Pinotage on a Plate and in a Glass at Beyerskloof
Those of you who have read a few posts on our blog will know that when we mention we enjoy a glass of red wine, it’s always a Pinotage – and specifically Beyerskloof Pinotage.
Considering that Beyerskloof Pinotage is our favourite red wine, it’s actually quite surprising that we have never been to this wine estate. And even more so because it is very close to where we lived for almost 20 years. Now that we’re back in Cape Town after living for 3 years in East London, we have decided that a visit to Beyerskloof can no longer be postponed.
Beyerskloof is just 5km/3 miles outside Stellenbosch on the R304 and has a lovely view over the Simonsberg mountains.

Compared to other wineries in the area, Beyerskloof is actually still very young. It started operating as a winery in 1988 and in 1995 the first Beyerskloof Pinotage was produced and bottled.

Although most people visit a winery to taste wine, we originally came here for something really special. At The Red Leaf Bistro, visitors get the opportunity to eat their signature dish “The Pinotage Burger” – something we have always wanted to try.

The restaurant is not very big and because it’s such a popular place (probably thanks to that tasty hamburger), it is advisable to book in advance. It is easy to make an online reservation, thereby allowing you to see which time slots are available on the day of your visit. Tables can be booked indoors or outdoors. Interestingly, on the day of our visit, more than half of the tables were booked for a baby shower (of all things). We arrived just before the rush and could enjoy our meal without a crowd.

I ordered my favourite hot drink, Rooibos Cappuccino, while Berto enjoyed a cold Rock Shandy.

We originally did not plan to have a starter, but the Bobotie spring rolls on the menu quickly changed our minds. The waitress also brought a complimentary herb and cheese pizza to our table. Isn’t the wonderful aroma of wood-fired pizzas one of the best smells there is?

And then it was time for that Pinotage Burger. It is the caramelised Pinotage onion reduction that gives this burger its unique flavour. The photo does not do the burger justice, but trust me, it was one of the tastiest burgers we have ever eaten.

After a lovely lunch and friendly service, we decided to quickly pop into the wine tasting room – except that it wasn’t quick. Although we know the taste of Pinotage very well, it just felt right to do a wine tasting – after all, we are at a winery, right?
It was on a day like today that I was glad I did not have to drive home. Berto suggested that I make myself comfortable and taste a few wines, while he took photos in the wine tasting room.

Beyerskloof has won several prestigious awards for their wines. Their Pinotage regularly wins Gold and Double Gold awards. And more recently, they walked away with the first prize in the Absa Pinotage Rosé Award category with their Beyerskloof Pinotage Rosé 2025.

I chose the Classic Tasting experience which includes both the Pinotage and Rosé. My conclusion? “Certified, stamped, and approved by yours truly”.

Our visit to Beyerskloof exceeded our expectations in the most delicious way. That legendary Pinotage Burger was every bit as bold as the wines I tasted. Their hospitality, great food and wine made life taste just a little bit better.

Leaving Beyerskloof with happy memories (and a few bottles of wine)
nicely done. Always enjoy your posts of Wine adventures 🍷🍷🍷. This is now on my list of Wineries to visit once I go to South Africa.

There are so many wineries to visit in and around Cape Town that you are going to need a very long holiday 😁. But you definitely won’t go wrong if you decide to visit Beyerskloof!

Thanks Maggie, the Cape Winelands are really beautiful. I think Beyerskloof distributes their wine mostly to Europe – countries like the UK, Netherlands, Germany, and Portugal. Maybe if you visit one of these countries again, you can search for their wine.

What a wonderful day out Corna. I adore visiting wineries, enjoying a lazy lunch followed by some tastings. The burger sounds delicious and the photo of you by the sign carrying your wine purchases is lovely – what a pretty dress.

Thank you so much for the compliment, Marion. I don’t wear a dress often, but it somehow felt appropriate for our visit to Beyerskloof 😊. There are so many wineries near us that we will never get to them all … but we can try!

Wonderful! The setting alone is worth going for. My mother and I had a lovely day out there very many years ago, – before that winery was built. Wine-growing country is always scenic. My friend Tim and I went wine-tasking in Sonoma, California back in the 70’s (!) It was a very jolly afternoon! Before I went “veg” I would have loved the burger. It was a favourite food. I like spring rolls and those look great. The restaurant sounds very nice too. Glad you finally got there!

It’s amazing to read that you and your mother were in this part of our country so many years ago – long before Beyerskloof was even a thought! Things have definitely changed here, and I don’t think you would recognise this area now. Oh yes, wine tasting is a lot of fun – I will soon write about our wine tram experience in Franschhoek – quite enjoyable indeed 😁. I can confirm, if burgers were a favourite years ago, you would definitely have liked this one – it’s a unique flavour and proper hamburger!

We enjoyed the day in the winelands – who wouldn’t when it’s at such a beautiful place? Berto usually drinks red wine, and I prefer white (especially in the summer). And because he knows the taste of Beyerskloof Pinotage, I was the lucky one to do the wine tasting 😉.

It’s great to visit a wine farm, not only for their good wine, but also for delicious food. Now that we’ve tasted that hamburger, there’s a good chance we’ll be visiting Beyerskloof more often 😉.

Visiting a winery that also has a bistro is always a bonus. It’s always fun and interesting to learn about the wines, and then taste them as well. It certainly is a beautiful setting for a winery; wow! Lovely post, Corna!

Thank you Tricia. I think any good winery knows they’ve got a winning recipe when they also have a restaurant/bistro. With views over the vineyards and mountains, Beyerskloof has a prime spot and is probably one of the most popular wineries in the area.

Ooo – I’d like to give that rose a crack! Was it nice and dry? Mel

That rosé was just like you described it, Mel – I don’t like a sweet rosé and Beyerskloof’s Rosé Pinotage is crisp, dry and at the same time there’s a hint of strawberry flavour. Do I sound like a wine expert now 😁. The good news: As far as I know, Beyerskloof also distributes their wine to Australia!

Ooooo – tempting! I will have to keep my eye out for their brand. Thanks for the tip! Cheers Big Ears!

I am sure I have had Beyerskloof Pinotage, but it’s not available from my online wine shop at the moment. I have a feeling the supermarkets often sell it. I love a good Pinotage. Have you visited Spier Wine Farm? I remember that one because of the farm shop where you could pick up items for a picnic in their grounds – also way back in 2000 they had a cheetah on the site. My then very small granddaughter went into the cage to stroke it. Weird the things you remember!

I know that Beyerskloof distributes their wines to quite a few countries in Europe, and on their website, they indicate that their agent in the UK is in Colchester (I assume that’s a reasonable distance from you, but at least it’s closer than Stellenbosch 😉). We visited Spier quite a few times when we still lived in Cape Town – mostly for picnics and one or two concerts – but I can’t remember the cheetah. Maybe it’s a good idea to visit Spier again now that we’re back in the Cape.

That pizza was a good appetizer (and the fact that it was free was a big surprise)! Hmm, visits to wineries are always fun, aren’t they 😉.

I absolutely LOVE this day trip. First and foremost, you look beautiful Corna, and I love your dress. Secondly, the views are idyllic. Thirdly, the food looks so tasty. And Fourthly (is that even a think?) THAT WINE. Oh how I wish I could teleport there and have a glass with you 🙂

Thank you for the compliment, Hannah – a beautiful place like Beyerskloof deserves a lovely dress, right. Everything at Beyerskloof is exactly how I like it at a winery – beautiful views, delicious food, and good wine … that makes me happy! YES, it would be such a blast to enjoy a glass of wine with you (or gin or cocktail or …) 😁.
