February 2024
After many sea views this past December holiday, it was time for a break in the mountains. The Winterberg Mountains sounded like a good option and when we started looking for accommodation, our choice immediately fell on the 120-year old Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel. This hotel is located on Katberg Eco Golf Estate and only 200km/124 miles from East London.
After driving through Fort Beaufort, the hotel is about 45km/27 miles further. The last 30km/18 miles are on a dirt road which is not in the best condition. But the views are so beautiful that we didn’t mind slowing down a bit. And, although many people think you might need a 4×4 vehicle to drive this road, it’s good to know that a normal sedan will also be able to drive here.

The moment we drove through the gates of Katberg Eco Golf Estate, we were overwhelmed by the incredibly beautiful landscape.

Entrance to Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel
The Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel was closed for a few years but recently reopened. Although they are currently undergoing upgrades, they do receive guests and we were given a lovely double room overlooking the beautiful garden.

Our room with a view over the garden
The weather forecast for the weekend was high summer temperatures in the mid 30°C/86°F and after dropping our luggage in our room we immediately made our way to the pool – what a welcome sight.

A bridge led us to the pool
After freshening up, we walked to the dining room where we first had a couple of drinks on the balcony. Dinner was a three-course meal, which we thoroughly enjoyed while we basked in the old-world charm of the Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel.

Starter and main course
To miss the heat, we got up at 6 o’clock the next morning to walk the ring road of the golf course. Nothing could prepare us for the amazing views that we would enjoy for the next hour and a half.

The start of our morning walk
As well as being one of the more isolated courses in the country, Katberg Golf Course is also only one of four courses to have a par-3 18th hole.
Berto occasionally plays a game of golf and he was very impressed with the course. But I think, even if you don’t play golf, the views on this golf course makes it an absolute pleasure to go for a stroll.

House on the estate
I’m not sure how many times we oohed and aahed as we walked the 7km/4.3 mile ring road. It didn’t actually matter where we looked … we were surrounded by a kind of beauty that we hadn’t seen much of in our travels thus far.

One of many dams on the golf course

So many lovely trees

We loved the light and dark green colours in the mountains

The mountains form the perfect backdrop

And another lovely tree

We also spotted quite a few antelope on the golf course. They allowed us to get quite close to them, before walking away to graze peacefully.

Antelopes on the golf course

They are definitely not on a golf outing

We just couldn’t get enough of the stunning views
Near the hotel we saw another herd of antelopes. This time it was springboks, which are one of the most beautiful smaller antelopes in nature.

Back at the hotel, we showered and enjoyed a hearty breakfast. Afterwards we took a leisurely walk through the hotel’s garden. The garden is built in terraces which create very nice photo opportunities. This is probably also why many weddings have been held here over the years.

Rooms at Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel
There are several areas where guests can relax. At the entrance of the hotel there is a lovely room with bookshelves where you can sit and read.

Relaxing areas at the hotel
Although we would have liked to do one of the hotel’s many hiking trails, it was just too hot for that. Instead, we took our towels to spend time at the pool.

Time to cool down at the hotel’s pool
We arranged a picnic basket at the hotel which they brought down to the pool for us. This included a bottle of sparkling wine which was perfect for the hot afternoon.

Picnic at the pool
In the late afternoon we decided to follow the ring road of the golf course again, but this time we drove it. We wanted to see how the golf course looked in the afternoon light … and it was still picture perfect.

Even the shades of green against the mountains looked different

Morning or afternoon – the views remain stunning
Dinner was in the form of a ‘braai’ (barbecue) and the staff set tables outside where we could all relax while they prepared the food.

The chef busy with a ‘braai’
The chef prepared delicious salads and we had options of chicken, lamb and ‘boerewors’ (sausage). For me, however, the highlight was the dessert – traditional milk tart. It was delicious!

The next morning, we enjoyed a delicious breakfast for the last time in the dining room of the hotel before we drove back to East London.

And so are muesli and yoghurt

It was a wonderful stay and we just couldn’t get enough of the stunning views. We sincerely hope that people will support Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel now that they have reopened. We wish them all the best for the future.

Sounds like an excellent weekend away. Although I have visited Fort Beaufort many times (my ex in-laws lived there) I do not recall the Katberg mountains. I’ll have to use Google maps to locate them.

It was truly one of those magic weekends (I’d love to see this part of the world in the winter). Katberg is on the road between Fort Beaufort and Cathcart. I must say that Fort Beaufort is one of the neater towns in the Eastern Cape that we have seen so far.

Ah, yes. I see now. We mostly got there from the west, living in Cape Town. Alice, Hogsback and route 6 to Bloem when in Joburg. With relatives around FB and Port Alfred we rarely went into the mountains. We quite liked Grahamstown, now Makhanda, though often got caught in a speed trap there at the bottom of a steep hill! 😂 Funny the things you remember.

