December 2023
While my brother and his family from the UK are visiting us in sunny South Africa, it is almost mandatory that we drive to the beach every day.
Because the coastal towns on the West Coast are located so close to each other, we visited two of these seaside villages on one day. Paternoster is only a 30-minute drive from Langebaan, while Jacobsbaai is just around the corner from Langebaan with a 20-minute drive.
Paternoster:

Paternoster is one of the oldest fishing villages on the West Coast of South Africa. Paternoster means ‘Our Father’, the first two words of the Lord’s Prayer in Latin and taking its name from the heartfelt prayers of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors.

The beach at Paternoster
While the family lay on the beach (and every now and then went for a quick swim to cool off), Berto and I went for a walk on the white 8km long beach.
It’s a beautiful pristine beach and one we don’t visit too often when we’re in Langebaan. The reason for this is probably because we are spoiled for choices when visiting the West Coast.

Sunbathers on the beach
As we walked, we saw a man approaching with two large animals. Because there are horse rides on the beach, we thought it might be two ponies. Great was our surprise, however, when they approached and two very large dogs calmly walked past us.

Mondvol Koffiewinkel:
After about an hour in the sun we decided it was time for a light lunch and something cool to drink. Mondvol Koffiewinkel (translated to ‘Mouthful Coffee shop’) is perfectly located on the outskirts of Paternoster. The food was top notch, the coffee the best we’ve ever had and the service excellent – what a great way to end our day in Paternoster.

The choices of fresh salads and filled croissants were all delicious and we ended the afternoon with creamy coffee and chocolate cookies.

Jacobsbaai:
Jacobsbaai, situated midway between Vredenburg and Saldanha Bay, is an isolated and traditional Cape West Coast Village. Friends, who are holidaying in Jacobsbaai, invited us over for a ‘braai’ that evening. It was lovely to hang out with everyone and we talked until late at night.

Just before sunset, most of us went for a walk through the streets of the small village.

With a glass of wine in hand, we watched the beautiful sunset from the balcony. What a lovely day we had on the West Coast of South Africa.

Wishing you both a Happy New Year. Those beach shots look very inviting and the cafe too with that delicious avocado salad for lunch. I agree that those dogs looked enormous, it must cost a small fortune to feed them! I prefer ones that are small and furry to cuddle up with on the sofa!

Our best new year wishes also to you and your family Marion. We have such lovely seaside villages here on the West Coast – my brother and his family just can’t get enough of all the beaches and sunshine! Haha, we were also wondering about how much it should cost to feed those two giant dogs (I think they can eat one out of your house)! But you’re right, a smaller and furry puppy might fit better in our house!

You live near some beautiful beaches! I’m not interested in lying in the sun, but a swim followed by lunch in that lovely cafe sounds just perfect to me 🙂 Happy New year to you both!

Yes, the beaches are really beautiful. I actually like walking here in the Winter (and like you, we don’t like to lie in the sun either). A very Happy New Year to you and your family too Sarah.

Yours is the first post I read this year and what a lovely way to start out! Those beaches are fabulous. How I would love to stand there watching the vast ocean and breathing the fresh air. Your family from the UK must love it, especially this time of year. Your brother has the same great smile. Thank you for starting my New Year off right. Best wishes to you all. (Love those dogs!)

I think you and I read each other’s posts at the very same time – as you said, it’s a great start to the New Year! It’s always nice to look out over the ocean like that, with the warm sun on my back and the smell of the ocean around me … that’s my happy place! Oh yes, my brother and his family are enjoying every moment – they are lucky to get the perfect Summer weather here in SA! My brother likes to smile and he thanks you for the lovely compliment. Best wishes for 2024.

That’s the best of the West Coast’s beaches … the fact that it is so uncrowded (even during Summer holidays). I hope you could feel a bit of sunshine in our post John – not long now, then it’s Summer in your part of the world again! Happy New Year to you too.

You have some cracking places nearby, Corna. Gorgeous beaches and that fabulous shade of blue in the sea and sky. But wait a minute….the best coffee EVER!!?! Now that’s a BIG statement! 😊😀

The beaches on the West Coast are truly some of the most beautiful in South Africa. Haha, regarding the coffee … I based my statement on the rest of the family being coffee drinkers (and even I, who almost never drink coffee, really enjoyed mine)!

As jy daardeur gaan, sal jy asb foto neem?

The most beautiful (and uncrowded) beaches are definitely on the West Coast of SA! Thank you Maggie, best wishes for the new year to you too.

The avocado salad looks beautiful; I’m guessing it was delicious too. And the beaches; I don’t think they could be any better. Seeing the photo of you and Yohan was so touching; there’s no doubt you’re siblings! It sounds like you two have had a wonderful time together celebrating the holidays. Lovely post Corna; enjoy your time with your family!

I think it’s the first time I’ve gotten half of an avocado in a salad — it was quite refreshing! You’re right Tricia, the beaches are just the best here on the West Coast of SA! We enjoyed showing my brother and his family all the lovely places and it was an absolute feast to hang out with them — all over again way too soon, of course. But we have wonderful memories of our Summer holiday.

Oh, the West Coast is so beautiful – still pristine and unspoiled.
I can see the resemblance between you and John.
I am not surprised that you enjoyed some lovely food at the Coffee Shop – South Africa seldom disappoints when it comes to feeding people!

And I hope that doesn’t change anytime soon – it’s the qualities you mention here that makes the West Coast such a special place. Ha, yes I don’t think there’s any doubt that Johan and I are siblings, right? And I absolutely agree with you about the coffee shops/restaurants – we rarely walk out of a diner unsatisfied!

It’s beautiful – and so lovely to have your brother there too 🙂 He has done well to escape the rain here, it’s been non stop for about 4 weeks now and my garden is flooded!

It was great to hang out with my brother and his family again after we hadn’t seen them for quite a few years. While we were walking on the beach in Paternoster, he said he had just watched the weather in the UK on his mobile phone and was very happy that he could now walk on a beach in warm weather 🙂. But at least we know that better/warmer days are also ahead for you in the Northern Hemisphere in a few months (and then it’s our turn to freeze our butts off).

This just makes me long for a seaside escape and summer. Beaches, food, sunsets – what more could one want in December? Or any other month for that matter. I wish you both a happy and healthy 2024.

The beaches were a popular hangout for our UK family (I think they were very happy about the sunny weather). Can you believe there are such big dogs – I couldn’t believe my eyes! And you know us, we won’t miss a nice plate of food on an outing. That stone house stood out beautifully among all the white houses (I wouldn’t mind staying there).
