The Augrabies Falls, South Africa
We’re sticking with the Orange River as the theme for Throwback Thursday (which we featured in last week’s Throwback Thursday #3 – you can read that post here).
This photo was taken in December 1994 – Berto and I were in our early 20’s visiting Augrabies Falls during a holiday. The Augrabies waterfall (‘place of great thunder’) is in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa and a waterfall in the Orange River with a height of 56m (183 ft).
However, when we visited the falls that day, it was during one of the driest and warmest months – the temperature was around 45°C (113 Fahrenheit)! That’s probably why there is a bit of a haziness in the photo … but it could also be because it was taken 28 years ago.
- This waterfall was as recent as a month ago in flood. When this happens, visitors usually flock there to witness the awe-inspiring sight.

Ek dink dit het seker intussen heelwat verander daar. My vriendin, wie se ouers daar naby bly, het gese die draadheining is intussen vervang met iets stewiger … so, ons sal ook weer daar ‘n draai moet gaan maak!

Ah, thank you Tricia. My brother took this photo with his camera … and we waited for almost a month to see it because it had to be developed at the camera shop 😁. Those were the days!

So was that pre-digital photo that was scanned? I cant remember when we started doing digital. That was sure a hot day.

I have no idea when digital started to make its appearance. This one was definitely long before that time (so yes, I have scanned this photo). I can’t remember much of this day, but I remember we were so hot and just wanted to drink beer and sit in the shade 😄 (where it was also hot)!

Isn’t it incredible how dated things look sometimes when you look at photos from 20+ years ago. Nothing looks how you remember it! And by the way you make me feel old…in December 1994 I was 37, not early 20s!

It’s true … I always notice this when I look at photos from years ago … then I remember that we must have gotten older too! At least you’re not that much older than us (a little more than 10 years) … and you’d never say it if we looked at how good you look (and busy you are)!

Ha! Yes, I can almost feel the heat from that photograph. Waterfalls are wonderful. In that heat I would have been tempted to jump in! Would love to see it in flood.

This part of the country is known for its extremely hot weather – especially in December/January. I remember that we posed for the photo and then rushed back into the (air conditioned) restaurant. I’ve seen videos of the Augrabies waterfall in flood and it’s amazing – almost all those rocks you see in the photo are then covered with water and a spray of river water is falling on people where we are standing in the photo … authorities sometimes even have to close this section when the river is in flood.

Isn’t it amazing how photography has come such a long way since the 90s? I’m so glad we don’t have to get rolls of film developed anymore. What a great capture of you guys. It seems like your love of adventure started early!

My apologies for only replying to your comment now Linda! We are currently camping and Wifi is not great where we are … but I think it’s sometimes good to just ‘disconnect’ 😉. You’re absolutely right – adventure and visiting new places was something we both loved to do (even before we met each other)! And I totally agree – I’m happy too that we’re in a digital era of photography!

Thank you Linda, we had a wonderful Christmas … still trying to recover from all the delicious food! And now it’s packing again before we leave tomorrow – oh, the busy life of someone on holiday 😉. Hope your Christmas was good as well.

Corna, you look SO different! I would never have recognised you, whereas Berto is Berto, just younger ha ha. Love this shot and that it had to be scanned, what a wonderful memory. I have some scanned shots in my library too. In 1994 I was 16 years old and about to enter college.

Oh yes, I have to agree with you! It’s amazing how feelings/emotions can be brought back by just looking at a photo, isn’t it? When I’m looking at this photo, I just remember the intense heat 😄.

“Off grid” is one of our favourite ways of camping! However, we are camping next to an old hotel … but Wifi reception is poor and we have constant power outages (which doesn’t really matter, because we’re sitting next to the fire most of the time). So, let’s call it my ‘blog holiday’ 😉.