Grahamstown (or then Makhanda) is also on our list, we haven’t been there yet … I’ll have to remember to tell Berto about the speed trap 😂.

Wow, it’s so beautiful! The antelope on the golf course are just such an amazing sight. I would love to stay here and just soak in those views and sunshine 🙂

I think you’ll especially like the sunshine Hannah! Yes, who thought you could watch wildlife while playing golf (or walking the ring road of a golf course)? It’s such a beautiful place … we would love to see what it looks like during winter. Because it’s so high in the mountains, I can only imagine how cold it could get there (and maybe snow too). We’ll have to keep an eye on the snow calendar!

Wow, what a truly wonderful place to stay and relax, Corna. I love the expansive lawns and large gardens not to mention the pool and the surrounding mountains. I am glad you had a wonderful stay. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

The views were amazing … in particular, I think how the colours on the mountains were constantly changing was absolutely stunning. The hotel’s garden is so big – I don’t think we saw everything (the best place was anyway at the pool in the heat). Thanks Aiva, we hope your week is a great one too.

It is truly a hidden gem among the mountains! We are so glad we ‘discovered’ this beautiful place while we are here in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Those views are absolutely stunning; I’d never want to leave. Looks like a perfect place for a weekend getaway. I’ve heard of water hazards on golf courses, but not wildlife hazards. If I was playing it would be the longest game ever since I’d want to stop and take photos. The springbok are lovely; they look like the dear we have in North America. Lovely post Corna.

We enjoyed every moment here. It is incredibly beautiful between the mountains. I agree with you, I don’t think I’ll be able to play golf while surrounded by so much beauty! The springbok is my favourite of the small antelopes – I’m always so happy when I come across them in the wild. Thanks for stopping by Tricia, I always enjoy your comments.

What a wonderful setting for a resort. It’s always good to view a place at different times of day and different lighting. The resort seems like the sort of place I would enjoy, all shady and surrounded by gardens and with visiting wildlife. You certainly give them a great review. I hope they will do well. How cold will it get there in winter? Nice way to spend a hot day, by the pool with a picnic!

According to the manager, the Katberg Hotel was also a sanatorium in earlier years – I would love to hear the history. But it’s definitely a beautiful place surrounded by incredible scenery. I’m not sure how cold it can get, but according to the internet, the temperatures in winter average 7C/44F … I’m actually surprised it’s not colder. But it can definitely get hot in the summer — the picnic by the pool was the best idea of the weekend!

It’s beautiful between the mountains – we’d love to do some of the hiking trails, but it was just too hot. Hmm, I think I prefer antelope on the golf course rather than bears!

What a lovely place, Corna! I often think that golf courses are wasted on golfers. Just gazing at the scenery is sufficient.

A weekend is hopelessly too short to take in all the beauty! Ha, I’ll be a bad golf player on this course … my attention will be more towards the scenery than at the small white ball!

Staying at the Katberg Mountain Resort & Hotel surely is a wonderful treat with it’s scenic setting, golf course and antelopes roaming around. I particularly liked the idea of having a picnic basket delivered for lunch, I’d love that too and of course the South African barbecue with those delicious meats and then a yummy milk pudding. Thanks for sharing and have a good week. M.

Jy’s reg Aletta, dis ‘n ander mooi wat ons nie ken nie! Die berge in die Wes Kaap (en veral die Sederberge) het meer skakerings van oranje en bruin … terwyl dit hier in die Oos Kaap so mooi groen is!

Wonderful scenery, no wonder you loved this walk. Such a shame to have blighted it with an area for people with nothing better to do to go round hitting a ball with a stick 😂😂. You’ve got me longing to be back in hot weather. It’s so, so miserable in England just now. Grey, cold, and soooo much rain…

Ha, I wonder if the golfers even notice the scenery? We’ve had a wonderfully long and hot summer this year … I wouldn’t mind a cold spell (but maybe only for just a few days 🙂). Hopefully, spring is finding its way quickly towards the UK.

I always think when we go to such beautiful places, why should a weekend have only 2 days! We kinda thought about putting some of these photos in a frame – pretty as a picture!

Well this certainly doesn’t seem like it would be anyone’s “last resort”. (Ugh sorry, crap joke). Seriously, this place has all the hallmarks of a great hotel. When there’s a long dirt track just to enter the grounds and a bridge needed to access the pool you just know it’s gonna be good. What absolutely gorgeous scenery you encountered Corna, we literally want to go and live in that house at the foot of the mountain. Sladja is ready to start packing. Stunning trees, lovely colours in the sky and magnificent food. What a treat.

Katberg Hotel and surroundings is a lovely place where one can just relax and enjoy the beauty. You would have to travel very far from Malaysia to South Africa to visit this gem of a place … but it’s definitely worth it if such an opportunity ever presents itself.
