Bloemfontein (Free State Province) to Vosburg (Northern Cape Province) → 455km (282 miles)
Welcome to our road trip of December 2021. We are travelling by car across South Africa (from the west coast → north coast → KZN south coast → back to the west coast). The distance we will cover, will be around 5,000km (3,106 miles).
Our main purpose for this trip, besides seeing places we have not seen before, is for Berto to scuba dive in Sodwana Bay and then to be a little more adventurous … diving with sharks in the ocean in Umkomaas on the south coast of KwaZulu-Natal. We hope to share lots of pictures to show you our beautiful country.
Accommodation – Day 20:
Elvee “LUSH” Accommodation, Vosburg
After our visit to the War Museum of the Boer Republics (you can read about it here), we left Bloemfontein at around 11:30 to drive to our last overnight stop of this trip … has it been three weeks ago that we embarked on this road trip? Well, now it’s time to head back to our beloved West Coast.
Since we are not travelling too far today, we decided to once again take some of the back roads to avoid the busy highways due to the start of the summer holiday.
But yes … of course, backroads are synonym with … potholes! We were now probably on the worst of all the pothole roads we have endured on this road trip! At the very small town of Luckhoff where we filled our car with petrol again, we asked the petrol attendant about the condition of the road. His answer: “Sir, you will have to try and stay on the side of the road, there it’s much better to drive”.
On our route, we came to the mighty Orange River, the longest river in Southern Africa with a total length of 2,432km. Because I lived as a child in Alexander Bay on the West Coast where this river is flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, I’m always excited to see the Orange River.
When we crossed the bridge, the road improved immediately. Oh, the wonderful feeling of driving on a tarred road without looking out for potholes!
What we did not anticipate, was a gravel road from Kraankuil to Strydenburg. But it was a great road to drive – between farms with green fields as far as the eyes could see.
And then we entered the Northern Cape Province. Somewhere between Britstown and Vosburg we stopped for a brief moment to stretch our legs and just to appreciate our surroundings. After the recent rainfall, the fields are luscious and green.
Elvee “LUSH” Accommodation, Vosburg:
At around 17:00 we arrived in the quaint town of Vosburg. We saw this town for the first time when we filled our car’s petrol tank at the start of our road trip … and just fall in love with this place! It was therefore a no brainer to decide where we would want to sleep on our last night!
We were welcomed like family by Lucius, the owner of Elvee. He showed us around and took us to our room … to say that we were totally blown away, is putting it mildly!
The decorations in the garden is simply amazing. It’s rustic, but yet so beautiful. There is literally something to look at around every little corner.
When we booked our room at Elvee, Lucius phoned us to ask whether he can prepare dinner for us. We gratefully accepted the offer – there is nothing so nice to just sit down for a plate of cooked food after a long day on the road. That is what we call “Karoo hospitality at its best”!
We met other travelers here as well and it was great to eat together while having great conversations. It was with great satisfaction that we went to our room (of course, after using the outside shower – a great way to cool off after a hot day on the road).
The next morning, we enjoyed coffee and rusks outside our room and took one last stroll through the garden, before we packed up to leave.
Whenever the opportunity comes again, we will not hesitate to sleep over here at Elvee again. Oh, did I mention there is a beauty spa on the premises … we will definitely have to come back!
But now, it’s time to drive the last 660km (410 miles) back home. What an amazing road trip we had! We discovered beautiful places in our country that we have not seen before, Berto enjoyed super dives in Sodwana and even more thrilling dives with sharks in Umkomaas. We have met so many wonderful people … what an unforgettable trip!
Thank you to our blogging friends for travelling with us, as well as all your lovely comments on this journey. We will see you guys again somewhere on our next adventures.
What an amazing finale to your wonderful road trip Corna. The accomodation in Vosburg looks idyllic as did your evening meal. It’s so nice to end a trip with an unforgettable experience like this. Looking back, those potholes are terrible and could easily damage the car if you don’t notice them quick enough to slow down, repairs are definitely urgently required !

We made so many new memories on this road trip … and you’re absolutely right, Elvee in Vosburg was like the cherry on the cake! Yes, we were very lucky that we never had any damages on the pothole roads – hopefully the Free State authorities will have a serious look into their roads. And thank you Marion for all your lovely comments on our road trip posts … we hope, one day, we can show you personally all these beautiful places 🌸.

