March 2025
The title of this post should actually read: ‘Our magical overnight stay’. We have shown you this route several times on our blog before, but the views are always different, and our accommodation halfway was out of this world. So, let’s drive from Langebaan to East London again – the very last time we will do this route from west to east.

Leaving Langebaan at dawn
A few kilometers after we left Langebaan, we drove into thick mist – something that is not uncommon here on the West Coast. Luckily, it was only for 30 minutes and after that we were able to appreciate the rest of the beautiful morning sky.

Rooiberg Winery:
After driving for 200km/124 miles, it was time to find a place where we could enjoy breakfast. Rooiberg Winery is at the start of the Robertson Wine Valley (10 minutes outside Robertson) and we had heard wonderful things about their restaurant Red Chair Bistro & Deli. I had also previously written about their very big red chair – the largest of its kind in Africa.

The biggest red chair in Africa is at Rooiberg Winery

We immediately noticed the beautiful décor in the restaurant with ample seating, both inside and outside. Because of a cool morning breeze, we chose a table inside the restaurant.

Berto ordered coffee and I was very happy to see my favourite morning drink, Rooibos Cappuccino, on the menu.

Whenever there is a Farm Style Breakfast on the menu, you can be assured that this will be Berto’s choice. The Poached Eggs & Mushroom on ciabatta toast looked equally good and I ordered that. Both hit the spot and I can recommend a visit to Rooiberg Winery’s Red Chair & Deli Restaurant – you won’t be disappointed.

Delicious breakfast plates
With about 250km/166 miles to our accommodation, we continued our ride. The scenery along the well-known Route 62 is one of the most beautiful in our country, and we always enjoy driving along here.

Different nature scenes on Route 62
The beautiful Huis River Pass between Ladismith and Calitzdorp is 13.4km/8.3 miles long and offers stunning views. The 39 bends, corners, and curves make it a pass where the driver must concentrate, while the passenger(s) can enjoy the ride.

Ebenharts Restaurant, Calitzdorp:
Upon our arrival in Calitzdorp, we decided to have coffee while Berto attended an online meeting. Ebenharts Restaurant is located in the main street and here they not only make good food but also sell handmade pipes. Their garden is pretty and it’s a good place to stop and stretch your legs if you’re on a long journey.

Klein Karoo Game Lodge:
After Berto finished his online meeting, we drove the last half hour to our accommodation. Let me start by saying that Klein Karoo Game Lodge exceeded all our expectations!

Road leading to Klein Karoo Game Lodge
The natural beauty, wild animals, hospitality of the staff, our chalet, and fine cuisine at Klein Karoo Game Lodge completely overwhelmed us. And let’s not forget about that magical sunset. Even before we could check in at reception, we drove past wild animals.

The owners of Klein Karoo Game Lodge welcomed us like old friends and offered us cold beers (it was quite hot) and we chatted for a while before driving to our chalet to offload our luggage.

At our chalet, we got dressed in swimsuits and returned to reception. Here, Shaun, the manager of Klein Karoo Game Lodge, offered us more cold beers and we were able to cool off in their pool.

Time to cool off
Shaun informed us that they feed the wild animals at 16:00 and that we were welcome to go there. We drove the short distance to the waterhole and for about an hour we had the wonderful opportunity to watch the animals up close.

We saw oryx and a giraffe on the way to the waterhole

An ostrich among the antelope
It was quite funny to see how an eland used its antlers to pull apart the hay bales. After a while it looked as if he had a wig on his head!

On our way back to the reception area, we noticed a herd of springboks. We were happy to see such a big herd of these beautiful antelope in the field as well.

We booked dinner at the lodge and were just in time to see one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. What a wonderful privilege it was to witness this amazing scene unfolding before our eyes.

The restaurant has a wonderful view over the field and we could see the last colours of the setting sun from our table.

Restaurant and our table at Klein Karoo Game Lodge
If you love fine dining, then this restaurant ticks all the boxes. Our appetizers of a Seafood Starter and Ostrich Carpaccio were beautifully presented and very tasty. The chef came to our table to tell us more about the main course. My Ostrich Fillet and Berto’s Beef Sirloin were top-notch. We ended the evening with Cheesecake and Crème Brûlée. What a lavish dining experience!

We slept wonderfully and were refreshed to drive the last 647km/402 miles to East London the next morning.

Diner On R62, Joubertina:
We drove past Joubertina mid-morning and decided to have breakfast at Diner On R62. The omelette was big enough to share between us, and after a cup of coffee and tea, we were ready to continue our journey.

Nanaga Farm Stall:
Our final stop was at an old favourite just outside Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) – the Nanaga Farm Stall. After the filling omelette from earlier, we weren’t really hungry. It was however still 235km/146 miles to East London, and we bought coffee, tea, and snacks for the last part of our road trip.

With the views of the beautiful green hills and many rivers that we had to cross, our long road trip quickly became a thing of the past.

Let no one say that a road trip is not fun – even if it is a road that you have already driven many times before!
That breakfast does look delicious! I love Rooibos tea.

