July 2024
While we were at our home on the West Coast for a quick visit, we only had a few days of sunshine (we are in the middle of winter after all).
One of these sunny days started with a dark sky and heavy rain. After the rain, we saw bright colours through our sliding door. We walked out of the house and were surprised to see one of the most beautiful rainbows ever – there was even evidence of a faint double rainbow.

Do you see the double rainbow?

Rainbow over Langebaan
Finally, the rain gave way and the winter sun drove away the clouds. Even though it was cold, the sun and mostly blue skies called for a quick trip. My mum and I, dressed in warm jackets, decided to explore the beach of the nearby town of Saldanha Bay.
*Berto had to attend an online work meeting, but we promised we’d bring something special for him.
Saldanha Bay:
Saldanha Bay, also called Saldanha, is just 21km/13 miles from Langebaan and has a natural harbour. Its local economy is heavily dependent on fishing, seafood processing, the steel industry and the harbour. The 800km long Sishen-Saldanha railway line that starts in Sishen in the Northern Cape Province ends here in Saldanha and the sheltered harbour plays an important role in the iron-ore project.
We decided to drive to the beach from where one can see part of the town, as well as the iron-ore operations.

From the beach we could see beautiful houses

We could see large cargo ships in the harbour, probably waiting to load iron-ore. From here it is then exported to countries such as China, the Netherlands, South Korea, Mozambique and Germany.

I like the round rocks that are in the sea near the beach. We have walked here on the beach a few times in the summer and always saw children jumping from the high rocks into the sea. However, today we only saw seagulls sitting on the rocks and walking around on the beach.

My mum and I wrapped our jackets tighter around us to protect us from the cold wind. A little further on, two fishermen sat on the rocks and braved the cold while trying to catch fish. However, it seemed to me that it was only the many seagulls that enjoyed the cold weather. We could also see a lot of kelp on the beach that washed up from the sea during the recent storm.

The seagulls loved the cold winter day
Saldanha Bay harbour is not only known for iron ore, but also for oysters and mussels. The waters provide a naturally protected environment for the farming of oysters and mussels. We saw some smaller boats that were quite active at the farm.

I mentioned to my mother earlier that Berto and I were going to miss the spring wildflower season this year on the West Coast. So, I was very happy when I saw a lovely gazania near our car.

Beautiful gazania
It was now time to look for a place where we could drink something warm against the cold. I knew where we had to go – Cup of Cake, a cozy coffee shop was just a few minutes’ drive away.
Cup of Cake:
When we walked into the coffee shop, we knew we were definitely not going to order just coffee! The most beautiful looking cupcakes in the display counter made it difficult to decide what to enjoy with our coffee.
My mum’s choice was a carrot cake cupcake while I couldn’t resist the beautiful lemon meringue cupcake.

After enjoying our delicious cupcakes, we went for a quick walk on the nearby beach for the last time before heading back to Langebaan.

More seagulls on the beach

**Are these ducks or maybe sea ducks? I’ve never seen them on a beach before
Even though it was cold, we enjoyed Saldanha Bay’s beach without the crowds that usually come here in the summer months. And a cupcake on a cold winter day is always a winner.
* If you’re wondering whether I kept my promise … yes, Berto got an amazing chocolate cupcake.
**Aletta (nowathome) informed me that these birds are actually geese. They live near Cup of Cake and often walk on the beach. Thanks Aletta!
Pleasant day out with Mum, though for me (I know you’ll hate me for this!) you can keep your cupcakes, I don’t see what the attraction is. Throw stones at me now 😂. I think those birds are geese rather than ducks but I may be wrong.

I knew I wouldn’t have impressed you with my cupcake Phil! The attraction? Just look how beautiful it is … almost too beautiful to eat! Oh well, we can’t all like cupcakes (and it’s not the healthiest snack out there anyway)! I also wondered if it might not be geese – but do geese roam the beach?

Ek kan my net indink hoe spesiaal julle kuiertjies saam is.

I tend to prefer beaches in the winter so I would have enjoyed this walk and the coffee and cupcake treat afterwards 😀 I’m glad you took one home for Berto!

