June 2024
Addo Elephant National Park, one of South Africa’s 20 national parks, is the third largest game reserve in the country (after the Kruger National Park and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park).
We came here hoping to see elephants (of course), but were totally surprised with not only the stunning views of elephants, but also the many other animals.
Since we’re in the park right now (and WiFi is not great), we’ll just put a postcard on our blog today.

The world’s largest land animal
We can’t wait to share more of our wonderful visit to the Addo Elephant National Park with you.
What a beautiful shot! It sounds amazing, Corna.

What an incredible experience! I have no idea how we are going to choose photos for our blog. I have always loved elephants, but after this visit, they are my new favourite animal!

Thanks so much for the link Jude – it was wonderful to read! We entered the park at the south entrance (Colchester), which was a very good choice. And as you mention in your post, there were times when I was pretty uncomfortable with how close the elephants were to our ‘bakkie’, but what an incredible experience. Oh yes, we’ve also seen the Fiscal Flycatcher – it’s such a beautiful birdie. I can’t wait to start writing about our time in the Addo!

I love elephants, Corna. Not only because they are the largest of all land mammals, but also because these majestic animals are highly intelligent, demonstrating behaviours such as self-awareness, compassion, grief and altruism. Addo Elephant National Park sounds like a park with an abundant and flourishing environment where you can see many incredible animals. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx.

I mentioned in the comments just now that elephants are my new favourite animal! And you’re right that one can see the emotions on their faces. Because we could see them up close, it was easy to notice whether they were stressed or just happy to drink water at the waterhole. It’s definitely worth visiting Addo Elephant National Park – not only are you going to see elephants, but so many other wild animals too.

Thanks Tricia. I know I say this after every weekend away, but this is definitely one of our highlights this year! Estimated by the amount of photos we took, it’s going to take me a year to share everything with you guys 🙂 … but I’m going to try not to make it too long though!

Oh Diane, we had such a wonderful time in the park. It’s only when an elephant stands just a few feet away from you, that you realise how big they really are! There are so many photos, that I’m going to be sharing them on our blog in a couple of posts … I’m sure you’re going to like them 🙂.

It was one of our most memorable weekends yet. To be able to see the elephants — and other wild animals — in their natural habitat in such close proximity was an amazing experience. I’ll start our first post this coming Monday and will probably stretch it for a couple of weeks … there was so much beauty that it is impossible to do it in one or two posts!

I’m really glad those are the qualities you see in the elephant in our photo … because that’s exactly how we experienced them. Thank you so much for your comments, it’s much appreciated.
