August 2024
We were barely back in East London after our quick visit to our hometown Langebaan, when a long weekend was upon us.
During our visit to Haga Haga last year (read here), we met the owner of Outspan Safaris and Lodge and he suggested that we should visit his lodge whenever we have time. Well, that time was now and we made a reservation for three days and excitedly set off to Outspan Safaris and Lodge late on a Thursday afternoon.
Where is Outspan Safaris and Lodge?
We only had 60 km/37 miles to drive on the N2 towards Mthatha (formerly Umtata), before we had to take the turn off to Outspan Safaris and Lodge. A fairly good dirt road of about 5km/3 miles took us to the gate of the lodge.

At the gate of Outspan Safaris and Lodge
The moment we walked into the lodge, we were already in awe of the view. The lodge is situated on the very edge of a sheer cliff that takes one’s breath away.

Entrance to the lodge
We were warmly greeted by the receptionist. She accompanied us to our unit and informed us what time dinner would be served, which was in the form of a ‘braai’ (barbecue). You can only imagine how happy we were to hear that.

There are 5 adjoining units and we stayed in the last one

Our lovely unit
Our unit had a double bed, two relaxing chairs, coffee/tea station and an on-suite bathroom. There is no television (although there is a big screen television in the main reception area/lounge), but you won’t really miss a television in your unit, because the view from there is insane and will keep you occupied for most of the time.

We quickly dropped our luggage in the unit and then walked to the shared lounge to enjoy a cold beer.

Because Outspan Safaris and Lodge is located on a working farm/game ranch, there is plenty of wildlife to see. Animal mounts are displayed in the shared lounge.

As the sun set, we moved closer to the fire. Stuart Renton, the lodge manager, came to greet us and invited us to hang out with him and a couple of his friends. It was great to get first-hand information about the lodge and also the surroundings.

While drinking a glass of wine, we really enjoyed the company of Stuart and his friends. We ended the evening with delicious home-made carrot cake and were looking forward to exploring Outspan in the next few days.

Wine and dessert
We woke up the next morning to a beautiful sunrise. While sitting outside our unit drinking our early morning coffee and tea, we saw so many birds. Outspan is definitely a bird-watching paradise.

Breakfast, included in our stay, was prepared every morning at a time we had agreed with the chef the night before. Staying at Outspan Safaris and Lodge is almost like being at your own home – except you don’t clean, cook or wash the dishes! We love this kind of weekend breakaways.

Breakfast in the lounge
Stuart told us about a scenic hiking trail the night before. He mentioned that we could see the Kei River from the highest point and that we could even walk down to the river. It was a lovely sunny day and so we packed our backpacks and put on our hiking shoes.

A warm and sunny day – ideal for a hike

Stuart’s dog, Turbo came to see us off
*The hike was indeed scenic, but also quite challenging. You can read about that hike here.
After coming back from our hike, we enjoyed a few cold beers and then lunch which was prepared by the chef. We rested for an hour or so before taking a short walk to find two military graves Stuart had told us about.

Military graves
*The graves are those of two British soldiers who died here in 1835 and 1836. You can read about our visit to the graves here.
As we walked back to the lodge, the sun was casting its last golden rays over a nearby field – for us, late afternoon remains one of the most beautiful times of the day.

We had delicious hamburgers for dinner and very tasty home-made lemon meringue pudding.

Dinner (that lemon meringue pudding was the best)
The next morning, we got up very early to watch a rugby match between the Springboks and the Wallabies (Australia). Just before the game started, we were treated to the most beautiful sunrise.

Another beautiful sunrise

What a gorgeous sunrise

*With the Springboks walking off the field victorious, we decided to explore another trail that Stuart had told us about. Later in the afternoon, Stuart also had a wonderful surprise for us – you can read about that here.
At our last dinner we were treated to more stories from Stuart and his friends. We had such a wonderful time at Outspan Safaris and Lodge and wouldn’t mind going there again. The beautiful surroundings, kindness of the people and delicious food will undoubtedly call any visitor back.

We will be writing a few more posts about our time at Outspan Safaris and Lodge. Next week we’ll tell you about our first hiking trail where we saw the Kei River (and encountered a very steep climb).
Looks like an amazing place for a weekend break, though I am not so keen on mounted heads of animals. Outspan to me means orange juice! You might find this article interesting:

Yes, I can understand that mounted heads of animals are not something that everyone will enjoy. Yet it is something you will see in just about every lodge in South Africa (and Africa). Fortunately, the views outside are beautiful and one doesn’t have to look at an animal’s head all the time! I really enjoyed the story of the Mini Outspan Orange. Outspan reminds me of “nartjies” (clementines) – so, our way of thinking is much the same.

I still call clementines nartjies 😂

Haha, that’s so funny Jude 😂! But I’m also glad to hear that … I sometimes forget what the English name for a “nartjie” is. Oh, and I’d love to hear you pronounce “nartjie” with your English accent!