I always think, when it’s so cold and I’m on the beach, that I could have curled up on the couch under a blanket instead … but then I see how beautiful the beach is on a winter’s day and all is forgotten! I certainly wouldn’t have heard the end of it if I hadn’t taken a cupcake for Berto.

A perfect winter’s day walk Corna, and how lovely to spend it with your mom. The cup cakes looked rather evil – I too would have opted for the lemon meringue. Those look like snow geese on the beach. Though I didn’t think they migrated that far south. Whatever they are they are beautiful.

It’s one of the most beautiful (and least crowded) beaches on the West Coast – even in summer. Apparently, according to Aletta of the blog “Now at home” who lives nearby, they are definitely geese and live at the back of the Cup of Cakes building. They stroll on the beach every day before the go back to Cup of Cakes in the evening … I wonder if they get cupcake crumbs. Must be a happy life!

That was a wonderful rainbow. It would make a great postcard of Langebaan! I always liked the seashore during winter much better than summer, maybe because it is so quiet and I like hearing the sounds of nature. My mum and I used to stop for coffee and a cake when we went shopping. It was such a nice little treat tat we shared together. I’m sure Berto was happy with his goodie!

We took so many pictures of that lovely rainbow (it was truly special). My mum and I always make time to enjoy coffee when shopping (we don’t always eat something, but we just couldn’t resist the beautiful cupcakes). Haha, Berto was more than happy with his cupcake … that was his sugar intake for the week!

You and your mum found the perfect combination for a winter’s day; a beautiful beach, a warm beverage and cupcakes! And all in a beautiful location.

You’re right Tricia, it was the perfect combination! This is such a beautiful beach (and even in summer there are not so many tourists as in our hometown), so it’s always a good option to come for a stroll on this beach. And who can resist those amazing looking cupcakes!

Those rainbows have been wonderfully captured Corna and what can I say about those cupcakes. I would gave plumped for the lemon meringue one too!

Rainbows and cupcakes – both equally beautiful, aren’t they? I’m a big fan of lemon meringue and while there were many other flavours of cupcakes, this was my first choice (and I wasn’t disappointed)!

What a beautiful double rainbow! Saldanha Bay looks like a gorgeous spot to explore, even in the winter. I’d be ordering one of those cupcakes too! They look delicious! Yum!

I have to admit, this was one of the most beautiful rainbows we’ve ever seen! It’s great that Saldanha Bay is so close to our home in Langebaan … perfect for a nice stroll on the lovely beach and to buy one (or more) of those amazing cupcakes!

It was indeed lovely to spend time with my mum. And it’s always nice to go for a stroll on the beach when we get to our beach house … I prefer summer, of course, but the winter months have its own charm.

What a gorgeous double rainbow! I was just telling my husband yesterday that because of your blog I saw a part of Africa I never knew existed. So much water and beautiful beaches like this one and those rocks! But the most beautiful part had to be the cupcakes of course. 🤣

Loved that double rainbow! I’m so happy we can bring the beauty of South Africa into your home Diane! The beaches here are some of the most beautiful that I have ever seen – white soft sand … it just spells summer (even in winter)! Oh, that cupcakes!! I think there was like 8 different types of cupcakes – we’ll have to go back again!

It was one of the most beautiful rainbows I’ve ever seen Hannah – the colours were so intense! Saldanha Bay was definitely a good choice for a beach visit because it’s always so peaceful there (even in summer). And well, I’m not going to complain about a cupcake (or two) …

I love beach walks in any season. Winter brings a different kind of beauty to the sea and the desolate windswept beach is a wonderful sight to enjoy. How lovely that you could spend such a day with your mum. The cupcakes look delicious and with a hot cup of coffee they are a perfect treat after braving the cold weather.

I agree with you Leighton – a walk on any day on the beach, is a good day! And spending time with my mum was great – we definitely enjoyed the cupcakes (maybe we should have taken takeaways) …

Don’t you just love how in contrast to a crowded visual city landscape, looking out to sea has no focal point—it’s an endless stretch the mind can explore very simply, It’s difficult to think of a place that offers a more relaxing aspect than a seaside venue. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
