On the banks of the Kwelera River
When we returned to East London at the end of our summer holiday at the beginning of January, we loaded up our ‘bakkie’ (truck) with our camping gear. It was time to camp on the south-east coast of South Africa – something we hadn’t done before and were really looking forward to!
Our first camping weekend was at Areena Riverside Resort on the banks along the Kwelera River. We stayed here in a timber chalet last year (read here) and promised ourselves we would come and camp here … we were so happy to be back at Areena!
Where is Areena Riverside Resort:
This lovely resort is only 23km/14 miles from East London on the Wild Coast, along the banks of the unspoilt Kwelera River.

This time it’s not a chalet, but our beloved tent
We were lucky to have a hot weekend for our first camping weekend of the year – temperatures were in the mid 30°C/86°F – ideal weather conditions for relaxing along the Kwelera River.

The Kwelera River was picture perfect

View of the river from the ablution facilities
There are quite a few plots at Areena Riverside Resort where people have set up permanent residences with their caravans and tents. Close to our plot was such a permanent setup and it was great to see how they put out food for the wild animals in the area.

Small bushbuck and bunnies enjoy food near our tent
After setting up our tent it was time to make a fire to prepare our food. We sat back in our camp chairs and enjoyed the gentle flow of the river as the moon rose. Life is good.

A fire and glass of wine – camping is the best!

Hot coals to prepare our garlic chicken, ‘boerewors’ (sausage) and ‘braai broodjie’ (grilled sandwich)
We were up early the next morning and the river was like a mirror in front of our tent. There’s not much wrong if you wake up with a view like this.

Our view for the weekend, the lovely Kwelera River
On our way to the ablution facilities, to wash the sleep from our eyes, we walked past some of the permanent animal residents.

The handsome Nyala, one of Africa’s most alert antelope
Berto made us real camp coffee and afterwards we enjoyed a delicious breakfast of Peri-peri chicken livers (this was our Dish of the Week #16 – read here).

Coffee and breakfast
A few plots from our tent, a family was camping and the father and his little boy were fishing in the Kwelera River early in the morning. We brought our fishing rods with us and decided to go and buy fishing bait at the small shopping center close to Areena.
Crossways Village Shopping Complex is conveniently located 6km/3.7 miles from Areena Riverside Resort and we were surprised to find several shops there.

A big Superspar for all your grocery needs (and fishing bait)

There’s even a hair salon and big dam with koi fish
Although there are quite a few small shops to browse through at Crossways, we preferred the tranquility of the river instead. It was also very hot and we hadn’t visited the pool yet – it was time to return to Areena.

Lovely gardens at Areena Riverside Resort

Time to cool off in the sparkling pool
After cooling off, we walked back to our tent to prepare lunch. We made a fire to ‘braai’ ‘boerewors’ (sausage) for our hotdogs.

Back at our tent we saw a small barge on the river

Another fire for our ‘boerewors’ (sausage)

It was now time for a bit of fishing. Berto often fishes when we are in Langebaan, but I’m still a rookie. He caught one small fish which he put back in the river. And I can confirm that I can throw a line in the water pretty neatly, but that the fish swam wide circles around my fishing rod’s small hook!

Fishing while camping – another way to relax
At least it wasn’t a disaster that we didn’t catch any fish, because we brought lamb with us to prepare for dinner. While I cooked rice on our camp stove, Berto made a delicious lamb stew in our ‘potjie’.

Dinner time
On our last day, the bushbuck came to greet us at our tent early in the morning. We decided to go for a short walk before making breakfast and starting to pack up everything.

On our walk we saw the father and his little boy fishing again. We talked about how wonderful it is to see the little one fishing with his dad instead of sitting with a cellphone – almost unthinkable these days.

As a bonus, we ran into a few more animals from Areena.

After our morning stroll, Berto made a delicious bacon and cheese omelette. It was time to pack up our tent, but not for long, because we were already planning our next camping weekend.

Areena Riverside Resort is such a lovely place and it’s neat with friendly staff. It was once again an absolute pleasure for us to spend a weekend here.
A magic spot!

Hello!

Dis ‘n vroue ding …

What a fabulous spot! Those golden trees look wonderful reflected in the river.

I think the golden trees might be a taste of our autumn that’s around the corner — the most beautiful season for me. It’s a lovely resort indeed … camp site number 71 will probably see us again!

Dis darem baie makliker (en goedkoper) as mens jou kamp toerusting byderhand het! ‘n Pragtige plek en beslis die moeite werd om weer terug te gaan.

What a lovely camping weekend it was! The first time in a year we’re camping again … and now we just can’t get enough of it!