Wow, what a fantastic place to enjoy true South African hospitality, make great memories and immerse yourself in the soothing nature all while relaxing on the deck, with a million stars above, Corna! I love the property’s tranquil setting as you can take in the spectacular mountainous views, with gorges and hanging cliffs. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

You’re definitely right about the million stars Aiva! Every night, before we went to bed, we first looked up into the sky to see the countless stars! The lodge is definitely situated in a very special place – the high cliffs are breathtakingly beautiful (or should one rather say it’s “terrifyingly” beautiful). The hospitality of the people is one of their greatest assets I think … and that says a lot if you look at the beautiful area.

That is a really stellar view! I can see why you enjoyed it so much and would return. I think I’d have trouble going anywhere except those many balconies overlooking the cliffs.

The views are truly incredible — the sunrises over the hills are just so beautiful. We made sure to spend as much time as possible on the wooden deck during late afternoons just taking in the views (and were also lucky to see quite a few different birds, but unfortunately our reflections with the camera aren’t as sharp and we couldn’t take any photos).

What an idyllic lodge to stay in Corna. Outspan is a name from the past as we always bought Outspan oranges from the greengrocers . I wonder what happened to them! I didn’t even realise they were South African! Getting back to your lodge, it looks so comfortable, barbecue food, wonderful sunsets and great company – what more could you desire!

Yes, Outspan is a brand that is very well known in the fruit industry of South Africa. We often buy Outspan “naartjies” (tangerines/clementines). We had a wonderful stay at Outspan Safaris and Lodge – it’s a great place to get away from the stress of a busy work week … and as you mentioned, everything was top notch (accommodation, food and hospitality of the staff).

The setting is fantastic, love the gorge. I could do without the animal heads though 😊 Maggie

Yes, the animal heads is certainly not to everyone’s taste. But the rest of the lodge (especially those beautiful cliffs and gorge) will have any visitor sitting outside on the wooden deck for hours.

What a fabulous location for a lodge! The views are wonderful and the food looks great, no wonder you enjoyed your stay here. I would love it too, although even more so if it weren’t for those animal heads staring down at me!

It’s best to ignore those animal heads then and instead head outside (no pun intended) to the wooden deck to watch the lovely sunrise and many different birds constantly flying in and out of the gorge. I am impressed with the builders of this lodge … it must have taken courage to build it on the edge of those cliffs.

How wonderful to have such a great place to get away to comparatively close to home. I would enjoy it a lot, especially with a resident dog! Your pictures are lovely too and I look forward to reading more.

As we dig a little deeper, we come across many places that are just a stone’s throw away from our home. Yes, I always feel at home when there’s a resident dog — and Turbo is a great description of what he’s like — always jumping around and running. I really enjoyed him!

Not surprised you enjoyed your stay here, such a lovely place with so many of the things which you arnd Berto enjoy. I bet you’re glad you bumped into the owner that day!

It’s very true Phil – we found everything at Outspan Safaris and Lodge that we love … the ‘braai’ is usually a bonus (but then again, South Africans love to ‘braai’ and a lodge worth its name will definitely offer this to its guests)! Absolutely, if we hadn’t met the owner of Outspan last year, we would never knew about this beautiful place!

I think you have the right word here Tricia – tranquil is perfect to describe Outspan Safaris and Lodge! Stuart made our stay very enjoyable and we greatly appreciated his time. You’ll understand what I mean when I write about our Saturday afternoon with him and a few of his friends.

You’re right, the view of our room was breathtaking … I could lie under the duvet on the bed and watch the sunrise through the big glass doors (it was perfect for the chilly morning). Ah, the food – I wonder if we’re just easily satisfied with food, because we’ve rarely had a bad plate of food!

Thank you Mélodie. It was a great weekend to recharge the old bodies’ batteries a bit again! The walk was actually more beautiful than challenging … but the steep uphill on our way back (and on a hot day) pushed our heart rate up a bit!

What a stunning location, the views are incredible. I love the look of your unit, clean and cozy. The food prepared at the lodge seems excellent, particularly all the various desserts (lemon meringue pudding is a divine treat). The sunrise shots and colours are really spectacular. Looking forward to your upcoming article about the hike.

The lodge is definitely located in one of the best places we have ever been. You’re right, we had delicious meals (I’ll never complain if there’s lemon meringue on the menu)! And as you know, we’re suckers for a beautiful sunrise. I hope you enjoy the hike post – between the huffing and puffing, we loved the stunning views!

The people who built this lodge definitely had a vision of incredible beauty. How do we find these places? Haha, we read a lot and enlarge a map to see more of those places that doesn’t appear in magazines or on social media! Or wait … maybe we’re just really curious to see what’s around the next corner!
