(Yes, we’re back from our wild camping adventure at the picturesque West Coast. We had an incredible time at a place called ‘Waterval’ near Groenriviermond where we said goodbye to 2025 and watched the first sunrise of 2026. We will tell you all about it soon).
But first, we want to share two more camping weekends with you that we enjoyed towards the end of 2025 – and ironically, both are next to a river. Here is the first one:
October 2025
Camping next to the Berg River
It’s the beginning of a long summer here in South Africa, which means that camping is officially back on our list of fun things to do. And although we camped during the winter (remember those steaming hot tubs on a cold evening at BietjieDam – read here), it’s just so much more fun to camp when the sun is shining and it’s warm.
We decided to try a new campsite once again. After Berto did a bit of research, he found Kliphoek River Resort, and since it’s not far from Cape Town (just 160km/99 miles), it seemed like the perfect place to kick off our summer camping. Our friends, Frans and Fiela, joined us again on this camping trip, and we had a wonderful time by the river.

The river campsites at Kliphoek are fairly new (December 2024) and the nice thing about these campsites (besides being next to the river) is that each site has its own ablution facility and kitchen area. So, you don’t share a bathroom with any other campers. The bathroom was also cleaned every morning by the cleaning staff of Kliphoek River Resort.

Not far from the campsite is the railway tracks of the well-known Sishen-Saldanha Train (which transports iron ore). It’s an 861km/535 mile long heavy-haul railway line, also known as the Ore Export Line. We saw (and heard) the train a few times during our weekend stay.

It was a beautiful first evening and we enjoyed the last light of the day while we made a fire to prepare dinner.

Lovely evening
The campers next to us had a small boat and they enjoyed a few outings over the weekend. If you have a boat, it’s always nice to launch your boat near your campsite.

Our camping neighbours returning from a sundowner trip on the river
Dinner was sweet potato wrapped in foil under the coals and the popular West Coast fish, ‘Snoek’ made by Frans. I mean, we are camping on the West Coast after all.

The next day we woke up to a damp morning. It had rained a little during the night and our surroundings looked fresh in the early morning light.

Berto made one of our favourite camping breakfasts – Yellow Sands Riverside Brunch. This is a dish we invented on one of our camping weekends at Yellow Sands when we were living on the southeast coast in East London (read more here). It’s so good that we’ve been making it on almost every camping weekend since.

Our favourite breakfast
After the rain of the previous night, we were greeted with a beautiful sunny day. While Frans and Fiela had to drive quickly to their beach house in Langebaan (which, by the way, is only 40km/25 miles from Kliphoek River Resort), Berto and I decided to take a walk along the Berg River.

The river campsites at Kliphoek River Resort are very popular and we had to wait a month for a spot at our preferred campsite. But if you want to experience the tranquility at Kliphoek River Resort and are not able to get a river campsite, we have good news. There are also a few campsites a bit higher up from the river (they may not be directly next to the river, but in my opinion, they are probably more sheltered from the wind and have beautiful views over the Berg River).

Back at our campsite, Frans and Fiela returned from their outing, and we made a fire again to ‘braai’ sausages (‘boerewors’) for hotdog rolls. I’ve said it before, but it still amazes me how something as simple as a hotdog can be so delicious when enjoyed outdoors.

A fire for our ‘boerewors’
We spent a lazy afternoon next to the river. Some of us took a nap, while others read a book. Later in the afternoon, Fiela and I enjoyed a glass of gin and tonic on the jetty at our campsite.

A sundowner drink on the jetty
During the last sunshine of the day, Fiela and I decided to take a walk – it was such a beautiful evening. We stopped at the playground (and had a bit of childish fun) while enjoying the golden colours of the setting sun on the river.

Setting sun colours on the river
Berto made a chicken ‘potjie’ for dinner – a good reason to make yet another fire. This time we used charcoal instead of wood because it works better for regulating the heat when making a ‘potjie’.

The next morning, our last of this camping weekend, we woke up to another lovely day. I love how the early morning sun turns water into a sparkling fantasy.

Our last morning at Kliphoek River Resort
Berto made a hearty breakfast to kick off the day. A delicious meal with bacon, breakfast sausages, fried tomatoes, and scrambled eggs was perfect to celebrate our discovery of yet another wonderful campsite.

Breakfast time

Yoghurt and berries – our breakfast ‘dessert’
It’s a shame to have a camping weekend without any Milo or hot chocolate on the menu. So, I fixed it by making a cup of Milo for Fiela and myself – with a touch of luxury in the form of mini marshmallows. Now, that’s how you camp in style.

It was time to make one last fire before we had to start packing up and drive back home. Lunch was chicken, a colourful salad made by Fiela, and leftover corn from the previous evening.

A healthy lunch
Kliphoek River Resort exceeded our expectations, and we will definitely come back again (hopefully then with our other friends who couldn’t make it this camping weekend).