It was lovely to start a long day on the road with such a delicious breakfast! Oh yes, Rooibos tea is my all-time favourite hot drink – it can be enjoyed in so many different ways (and they are all nice)!

Ooh, I love that kitchen too! Just enough (once I found the two burner stovetop! Ha!
And those sunset photos were spectacular!

You absolutely need a stove in your kitchen (even if it is just a two-burner stovetop 😁). The retro look of the kitchen immediately caught my attention – just love it! The sunset was one of the most beautiful we have ever seen – it was a warm evening and perfect to sit outside and enjoy every moment of that. Thank you very much for your comments, Sheila.

Thanks Jo – it was definitely a bit more luxurious than our usual overnight spots on our road trips. Well, that was the last time we drove from west to east … now there is one more post where we will drive from east to west – also for the very last time.

Loved reading this! Even though you’ve done the route before, your journey felt fresh and full of magic. The wildlife moments, stunning views, and that unforgettable stay at Klein Karoo Game Lodge made it truly special. A beautiful farewell to a familiar road!

I am glad you enjoyed the post – just like we enjoyed staying at Klein Karoo Game Lodge! I believe you can drive the same road a few times and see new things every time – you just have to keep your eyes open and look a little further than just the road. ☺️.

That’s so true! Every trip holds its own surprises, and it’s all about having that curiosity and wonder. Klein Karoo Game Lodge sounds like it was the perfect setting for those moments. Can’t wait to see what new treasures you find next time!

I’d love to take that scenic drive one day Corna. I’ve never tasted ostrich but it sounds delicious and your fine dining dinner and delicious breakfast mouth watering!

We are really spoiled with a variety of scenic drives in SA Marion. Ostrich meat is very tasty (it has a flavour very similar to lean beef – that’s probably why it’s considered a healthy meat option). Oh yes, starting a morning on a long road trip with such a breakfast like we had at Rooiberg Winery was just perfect!

One last time and what a journey! Great brekkie and what a treat to stay at the Klein Karoo Game Lodge. You certainly went out in style! Now wondering how the journey to CT panned out.

This was one of the best road trips from Langebaan to East London – most likely thanks to the places where we enjoyed good food and stayed! We felt very spoiled at Klein Karoo Game Lodge – what a great choice! On the other hand, we were in such a hurry to get to Cape Town once we left East London (trying to be there before the moving company), that it actually turned out to be a very quick final trip back … but it still delivered its surprises 😉.

Road trips are the best especially when you have stunning scenery and wonderful weather. Throw in good food and nice accommodations and it’s perfect. I would settle for just the joy of seeing all those animals. I’m glad you had such a good “last” trip!

I knew you would like this post Carolyn, because you love both road trips and animals! It was wonderful that our last trip from west to east delivered such beautiful places. In our next post we will show this road for the last time (and our return to Cape Town)!

Now, that was one special road trip. Your photography really capture the diversity of your country. Hopefully now you can settle and explore your new/old town.😁 Mel

Road trips are fun – especially when they are full of nice surprises like this one! You’re right, it’s incredible how the regions in our country differ from each other – the West Coast is brown in summer while the East Coast is beautifully green. I can confirm that we are now completely settled, and life is more or less back to normal.
You know, I thought of you today and wondered if you are already busy with your Camino – then I quickly peeked – and excuse me if I am going to bombard your blog now!

That looks a wonderful place to stay and so hospitable. As for the sunset, wow! I think I like best of all the sky after the sun had set, with those amazing clouds!

You’re right Sarah, the sky was at its most beautiful after the sun had already set – that’s why it’s nice when there are clouds around that can capture the colours! A beautiful place that we discovered by accident (which we were very happy about)!

Wow, this looks like a very memorable road trip, Corna, especially as it takes you through such a wonderful and diverse landscape. I think it doesn’t matter how many times you drive the same route, as there’s always something interesting and new to see. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thank you, Tricia – we couldn’t believe our luck when we stumbled upon this beautiful place! You’re right, it had everything (and more) to make it a memorable stay. As you know, it’s sometimes difficult to capture something so beautiful on camera and I’m glad if you think we managed to convey the wonderful feeling we experienced at Klein Karoo Game Lodge.

I’m sure it was a bittersweet feeling to drive this route one last time. Looks like a scenic drive with lots of great stops along the way. Your chalet looks comfortable, cozy and cute. And how awesome that you got to see so much wildlife too. That sunset looked magical.

You’re right Linda, we have always enjoyed this road when we drove between Langebaan and East London (even though it was so long and took us two days to reach our destination). We couldn’t have asked for a better overnight spot – the chalet, the animals, and just the absolute beautiful scenery was perfect to drive from west to east one last time!

It was definitely one of our favourite road trips – probably thanks to our wonderful overnight stay! Where we now live, the road trips will definitely be shorter, because there are so many beautiful places just an hour or two away from our home. Which is of course great, but I will miss those long road trips!

Rooibos cappuccino is the best (if you like tea), but also if you want to experience the creaminess of a cappuccino at the same time. And as you know, we are always happy when we can spot wildlife on our travels – even when we are on a road trip!
