BEACH WALK – Gonubie

“Summer. When the days get longer, the stars shine brighter, your hair gets lighter, the water gets warmer, the music gets louder and life gets better.” Unknown

While the Northern Hemisphere is decked out in autumn colours, the Southern part of the world are heading towards summer. I still can’t decide whether it’s my favourite season (there’s just something special about autumn), but I’m certainly very happy about the warmer weather!

But oh my, I was not prepared to experience mid 30°C temperatures already in October! It seems that summer starts (very) early here on the south east coast of South Africa!

So, when Berto arrived home from work yesterday, we got into our shorts, t-shirts and flip flops and headed straight for the beach!

The boardwalk at Gonubie beach

Some of you will remember that we stayed in Gonubie for a couple of weeks when we arrived in East London back in May this year. We are now living closer to the city, but it’s still just a 10-minute drive to Gonubie (and the beach).

It was much cooler at the beach, but despite this, we dipped our feet in the cold water (which was quite refreshing). There were also other people enjoying the late afternoon (even swimming) after a scorcher of a day.

A walk on the beach

Although it was only a brief walk on the beach, it cooled us down and we were ready to go back home to make our own pizzas and enjoy an ice-cold glass of white wine.

On the way to the tidal pool to rinse our sandy feet

On the way back home, we got a lovely surprise when the sun showed its most beautiful colours as it went down in the west. A few clouds also appeared in the sky, which was promising for rain later.

When we arrived home, we were just in time to witness the last few minutes of the sun setting. It was such a beautiful end to a very hot day!

  1. So lovely to see South Africa, but I must say that I do not miss the heat 🤣🔥⛱️🌞 You must enjoy Gonubie Beach as much as possible. It is a lovely place and a nice place to cool off. I hope all is going well with work and your life there. It is getting colder by the day here and we have bought extra winter woolies to stave away the colder days 😊😍

    1. I love summer … but summer here in East London might just be a bit different than what we’re used to! I suspect that Gonubie beach may become our favourite spot this summer 😉. We are doing good, thanks Morag – sometimes it feels we’re in a different country (can’t believe that two provinces can differ so much). Oh yes, get those scarves and gloves (and jackets and beanies) out for that cold winter – I hope there is a fireplace!

  2. That’s great, being able to escape to the beach. For quite a few years I lived in Long Beach, NY and the temperature there was always much cooler, even in the hottest weather. I loved being right by the sea although a few years ago they were hit by a really bad hurricane. As you see the sun disappear on your western horizon it starts it’s journey to rise in our our east. Thinking that makes the world seem smaller!

    1. We love being so close to the sea – luckily we don’t have hurricanes here (I also don’t think I would feel the same way about summer if we lived in the warmer parts of South Africa without a sea/ lake/river) ☺️. What a wonderful thought about the sun setting here only to rise on your side of the world…it’s truly amazing!

  3. I remember you sharing winter photos of that beach and saying you expected to enjoy it even more in the summer! And now those days are here and it looks the perfect place to cool off after a hot day 🙂

  5. Gorgeous sunset photos! It’s a lovely place to have just a short drive away from home. Homemade pizzas and wine sound like a perfect end to the day. We’ve just spent a month living a short distance away from a beach and a long seaside promenade, and it is just the best thing ever. Sadly, our stay here is coming to an end as does the nice beach weather.

    1. Thank you Leighton – don’t you just love a gorgeous sunset! Yes, it’s really great staying so close to the beach … going there is not a mission and that’s what I like about it! I’m sure you enjoyed your time as well so close to beach (and a promenade – that’s always a bonus) – hope where you’re going next, is also a wonderful spot! Ah, the pizza and wine was great 🍕🍷 … possibly the best end to any day!

    1. My dear Lisa, we are doing well! Can’t believe we’ve been here for 5 months (feels like just the other day that we arrived in a place we barely knew)! Have you had snow already? Oh my, I’m so excited that we’re heading into summer (not that we’ve had a very cold winter, but I just like sunshine more 🌞). I’ll have to make myself a nice cup of rooibos tea and dive into your blog…I’m so far behind…rain is forecast for the whole day tomorrow, this might be the perfect opportunity to see what you’ve been up to lately! Wishing you a wonderful weekend too 🌸.

    1. You’re absolutely right Marion! A walk on the beach (and cooling off after a hot day), is indeed the perfect way to go into the weekend! Sunsets are my favourite time of the day and I’m always excited to witness one as beautiful as this one!

      1. Don’t worry! We’re on a narrowboat holiday and I’ve been posting daily updates. I’ll be documenting it on here in a few weeks too. If you do fancy taking a peek you can register an Instagram account without putting anything on it and it will enable you to view other peoples. I’m @love…travelling_blog M xx

  6. Dipping in to the sea isn’t a bad way to end a working day, is it! Summer is clearly coming for you guys, just as the cold starts to bite back home. We don’t intend sticking around in the damp English winter. We’ll swap for your 30+ degrees any time! I reckon you’re going to enjoy your summer in your new (ish) location.

    1. Oh yes, COME ON summer! Maybe I’ll regret saying this … apparently summer on this side of the country is something we’re not really used to (high temperatures, humidity and thunderstorms), but I’m so ready for shorts and sun dresses! I can’t wait to see where you’re going to next …

    1. Baie dankie Elsabe … ek’s mal oor hierdie tyd van die dag, wanneer die son ondergaan en die dag geluide verruil word vir die van die nag! Dit is inderdaad ‘n oulike plekkie waar ons bly – mens vergeet so half jy bly in (‘n verwaarloosde) Oos-Londen 😉. Ons is nie groot voorstanders van “estates” nie, maar hier was dit ‘n geval van waar dit die veiligste (en mooi skoon en netjies) is … ongelukkig.

    1. I’m sure it has changed quite a bit over the years … by just looking at the boardwalk which must be pretty new. On the other hand, the hotel and other buildings on the sea front look a little neglected. But the beach is definitely still a great place to spend a hot afternoon!

    1. Thank you Tricia! I must admit, it was a pretty spectacular sunset … probably due to the hot weather conditions we had that day. And it’s always great to end any day with pizza and wine, isn’t it 😉? Hope your weekend is a good one too.

    1. Thank you Diane 🌸. Yes, it’s a great beach to enjoy – we will probably go back there often during the summer time! There are many of these tidal pools at our coastal towns – especially on the south and eastern parts of the country … I suppose it makes swimming much safer for the little ones.

  7. What a lovely beach, Corna 🙂 A few things are as inviting or relaxing as seaside living. Who doesn’t enjoy living in a home within walking or short driving distance of a beautiful beach and glorious ocean view? Having lived near the beach for four years now, I find that there is always something exciting to see and do. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

  8. Thank you for a great share Corna💕🌸 such a wonderful way to cool off on a very hot day. I was longing to do so here in Johannesburg with our very hot temperatures too. I’m longing for some rain here. Enjoy the summer feeling.

    1. Yes, I heard it was very hot in the Gauteng area as well! We really keep our fingers crossed for rain soon. We had continues rain this WHOLE weekend … but ironically, it was warm (something we’re not used to … when it rains on the West Coast, it’s cold ☺️). I’m looking forward to summer … as long as there is a sea or lagoon close by!

    1. Thanks Anita. Yes, the sunsets here in South Africa are beautiful (as they are there by you as well)! I’m so excited we’re going into summer. Good luck with your winter (I’m looking forward to your lovely photos of winter) 😀.
