We all have these photos … throwback photos!
It’s described as ‘nostalgia-inducing pictures … from a different era of your life”.
Every Thursday we will throw a few photos of ‘way back when’ on our blog. Why on a Thursday? Because it’s just a day away from the weekend … and we love weekends!
You are welcome to join in or just enjoy the photos (#TB Thursday).
Cape Town Peninsula (December 2016)
“A day in and around Cape Town, is always a good day”. Wet and Dusty Roads
Maybe someone else has said it before, but we want to officially declare that you will never tire of sightseeing in Cape Town. On a random Saturday in December 2016 we decided to explore more of the Cape Peninsula and we had an amazing time.
Sea Point & Bantry Bay:
We started our morning very early in Sea Point with a long walk along the sea. It is a very popular area for walkers, joggers and cyclists. Besides having the sea in your sight, you also have a view of the lovely Lion’s Head.

Lion’s Head in front of us in Sea Point
When we reached Bantry Bay, we decided to turn around as there were still quite a few places we wanted to visit. Bantry Bay is an affluent suburb of Cape Town and also known as the most wind-free area of the city.

In Bantry Bay
Bloubergstrand:
Just a short drive from Sea Point and Bantry Bay, lies the coastal suburb of Bloubergstrand. The name Bloubergstrand literally means ‘blue mountain beach’ in Afrikaans and is derived from Blaauwberg, a nearby hill. Beach goers enjoyed the day in the sun. Here we bought ice cream and joined them with another walk on the fine white sand.

On the beach at Bloubergstrand
Bloubergstrand is also a popular place from where one has a wonderful view of the magnificent Table Mountain. We have an archive full of pictures of Table Mountain that we took from this beach. If you want to see this famous mountain in its full glory, the beach at Bloubergstrand is the place to be.

The iconic Table Mountain
Big Bay:
After all this walking we drove to Big Bay to enjoy lunch. Big Bay is one of two beaches in Bloubergstrand. There are many restaurants here and we found one with a view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Lunch (and a bottle of wine) at Big Bay
Victoria and Alfred Waterfront:
After lunch we walked back to the beach (and bought another ice cream). After admiring the view and watching some surfers in the water, it was time to head home. Only … we didn’t, because on the way back home was the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
We’ve written about the V&A Waterfront before on one of our TB Thursday posts (read here) and it’s always a great place to spend time. We decided to do some grocery shopping here and walked around afterwards.

It was several hours later that we realised the sun was setting when we could see the last rays of the day in the clouds outside. We walked to one of our favourite restaurants in the V&A Waterfront, Ferrymans, and shared a pizza to round off a lovely day of exploring the Cape Peninsula.

If you might have been wondering about the ice-cream, here is proof that we enjoyed two ice-creams each in one day!

Happiness is … eating ice-cream on a hot day (twice)
No wonder Cape Town is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world; it’s stunning. Your quote sums it up perfectly. Great post!

Thank you Tricia 🌞. For us, this is one of the most beautiful places in the world – beaches, mountains and vineyards … and all of this can be seen in one day!

As I think I said before, Cape Town was near the top of our original bucket list and it’s still sitting there unticked. Gotta put that right some day.

Don’t take it off your bucket list just yet – I can see that you will have a lot of fun exploring here!

Now I know where that famous view is from. What a wonderful way to spend a day with ice cream at both ends, or somewhere in between and a good bottle of wine (not together though!) Cape Town is sort of the San Francisco of South Africa, I think, in very general terms, of course. San Francisco was a very favourite place for my generation when we were young. “Make love, not war.” The flower people and so on. We were idealists. Not sure what it’s like now but I think Cape Town will keep its charm.

It’s interesting to hear your comments Carolyn … you’re not the first one to compare Cape Town to San Francisco. I think Cape Town still has that charm after all these years. It’s also one of the few cities in South Africa where you can still walk around the city center without feeling unsafe. When we drive from Langebaan to Cape Town, we always drive through Bloubergstrand and then we see Table Mountain for kilometers, the most beautiful view for me!

I’ve always wanted to visit Cape Town and you have painted a wonderful picture of the bay area Corna.

I am sure you will enjoy Cape Town very much Marion. It has everything one would like to explore – beaches, mountains and winelands. City bustle, but also silence and tranquility when you’re looking for it.

I can definitely see what you mean. You might have to prise me away from Cape Town.

It’s a beautiful city Jo. Very cosmopolitan and the beach, mountains and winelands are all within a day’s drive – we just love it there!

Life’s too short to not enjoy ice cream any time you want it! The bays, beaches, and views are stunning. Walking along a beach has to be one of the simplest and most enjoyable pleasures ever. I’ve always wanted to see Table Mountain in person, and maybe someday we will. Thank you for sharing another wonderful TBT post, Corna!

Yeah, I’m so glad you feel the same way about ice cream 🍦! I agree, walking by the sea is my medicine for clearing my head and finding peace. I really hope that one day you will have the opportunity to see Table Mountain with your own eyes – it is truly awesome!

Thanks for bringing back wonderful memories. Cape Town is a fabulous city, though I’m not sure how safe it is nowadays. Bloubergstrand is probably the windiest beach! I’d liken the city with Vancouver, though the beaches and wine are far better in CT

I think it’s still relatively safe in Cape Town, we walked around the city center in December and never felt unsafe. But I also think one should know where you can and cannot go. Oh yes, when the wind blows, Bloubergstrand is not a good place to be … and I’m glad to hear the wine is better in the Cape than in Vancouver 😉.

The Company Gardens are my favourite place in the city. Do you ever go down to False Bay?

We love the Company Gardens (I’ll have to take photos there on our next visit – it almost feels like you’re not in the city, it’s so peaceful there). We drove to Simon’s Town a lot during the winter months because Berto then dived on False Bay’s side. But we didn’t drive to Strand’s side that much … now of course I regret that!

Gooi jy my ook sommer terug!

You’re right, it’s nice to look back on fun times. And who wouldn’t look relaxed in December (with ice creams) – that’s our summer holiday!

Thank you. Cape Town remains one of the most beautiful cities for us! I now wish we had explored more when we stayed there … but it gives us enough reason to always go back and visit new (and old) places.

Berto looks delighted at having to have his photo taken before eating those icecreams 🙂 I love Cape Town, such an incredible city and I really hope to return one day soon!

Oh, Berto is always happy when he can enjoy an ice cream! I’m actually surprised we don’t have an ice cream machine in our kitchen yet 😁. I’m glad you also enjoyed Cape Town on your travels and I’m sure the city will welcome you with open arms if you come back one day.

Looks like a gorgeous day to be outside by the water. It seems only fitting to get some ice cream! I couldn’t help but laugh that you actually had ice cream twice! I love the view of Table Mountain from the beach.

Ja, dit word koud nou, maar nog nie bitter nie. Net pap nat. Ek praktiseer my moeder taal. Ek moet dit nie vergiet nie. (just not sure about all my spelling) 😜
Here’s to fond memories and internet friendship 🌹💞
