Footprints in the Sand & Colours in the Sky
We have finally reached the last post of our wild camping series along the West Coast of South Africa. In today’s post, we just want to share a few photos of our beach strolls. Oh yes, and those lovely sunsets – each one was different, but we were amazed every time at how beautiful they were.
There were a few mornings when we got out of our tent and our campsite was shrouded in mist. With the damp mistiness around us, it was always great to just sit in our camping chairs and see the world waking up.

Early morning mist

The mist is slowly lifting

By mid-morning, the mist had moved back to the horizon
Around lunchtime, the sky was blue, the sea calm and the sun warm. That was usually an indication that we should go for our daily stroll on the beach.

A beautiful day at Waterval on the West Coast
In front of our campsite were rocks, but not far from there were beautiful sandy beaches. Usually, it was just the two of us on the beach, which of course made it so much more enjoyable.

On our way to the beach

Relaxing stroll on the beach

Waves find their way to the beach through the rocks
The birds that you see the most here are, of course, sea gulls. They are often found in large numbers, particularly along rocky shorelines.

Sea gulls on the rocks
Apart from the seagulls, we also regularly saw kelp that had washed up on the beach. This usually happens after a heavy storm or rough sea conditions. This phenomenon is particularly common in coastal areas where kelp forests are located.

Walking through kelp on the beach
Except for the sea gulls and kelp, we also saw many other interesting things on the beach – colourful coral, weird shells, and jelly-like blobs. There is definitely not a dull moment when walking on a beach on the West Coast of South Africa.

Colourful coral and kelp

*A shell … or something
* Thanks to Jude (Cornwall in Colours) for identifying the shell as an empty egg case, called the ‘Mermaid’s Purse’.

This is probably family of a jellyfish

A pretty coral ‘bouquet’
Among the mussel shells on the beach, we also found quite a few beach plants and even small bushes of flowers.

Pretty things on the beach
Sometimes we would sit on the rocks and watch the waves roll onto the beach, and other times we would relax on the beach with our toes in the soft sea sand. Our beach strolls are definitely some of my best memories from our wild camping adventure.

It was never difficult to find a rock to watch the waves

Pristine beaches
I think my favourite time of day was when the sun threw glitters over the ocean during late afternoon. That was always the perfect time to grab a chair and just sit and watch as the spectacle unfolded.

With or without clouds – it was always pretty
The sunsets along the West Coast are a breathtaking blend of serenity and drama. On some evenings, soft clouds would scatter across the horizon, catching the fading light in pastel shades of pink, peach and even lavender.

Clouds in the sky made stunning sunsets

There’s that sparkling ocean once again
While other nights, the sky cleared completely, allowing the sun to dip into the ocean in a blaze of gold and fiery orange.

The sky turns into the same colour as our campfire

Even when the bright colours are gone, it’s still beautiful

When the sun finally set, the mist slowly returned
We have often seen the last sun of the day dipped behind the neatly stacked rocks at our campsite.

The sun behind our campsite’s stacked rocks
As I mentioned earlier in the post, no sunset was the same. Isn’t it wonderful how something that occurs every single day can look so different?

Orange, pink and blue

Is it orange, yellow or gold?
On the morning we packed up, we often paused to watch the sun trying to drive away the mist clouds. The streak of blue sky was a promise of a warm day – I can’t say we were excited to leave this beautiful place.

Last morning at our campsite
We had a wonderful time along the West Coast. Two weeks of absolute tranquility were enough to prepare us for the new year and its challenges. We hope you enjoyed our wild camping adventure with us.

We are going to miss those beautiful sunsets and sitting around the campfire
Ek glo dat hierdie twee weke julle fiks gekry het vir die res van die jaar, Corna. Dankie dat jy hierdie mooiste fotos met ons deel.

Ah…this makes me long for the sight, sound, smell of the ocean! Having a stretch of the shore to yourself is special and watching the light as it changes during the day, especially when the Sun dips beneath the horizon and then the stars come out. that must have been a great holiday. Did you stack the rocks or was that someone else’s cairn? Lovely photographs. I have enjoyed this trip – as I always do!

The fact that it is so peaceful on this part of the South African coastline is what always draws us there – no crowds, no pollution, just the beautiful untouched Nature … I hope it never changes. The cairn was there when we arrived – my friend and I accidentally knocked it over one evening while taking photos, but we stacked all the rocks back together (it was quite a unique feature of the campsite). I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the past few weeks’ posts of our wild camping at Waterval – and that I could bring a bit of Summer, warmth, and blue sky to you while your part of the world is covered in white snow.

I can definitely see the appeal of strolling on that beach and having it all to yourselves! And the sunsets are indeed very special 🙂

There are few beaches in South Africa where you are guaranteed not to run into crowds during the height of Summer! You know, I don’t think you’ll ever get a sunset that isn’t beautiful … but it is truly special here on the West Coast of South Africa 😊.

Lovely sunsets indeed. I’ll never get tired of seeing them. You’re right, each one is so different. I’ll also never get tired of those beautiful views of the ocean either. I’ve always enjoyed walking along the beach and seeing what gets washed up on shore. Love all the colourful bits of coral and other treasures that you found.

I don’t think one needs paintings against your wall (or even a television😉) when living on the West Coast of South Africa – I will never get tired of the views of the ocean (and the bonus of it constantly changing). I was surprised to see such extraordinary things on the beach and I’m glad you enjoyed it too!

Unspoiled and free from crowds – my kind of beaches (and this during the peak of the South African summer)! Oh yes, I loved the coral bouquet – it was the first time I had seen something like that … and I only saw this once during the two weeks we were there, so it may not be such a common sight.

I am so happy you could ‘feel’ through our posts and photos just how much we enjoyed the tranquility of the West Coast. It was two wonderful weeks of isolation and contentment – the perfect way to start the new year! Thank you for joining us on our wild camping adventure.

I can’t think of anything better, dear Corna, especially when it comes to wild camping paired with vibrant, colourful sunsets – it is a deeply tranquil, often “blissful” experience, offering a sense of escape, adventure, and connection to nature. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Oh yes, wild camping definitely goes hand in hand with beautiful sunsets, right? Thank you for your comments on our series of wild camping at Waterval, it’s much appreciated.

What a lovely peaceful place to relax and enjoy nature. No wonder you were reluctant to leave. The shell thingy BTW is is an empty egg case, often called a “mermaid’s purse,” made by a species of shark I believe.

Thanks Jude, you’re 100% right about the “mermaid’s purse” – when I read your comment, I remembered that Berto mentioned it on the day we saw it on the beach (I’ll add it to the post now 😉). We had such a great time at Waterval that we’re considering going there again at the end of the year …

Wow! I couldn’t possibly pick a favorite sunset photo from these. What a lovely place to camp.

I also couldn’t choose a favourite, which is why a whole bunch of sunset photos appeared in this post 😁. Yes, it really is a place where one experiences absolute serenity – enough to call us back to go camping there again!
