although our South African wines are of top quality, one cannot help but order a bottle of Portuguese wine when dining in a Portuguese restaurant. When we took our first sip, we looked at each other and said laughing: “Bom Caminho” – the traditional greeting between pilgrims on the Portuguese Camino.

Silk & Spice – a Portuguese Red Blend
With our main course, the chef came to our table to take our order himself. Berto ordered the peri-peri chicken and asked the chef to make the sauce extra hot, while my choice fell on the chicken and chorizo espetada. And I can confirm: It was absolutely lip-smacking!

We rarely order both a starter and dessert when we eat out, but we just couldn’t resist the sweet treats. Berto ordered salted caramel cheesecake and since pastéis de nata was not on the menu, I ordered chocolate mousse. Both puddings were delicious!

What a wonderful evening with superb food! If we had closed our eyes, we might as well have been in the middle of Portugal. I suspect that Brazas will probably see us again soon – there’s a lot more on the menu that we still want to try!
What a wonderful restaurant. Moela (the chicken giblets). I remember having that dish the first night of my very first Camino in 2012, a day’s walk above Porto. I had no idea what it was, but I loved it. I had gone to dinner with 6 other people and the moela was an appetizer. Not too many of the people at the table ate much of it, but a Swedish fellow and I finished it off.

That’s what I like Carl … isn’t it amazing how certain foods bring only the fondest memories to our minds? I’m so glad our visit to Brazas made you share this lovely story with us. I also had Moela on our Portuguese Camino – the day before we reached Porto, in Sao Joao (and I had to use Google Translate to find out what I was eating)!

Jy slaan die spyker op die kop Dries! Dis seker hoekom die Psalm digter in Psalm 23 van “na waters waar rus is” praat … want dis waar ons ons rustigheid kry 🙂.

Sounds like a lovely cooling walk in hot weather. You ask how winter is in the Northern Hemisphere…well, given that we’re in England unexpectedly….I can tell you it’s grey, grey, greyer and then for a while goes miserably grey. Rain, rain, rain and more rain. And then it turns grey. You get the picture!? Bring me sunshine…..

Oh, I get the picture! Grey is not one of my favourite colours … not in my wardrobe and not outside either. I hope a) warmer weather in the UK is around the corner or b) you guys can travel to warmer places again soon!

Everything looks amazing! Especially love your photos of the scrumptious food at Brazas Portuguese Fusion Restaurant! It reminds me of the tasty food we always had at Sanaa restaurant at Fort Wilderness, Walt Disney World, Florida

Voete in die water help mens beslis om af te koel! Ons is ook baie lief vir Portugese kos! Als het so lekker gelyk!

Ons was lanklaas by ‘n Portuguese restaurant. My man maak darem vir ons ook Portugese hoender en dis net so lekker. 😊

Berto maak ook gereeld Portugese hoender vir ons, maar selfs hy het die aand by Brazas erken dat hy nie die hoender so lekker soos hulle kan maak nie!

My taste buds are going crazy with looking at all that delicious food. And it is well deserved after a long walk. The beach is beautiful. Our winter here in Normandie is cold, windy and rainy; I could use some warmth. Fun post Corna!

It’s indeed a beautiful beach Tricia – and a bonus to walk along both the sea and river at once. Oh yes, the restaurant was a great find … we’re definitely going to revisit them. Normandy may be cold now, but I know how beautiful your summers are – one of these days!

What a brilliant beach, with so few people. I think walking in a river would be a good way to keep cool and work up an appetite. Your Portuguese restaurant was obviously a good find. I see you had Lurpak butter. It was my mother’s favourite!

It’s a lovely beach Carolyn. Sometimes it’s a good thing that the Eastern Cape isn’t that high on tourists’ destination list. Brazas is such an amazing Portuguese restaurant – it was nice to walk out and know we were definitely going to visit them again (then one knows it was a great experience). Oh yes, Lurpak is also a popular butter in our house (especially when we go camping, because it doesn’t get as hard as other butter and spreads easily).

So many beautiful seaside photos, Corna! With the beautiful blue waves and cool ocean breezes, there’s no better place to be on a warm summer’s day for a quick dip in the sea to cool off. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

It’s always nice to take pictures of the sea/river/lake. Although we’ve been there a couple of times these last 2 years, it looks different every time. And if my feet are cool on a hot summer day, then I don’t really feel the heat – so it was the perfect place to go for a walk. Enjoy your week Aiva.

When it’s really hot the only place to be is a beach. Wonderful to find a quiet one. That’s not easy to do here in summer. But we can always find Portuguese food! Yippee!

We were quite surprised to see so few people on the beach. But actually, it makes sense … there are so many beaches here and that’s probably the reason that none of the beaches are ever overcrowded. I’m so glad we discovered Brazas – I think we’re going to visit them quite a bit more. I wouldn’t have minded being somewhere along the coast between Lisbon and Porto now, eating fresh sardines from the fire – yummy!

What a beautiful beach. I’m surprised it’s not busy, even when it’s hot outside. That’s probably why it’s one of your favourites. Your dinner, drinks and desserts look delicious!

We were just as surprised that there were so few people. But with the amount of great beaches in the area, one might expect that. Hmm, dinner at Brazas was delicious — it was actually hard to decide what to eat. Good reason to go back again!

It’s just beautiful, and looks like there aren’t too many people to share it with 🙂

This is definitely the best part of our favourite beach here … the few people (even in the heat of summer). That it’s beautiful, is really just a bonus 😊.

Though the winter was exceptionally mild this year, we are ready for it to be over. I’m really looking forward to some spring blossoms and sunshine. That’s a lovely beach and so quiet too, perfect! Oh, and your dinner was glorious. No wonder you caved in and ordered a couple of puddings as well. When the food brings such good memories it doesn’t get much better.

I’m glad to hear your winter hasn’t been so harsh, but I can think you guys should be really looking forward to spring blossoms (and warmer weather). The beach by the Gonubie River and our dinner at Brazas was one of those near perfect days – I just loved it!