It’s a bit shivery here still, but Spring is on the way. Have a great Summer, you two xx

That’s a nice prospect … that warmer days are on the way for you. Luckily, our Summer lasts until late April, so I’m not even going to think about Winter now! Thanks Jo – good luck with the shivering bones over there 😊.

Thank you, Marion – wishing you and your family a beautiful and exciting New Year as well. Kliphoek is a beautiful campsite (and when we consider going back there, you should know it is definitely special).

Looking at your lovely photographs is quite a contrast to our current scenery although we are enjoying really “warm” weather at the moment 1 C! The world is still white but heavy rain is likely to wash it away. I like to think of you camping by a river and enjoying all that good outdoor cooking. It sounds like a lot of fun. And by the way…I believe it is appropriate to wish you a happy birthday a few days early?

Oh, I must say your ‘warmer’ weather sounds a bit cold to me! It was 30°C here today and tomorrow a lovely 34°C is predicted – perfect weather for my birthday picnic at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden (yes, there’s nothing wrong with your memory – it is indeed my birthday tomorrow 😉, thank you so much, I appreciate your wishes). Our camp at Kliphoek by the river was really enjoyable – the sunset beautiful, and yes, as always, the food really good!

To be honest, I don’t think it’s that difficult to find stunning campsites in the Western Cape Province. But you’re right Mel, this one was quite magical!

That’s a lovely setting by the river and great to have your own bathroom!

Yes, it may still not be a hotel, but at least the campsite has its own bathroom. Maybe, one day, it will convince you to go camping too 😉.

Almost but I think I’ll stick to glamping for my camping experiences!

I’m not going to lie; I would really enjoy a glamping weekend now after our wild camping adventure 😉.

You guys find the best camping spots! What lovely views, and having your own bathroom is definitely an added bonus. Glad to hear you guys had a good time on your recent trip too. I can’t wait to read about it!

To be honest, I don’t think we’ve ever had bad luck with any campsites. It could mean one of two things: Either our expectations are quite low, or the campsites in South Africa are of high quality … I tend to think it’s the latter. And you’re right, the own bathroom was definitely a bonus. Regarding our latest trip: We got stuck in the sand, sunburned and ate way too much, but it was again one of the best wild camping adventures ever!

Your camp setup at Kliphoek River Resort looks quite impressive, dear Corna. I love camping by the river because it offers relaxation and adventure, with activities like swimming, kayaking, campfire stories, and wildlife watching, creating a great way to connect with nature and family, though you need to be mindful of water safety and insects. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Wishing you a joyful and prosperous New Year! Aiva xx

Yes, camping by a river is definitely very calming. Sunrise and sunset are usually the most beautiful times of the day – especially here at Kliphoek River Resort. Luckily, we didn’t have any problems with insects (mosquitoes can sometimes be quite annoying, but we were fortunately spared on this weekend). We also wish you a prosperous New Year – many travel opportunities and golden moments to cherish as a family.

This was a wonderful start to our summer camping weekends – it’s always nice when the weather cooperates, isn’t it? Thank you, Tricia, I’m still finding my feet after our adventurous wild camping trip and hope to check in on your blog soon (to see what beautiful moments I missed 😊).

I’m glad you could see the calmness in the photos, Hannah, because that’s exactly what we wanted to capture. I don’t think we could have chosen a better place than Kliphoek River Resort to kick off our summer camping weekends! Oh, and you know us … what would a camping weekend be without those delicious outdoor meals 😁.

I love reading about your camping adventures. You do pick amazing spots and all that wonderful food too. You don’t mention swimming here, is it dangerous? I hope you had a lovely birthday. Kirstenbosch was a favourite of mine. And I wish you both a fantastic year ahead.

I’m glad you enjoy reading about our camping weekends, because I have a feeling quite a few of these will appear on our blog this year – life is expensive, but camping is still the cheapest way to see new places. No, it’s not dangerous at all to swim in the river at Kliphoek (on the contrary, there were young campers who did it), but for us it was still a bit too chilly to venture into the water. However, if it had been as hot as it was last Saturday at Kirstenbosch, we would have been in the water all day!! Thank you very much for your wishes, Jude – I hope your year will be an easier one.

Absolutely – I couldn’t agree with you more 😊. When you have a smile on your face for at least a week afterwards, you know it was a good choice for the first summer camping weekend.

I totally agree about how it’s so much easier and fun to camp when the weather is nice and the sun is shining. Beautiful pictures, especially the reflections of the clouds in the water. Love the cacti in bloom too. As always, looks like you ate really well while camping.

We have no excuse not to enjoy many camping weekends, because our summer season is so long. I also loved the reflection of the clouds in the water – it was a beautiful morning in so many ways by the river. Of course, you know us by now, we don’t let the opportunity pass to enjoy good food when we camp 😉.