Sounds blissful. Though I’m far too old to camp anymore. 😂 Being close to nature is very relaxing and food cooked outdoors always seems to taste better.

Yes, camping probably becomes a bit more of a challenge as one gets older. But it’s so much fun 😀. We’ll just camp until we can’t get up from the stretchers anymore! It’s true – even just a boiled egg tastes better when you eat it outdoors!

The Areena Riverside Resort looks to be a delightful spot fir a camping weekend and what with such delicious camp cooking by Berto, the nature and wildlife, it looks gorgeous.

This is such a beautiful resort where one can relax for a weekend (or longer). And Berto always makes sure we eat well — that’s probably why I look forward to our camping weekends!

I still don’t know which is better … to camp by the sea/river or in the mountains. But I have to admit, this riverside campground was definitely one of the best we’ve ever had!

This is the kind of camping I would enjoy, a wonderful location, lots of animals and a chef to provide tasty meals. My one and only camping trip was missing a few of the essentials! I agree that it is nice to see a young boy enjoying an experience with his dad. The Nyala…what a gorgeous creature!

I’m sure you would have really enjoyed the wildlife in particular! If the father hadn’t caught fish with his son, he would have kicked a ball with him on the playground – it was so lovely to see. And I think the Nyala is one of the most beautiful antelopes I’ve ever seen (and it was great to see him up close … imagine my surprise when I opened the bathroom door and saw him standing just a few steps away).

I see Canada Day is in July – it’s your summer then, right? Perfect for a long weekend of camp I’d say! May this be the start of many more camp weekends! Happy planning 🙂.

It looks and sounds amazing! What a beautiful place to go camping, Corna. I love your little set-up and all the wonderful animals on the site. I had no idea that you guys have Spar shops in South Africa, too. Thanks for sharing, and have a wonderful day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thanks Aiva. Yes, this is a beautiful campsite – I can understand why so many people come here to rest for a weekend (or longer). We have a Spar in (almost) every town in South Africa. I remember we also saw quite a few Spar shops in Spain when we walked the Camino. It’s our favourite store where we go for our monthly shopping. Have a great week.

Your campsite looks absolutely idyllic. You have perfected the art of camping; from finding the perfect location, to cooking delicious food, and creating the most comfortable camp site; well done Corna and Berto!

It’s such a beautiful place to simply rest and enjoy the beauty of nature (sometimes these kind of weekends are also necessary). Thanks Tricia, we camp with just the basics when it’s over a weekend … then there’s less stuff to pack up when we need to go home again (but you’re right, it’s still very comfortable).

The windless days made for the most beautiful reflections in the river! So far, it’s the only camping ground we’ve been to where the wild animals move around among the campers — it’s been pretty amazing.

It’s a really lovely spot. There’s so much to do (hiking, quad biking, segway tours, zipline, abseiling) … or you can just sit by the river and enjoy the scenery. I would say there’s literally something to do for every person who gets there.

After a year of no camping, this one was definitely a good start! It’s also the first time that while we’re camping, we’ve been surrounded by so much wildlife. Yes, we can’t complain … this weekend had everything (and more)!

Such a nice way to get close to nature 🙂 And of course the bottle of wine with BBQ fired sausages – sign me up!

While camping may not be as convenient and luxurious as a five-star hotel, it is, as you rightly say, the best way to get close to nature. Oh wait, the wine and fire are the luxuries one experiences on a camp weekend (but I had to bring our own soft towels 🙂)!

Ha ha, love the bit of this story where you basically say “So we didn’t catch any fish…. oh well… well just have to eat this delicious lamb”. Your little setup down by the river looks so ridiculously idyllic, the perfect spot for lazing, fishing and eating all that delicious food you made. Love all the wildlife too, did bunny bushbuck get along ok? Great fishing shots of you both

Haha 🙂, I don’t think I would have eaten the fish I caught myself. When Berto caught that little one, I immediately said “oh shame”… but still, I will eat fish in a restaurant – weird, I know! Areena was a great start to our camping weekends here on the southeastern coast of the country (we’ve camped at two more places in the meantime and it just keeps getting better)! I was also surprised how the bunnies and bushbuck stood side by side eating from the same bowl … can we just go and learn from the animals!

Looks a great spot to camp. Yes, it’s always good to have a backup plan in case you can’t catch any fish. Cheers, Mark

It seems to me, when it comes to fishing, I will definitely have to have a Plan B & C! Thank you Mark, Areena is a lovely place – the tranquillity along the river is just what one needs after a week of madness at work.
