Cottage Pie (with a twist)
In Afrikaans, we would call this dish a ‘Herderspastei’, which translates to Shepherd’s Pie. But the difference between Shepherd’s Pie and Cottage Pie lies in what kind of ground meat (mince) you use:
- Cottage Pie: Ground beef
- Shepherd’s Pie: Ground lamb
So, for all intents and purposes, we’re making a Cottage Pie today. The twist lies in the topping – we’re not going to put the usual mashed potato on top, but rather mashed sweet potato. Not only is it healthier, but in my opinion, also tastier.
Put it on the table – Ground beef mixture:
We are first going to show you how to prepare the ground beef mixture. We have been making this recipe for the past 20 years and it remains one of the tastiest plates of comfort food out there.

Ingredients for ground beef mixture
500g ground beef (mince)
5 fresh tomatoes, chopped (or one can of chopped tomatoes)
1 onion, chopped
3 carrots, chopped
3 celery sticks, chopped
4 cloves of garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons tomato paste
3 cloves
3 bay leaves
1 teaspoon crushed coriander seeds
salt and pepper
olive oil

Chopped vegetables
Heat a little olive oil in a large casserole on the stove top and sauté the chopped onion until slightly soft. Add now the rest of the chopped vegetables (not the tomatoes) and sauté until tender.

Fry the onion first and then the rest of the vegetables
Add the ground beef and spices to the vegetables in the casserole and fry until browned.

Browned ground beef
Stir in the tomato paste and let it cook for about 2 minutes.

The tomato paste gives a nice colour to the dish
Finally, it’s time for the chopped tomatoes. Stir it through, cover the casserole and let it simmer on low heat for about 45 minutes.

Add the chopped tomatoes

Add a little water if the mixture becomes too dry
Put it on the table – mashed sweet potato:
While the ground beef mixture is simmering, prepare the topping of mashed sweet potato.

Ingredients for mashed sweet potato
1 big sweet potato, chopped (or 3 medium sized sweet potatoes)
3 tablespoons plain yoghurt
2 tablespoons butter
grated cheddar cheese (enough to cover the dish)
Cook the chopped sweet potato in a saucepan in lightly salted water until soft, about 15 minutes. Drain the water through a colander.

Cook and drain sweet potato
By using your potato masher, mash the cooked sweet potato lightly and add yoghurt, butter and salt to taste and combine.

Sweet potato topping
Place the meat mixture in a greased baking dish and spoon the mashed sweet potato on top. Sprinkle with grated cheese.

Grated cheese on top to finish it off
Bake the cottage pie in a preheated oven at 180°C/356°F for about 30 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Delicious cottage pie
As a side dish, we mixed butternut with cinnamon and melted butter and then roasted it in the oven for 30 minutes. It was delicious with the cottage pie.

We got Cottage Pie a lot in hostel when I was in secondary school … but despite this 🙂, it’s still one of my favourites!

Surely it would be hard to ruin this dish? 🙂

That’s for sure. And there’s so many variations, one really can’t go wrong!

For the first time ever I added a little bit of flour to the meat and and it gave it a fabulous texture. I had to rely on a recipe for that tip! 👩🍳👩🍳😁

Ah, it seems to me Cottage Pie/Shepherd’s Pie is a definite favourite. You’re the second blogger to mention that you made it recently!

A good staple comfort food especially in winter months. We often use mashed cauliflower as a healthier topping. Works just as well with a fish pie too!

Yes, we also made it with mashed cauliflower before (I love it, but Berto isn’t a big fan). We both like sweet potatoes, so that is our go-to topping. You know what, I’ve only ate fish pie a couple of times (prepared by someone else), but I’ve never made it myself. Maybe something I can try one day …

I love fish pie, but have had to stop eating the yellow smoked haddock as I seem to have developed an allergy to the colouring. But a salmon and cod mix would work. And I think in the past I have seen smoked haddock that hasn’t been dyed.

I would love salmon and cod in a fish pie. The most popular fish that we use here for a fish pie is “snoek” (which is very close to the taste of mackerel). But you probably know this fish, right?

Yes, I remember snoek. Also skate wings!

I’m passing this on to Grant who has just been looking for such a recipe! Perfect timing. Thank you!

Pleasure is all mine! I hope Grant is going to like this! Sweet potato is a good substitute for the (less healthy) potato, so this dish should work for him.

Ooh, I haven’t made one of these in forever. Looks great and adding it to my dinner plans for next week.

Cottage Pie appears regularly on our menu – it’s just so easy to make and a really great dish. We always make enough for the next day too!

Not the best time to be reading this as I’ve just scoffed a pretty substantial dinner, but it does look good. Interesting the variations. I would never think of putting cloves in. Would you use yogurt with mashed potato too? I always use just a splash of milk.

Oh, I hope you didn’t go to bed too hungry Jo 😁! You’re right, there are so many variations of Cottage Pie — the veggies can range from peas to corn. That’s probably why it’s such a popular dish – you can throw in just what you like! We pretty much put cloves in all of our meat/chicken dishes — it gives such a delicious flavour. Yogurt works well with sweet potato, but when we do use mashed potatoes, we also just pour in a little milk.

Delicious! I’m definitely going to make this Corna. Oddly. I never make a Cottage or Shepherds Pie at home though I use mince for Lasagne and Bolognese dishes. When we are eating out in pubs in winter I often go for Shepherds Pie as lamb in any form is my favourite!

With me it’s just the other way around again – I never order Cottage Pie in a restaurant, but I like to make it at home. Oh yes, I agree with you Marion, lamb is so versatile (and it’s always tender when you use it in stews).

I make cottage pie with sliced potato topping instead of mash. That way I can tell the difference.

Sliced potato topping? I’ve never tried this before, but it sounds delicious! Thanks for the tip Andrew.

Cottage Pie (and for that matter Shepard’s Pie as well) is a favourite dish of mine. My grandmother use to make it all the time while I was growing up. The choice of sweet potato topping is excellent as you say they are so much healthier than regular potatoes and the taste better.

It’s also one of the dishes my grandmother used to make for us when we visited her during our winter school holidays. And I got it often in the hostel when I was in secondary school (at least once a week). So it’s actually weird that I still like it so much … maybe because of the twist of sweet potato topping 😁.

Linda, I think you and I both love our melted cheese in dishes! It would have been very bad for me if I had to be lactose intolerant …
