Camping between vineyards, lavender and majestic mountains
The beautiful town of Franschhoek is just 87km/54 miles from Cape Town and a very popular place to visit, especially among overseas visitors. We have been to Franschhoek several times before on day trips but wanted to spend a weekend here to visit not just the town, but also the surrounding area (read: wineries).
Accommodation in the area can be quite expensive, but we found an option on the internet that seemed very appealing – luxury camping on a farm.

Our campsite
At Franschhoek Camping there are only 10 campsites. Except for 2 sites (which share a bathroom), the other sites each have their own bathroom. Most of the campsites have pergolas covered with bougainvillea and the softest green grass a camper could ever wish for. There is also a ‘braai’ at each campsite, as well as an electrical point.

The ‘braai’ and electrical point
Apart from the absolute tranquility, the views are also more than enough to put any camper in a state of pure happiness.

From our campsite, we had a view of the lavender garden and mountains
The paved pathways leading to the bathrooms are surrounded by pleasantly scented lavender. It is remarkable how neat the gardens are, and we enjoyed taking peaceful strolls through the campsite.

I won’t say the bathroom is very spacious, but it’s definitely unique. With modern finishes, you have everything you might need – toilet, washbasin, and shower with hot water.

Because wild animals, such as springbok and zebra, roam freely among the vineyards, the campsite is fenced and has electric gates. A remote and keys are given to campers that can be used to open the gates while camping there.

The campsite has stunning views over the valley and mountains

There is an honesty shop where campers can buy wood, ice, and other camping essentials. It’s great to have such a facility when camping, which mean there is no reason to drive to a shop to buy something you might need.

The presence of an eco pool at Franschhoek Camping makes it easy to cool down on hot days. The water comes from a fresh mountain spring and has a lovely view of the mountains.

I really liked the communal dishwashing area. Besides being a large sink with enough hot water, it had the most beautiful view of the mountains. I didn’t mind washing the dishes after every meal (even Berto offered to help).

I mentioned earlier the presence of wild animals on the farm. Early one morning we went for a stroll in search for them.

Walking through one of the gates to look for wildlife
On the way to the animals, we saw a tram parked outside the farm’s main gate. This is the wine tram of Franschhoek. We have booked an excursion on the tram and will tell you more about our day at different wineries in a next post (read here).

After we walked a short distance, we came to a small group of animals that were grazing and enjoying the warmth of the early morning sun.

We walked a fair distance uphill and were rewarded with the most beautiful views all around.

Among the non-wild animals are free-roaming chickens and two farm dogs, the border collies Gemma and Oreo.

We also had the company of sunbirds every morning, searching for breakfast in the lavender bush next to our trailer.

Before we get to the food that we made during our camping weekend, we first have to show you the beautiful sunsets at Franschhoek Camping. Every evening we sat on our chairs, looking towards the mountains and saw the most beautiful scenes – it was almost like watching a movie.

The mountains behind us were lit up by the setting sun

Clouds and sky in soft colours

Moon behind the clouds
Sunrises were just as beautiful. In the early morning, the mist clouds moved slowly over the mountains until the sun made its way through them.

Everything looks so much brighter early in the morning
And then, finally, we made sure to prepare a few camping meals. Dinners were mostly on the campfire and breakfasts on our gas stove.

One morning we just had coffee/tea and rusks
Between the wildlife roaming freely, the amazing views, and the gentle rhythm of farm life, our camping weekend was pure joy. If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and want to experience a bit of luxury while camping – without it costing you a fortune – then Franschhoek Camping is the place for you.

In our next post we will take you on a stroll through the streets of the beautiful town of Franschhoek. This is one of the oldest towns in South Africa where the presence of the French Huguenots is still tangible. (You can read about our visit to Franschhoek, when you click here).
Looks like a beautiful glamping spot! Maggie

You’re right Maggie, even though we were in our rooftop tent, one can certainly describe it as glamping … thanks to the beautiful surroundings of the campsite.

I think I could manage this deluxe style of camping, Corna. The views are sensational xx

This campsite is worlds apart from our wild camping a few months ago – that’s why I can’t help but call it luxury camping 😉. The views were incredibly beautiful – any time of the day. Loved our time there!

Thank you for your lovely comment, Tricia. It’s actually one of those places that you have to see and experience yourself to realise just how beautiful it really is … but I’m glad you could tell from our photos.

It looks idyllic Corna and those sunsets are stunning.

The sunsets were indeed spectacular – especially with the clouds in the sky. We had a really good time at Franschhoek Camping – it’s one of those places that we will probably visit again.

What a wonderful campsite! Mountains make beautiful scenery but the campsite itself is so lovely with all that lavender and animals/birds/sunrises and sunsets as well. You have had so many great camping weekends. I enjoy them vicariously through your posts and great photos – thank you!

Compared to other campsites, this one must be one of the most beautiful with regarding to views over mountains. And I don’t think I have ever seen so many lavender bushes gathered together – the sweet smell was wonderful. I’m glad you enjoy our camping weekends, and I hope we can show you many more new places in the future.

Not my idea of ‘luxury’, even with the private bathroom, but definitely a beautiful spot! The mountain views and sunsets are really lovely 🙂

Haha 😁, yes, I knew I wouldn’t be able to convince you that this camping weekend was luxurious. But as you yourself say, the views are quite something. I have good news; we are soon going to write about a very luxurious few days to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary – and I bet you will enjoy that!

Ah yes, I’ll look out for that 🙂

You captured so many beautiful photos, especially the ones with colourful sunsets. I have to say that that’s a very scenic and neat campsite, dear Corna. I love how it is surrounded by mountains and offers pure serenity. How amazing that you were able to see zebras roaming around the campsite. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

It’s a bonus if the campsite is so well maintained and also offers breathtaking views. It was also nice to sit next to our campfire and watch the zebras grazing so close to us – that’s what I call ‘getting one with nature’. Thank you very much for your comment, Aiva – I appreciate it as always.

One of my favourite places in the Cape. When I lived there it was too expensive for us to eat out in the town, but in 2008 my husband and I had a few days staying on a winery with the most amazing views of the mountains (I am sure I have the same ones as you) and ate in the most delightful restaurants along the main road. One of the best meals ever was at Haute Cabrière. You might enjoy my post about it.
You definitely picked an amazing camping site!

Camping just outside Franschhoek was a good idea. Because it wasn’t as expensive as staying in a guesthouse, we could use our money to hop on the wine tram to visit various vineyards. I enjoyed your story about beautiful Franschhoek – thank you for the link. I don’t think much has changed over the years in this beautiful town – although, the days when a wine tasting cost R30 are long gone 😁. We also went to Grande Provence and what a beautiful place (expensive too). I will write about this soon – you might recognise some of the places.

Sjoe, dis darem ‘n pragtige omgewing!

What a wonderful campsite spot – and honestly at this point your camping set up is basically a house. You are absolute pros 🙂

You will probably find it interesting to hear that after each camp we think of something else that could make camping better/more comfortable. Even at a luxury campsite like this one at Franschhoek Camping, Berto came up with another ‘camping gadget’ that we need to make camping more enjoyable – I hope to share it soon 😊.

Wat ñ pragtige plek, Corna! Ek hou veral van die badkamer. Sink?

O ja, hulle is baie besig … veral naweke is ver vooruit bespreek.

I don’t think there are many campsites that have such a beautiful view as this one at Franschhoek Camping. And when we think about camping here again, you should know we really enjoyed it!