Og, daardie Vrystaatse wolke was ongelooflik mooi (“high five” vir Karel Schoeman) 😉.

I very much enjoyed going on this virtual journey with you. As an American, all I really ever hear about South Africa is Table Mountain. I learned so much about your country from this series of posts. Thanks for bringing all of us along for the ride!

I’m so glad you could see that our country has so many other beautiful places (though, Table Mountain is probably the most iconic landmark of South Africa 😉). Thank you for travelling with us, it is much appreciated.

Ek’s regtig bly ons ou karretjie is ongeskonde deur al die slaggate! Og, Elvee in Vosburg was soos ‘n klein stukkie paradys … ek pak sommer nou ‘n tassie en ry weer daarheen (dis net so effe ver vir ‘n nag so oorbly 😉). Dankie ook dat jy saam gery het – bly ons kon op plekke aanry wat ook bekend is aan jou!

When we were in Seattle, Grant was always saying he missed the open skies of South Africa. Your photographs made me realize exactly how he felt. Your last photo is so beautiful. Thank you for taking us along on your trip. Such virtual journeys have become very important to me!

And that’s exactly what we miss when we travel to other countries … the open skies and vast landscapes of South Africa! I’m glad we could bring a little “insight” into Grant’s world for you! Ah, yes that last photo … that’s what we call home! Thank you for coming along Carolyn 💌.

Oh, that last meal was absolutely the BEST! We were just so tired after driving such a long way, that this home cooked meal was simply what we needed to recharge us for that last 600+ kilometers! Hmm, we love our home town … the lagoon, the beach and the most amazing sunsets! Thanks Maggie, that you came along us on our road trip 🌸.

Your stay at Elvee sounds like an appropriate finale to a vibrant and eventful road trip. Hope the road back was less pothole-infested. You live in a beautiful and wild country, which I’m learning more and more about with each of your posts.

It was THE road trip Leighton! Elvee was definitely the perfect place to celebrate the end of an amazing journey. And no, no potholes further (you only find them in the Free State Province … hopefully the local government will start doing something about their roads very soon). Yes, South Africa is a very diverse country … and yet, there is still so much more to show you guys!

Oh Christie, thank you for coming along … it was great having you “on board”! Yes, Elvee was definitely one of the best overnight stops we had on this trip – isn’t it amazing how you can decorate your garden with ordinary stuff?

That sunset was taken at our hometown – I love walking on the beach and watch the sun set in the ocean! Yes, we had a great time discovering new places (and making new friends). And yet, there are still more places we have not seen … time to plan the next getaway 😉.

The backroads were the scenic way notwithstanding a few potholes. The hotel was a real find. The owner actually cooked diner for you and the decorations in the garden could be artwork. Everything on your trip worked out beautifully.😄😎

Yes John, that’s true … although we encountered so many potholes (well, it was actually just in the one province), the backroads were definitely our most favourite roads to travel on! And that delicious meal at Elvee prepared by the owner – wow, the warmth and kindness of the people in these small towns are just amazing. What a trip – loved every moment of it! Thank you for reading and all your comments – it’s much appreciated.

Ah Tricia, thank you so much for following our South African road trip … one we really enjoyed! It was just amazing to see the different landscapes – every province beautiful in its own way. I, on the other hand, can’t wait for your planned move to France in March (good luck with the final preparations) and keep your camera’s battery fully charged to take show us the beauty once you arrived there!

It was such an interesting garden – I could spent the whole evening there walking around and finding gems around every little corner! Ruth, I just had to take photo’s of those potholes (my husband had to keep an eye on the oncoming traffic) … I couldn’t believe my eyes! Thanks, it’s good to be back home ☺️.

Howick is one of my favourite town, where good friends live and where we spent a lot of time at Midmar while the kids sailed. The Falls are flowing strongly.

What a brilliant location to spend the final night of this fascinating trip, you voortrekkers certainly live a lot better on the road now than the days of sailcloth tents! Thanks so much for letting us all accompany you on this fascinating trip which has been brilliantly written and illustrated and I cannot wait to see how the gin tasting goes next!

We just love these little towns next to the road! Normally people will just get in their cars and drive to their end destination (and in the process miss all the gems on the way)! Yes, you’re right, this last accommodation was indeed far from the sailcloth tents that the Voortrekkers used many years ago 😁. Thank you for reading about our road trip, I would not mind do another long distance one when the opportunity arise, that’s for sure!
