Smoked pork, pineapple & red pepper kebabs
It’s holiday time and then we don’t want to put a lot of effort into preparing food. Yet we still want to eat well. In today’s post we make a fire again and prepare a quick but tasty meal on the fire.
In South Africa a kebab is also called a ‘sosatie’, another traditional South African dish which originated in the Cape Malay area.
Typically, it consists of lamb or mutton cut into cubes and marinated. It is then skewered and cooked over the fire. However, we are going to show you our own version of the kebab today.
Put it on the table:
We are going to use three ingredients that we really like and then drizzle the kebab with a delicious sauce.
Main Ingredients:

Main ingredients for our favourite kebab
Smoked Pork Neck or Smoked Pork Belly
1 red pepper
1 pineapple
salt & pepper to taste


Pork, pineapple and red pepper cut into cubes and skewered
Sauce Ingredients:
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons sweet & sour sauce

Pour all the sauce ingredients together and mix well
We bought an already prepared garlic bread and placed it on the coals.

Because the pork is already halfway cooked, it only needs a short time on the coals. Baste it frequently with the sauce until the pork, pineapple and red pepper begin to brown.


Kebabs on the fire
After about 20 minutes on the fire, the kebabs should be ready and the smell will alert the neighbours that there is something delicious on the menu.

After the kebabs and garlic bread were ready, we served these together with a pot of curried beans. How easy was that?

Dankie Tannie Frannie :). Die lekkerste daarvan om ‘n sosatie self te maak, is dat ‘n mens self die bestanddele kan kies waarvan jy hou en dit dan alles op een stokkie sit! So, dit het dus sy voordele om jou eie sosatie te maak 🙂

It’s such an easy recipe Marion (and really delicious). Oh, may the 6 months not take too long … In the meantime, you can make delicious soups and wonderful comfort food to make the cold winter more bearable.

I’m not much of a pork eater (my dad raised hogs, so we had pork almost daily) but this recipe looks quite yummy! I’m enjoying your recipe posts Corna. I hope you have a lovely holiday!

It’s interesting to read about your dad who raised hogs. So did you grow up on a farm Tricia? Our one friend doesn’t like pork at all and we always replace the pork with chicken for her – it’s just as delicious! I’m glad you’re enjoying our recipe posts … I hope there are quite a few more that we can show you.

Did Berto make up his own sauce? I keep forgetting that it’s summer and barbecue/braai time! I always liked food cooked that way. What will Christmas dinner consist of?

Yes, Berto made his own sauce – he changes it sometimes, but this is the sauce we use most often for kebabs. Haha, for us braai is synonymous with Summer. For the past few days now, we had a braai every evening (not only because it’s Summer, but also because my brother and his family from the UK are visiting us). But Christmas dinner is a different story: leg of lamb, gammon, rice, pumpkin fritters, golden baked potatoes, broccoli with a cheese sauce … I think you get the picture?

It’s great with chicken Morag. We used to make it with chicken for our friend who doesn’t like pork and she really enjoyed it. And I’m sure you will too – try it!

Who doesn’t love a good kabob recipe? I think kabobs are as fun to make as they are to eat.

I think you’re right Diane. There are so many different variants of the kebab that one will surely never get tired of this! We also like to do halloumi cheese and mini tomatoes on a skewer for a quick snack … now I’m hungry!
