December 2023
No visit to Langebaan is complete if you haven’t strolled along the beach. It was very appropriate to end 2023 by going for a walk along the lovely Langebaan lagoon. A mojito and beautiful sunset ended the year perfectly.
On our visit earlier in the day, we saw quite a few kite surfers frolicking on the lagoon. This time of year, kite surfers come from all over the world to enjoy the perfect kite surfing conditions in Langebaan. When walking on the beach, it is therefore no surprise to hear English, German, Dutch, Polish and several other languages ββwithin just a few hundred meters.

While lessons are offered to beginners, there are also quite a few of these kite surfers who are very good and they always entertain the beachgoers with their speed and tricks.

There are so many activities on the lagoon during the summer months. Apart from the kite surfers going back and forth through the water, there are constantly boats out on the lagoon – either to catch fish or just to have fun. People on kayaks also regularly paddle on the lagoon. It was great to check out all these activities while we went for a late afternoon stroll.

Kayaks between the anchored boats
By early evening most of the water activities had come to an end. There were still a few sailing boats on the lagoon, but the kite surfers were busy packing up and boats were taken out of the water.

With our feet still full of sea sand, we found an open table at RocXiBeach Restaurant where we enjoyed cocktails and beers as the last rays of the sun of 2023 disappeared.

Mojito Cocktail to celebrate the end of 2023
We watched in awe as the sky changed colour as the sun set. It was time to end the year with a βbraaiβ while surrounded by family and friends. We looked back with gratitude at 2023 – a year with many challenges, but one that we conquered through His grace.

Soft patches of clouds decorated the sky

In the east were signs of last thunder clouds

In the west, the sun finally drew a curtain over 2023

Thanks Rupali. Even though there weren’t many clouds (and not as dramatic as yours), it looked beautiful.

What a wonderful way to finish the year! It’s fun to walk on any beach and watching the boats and kite surfers must have added to the fun. And to finish with a cocktail and that glorious sunset makes it extra special π

It was a day where we did all the things we love … a walk on the beach, enjoy a cocktail with a beautiful sunset, and sit around a fire with people we care about. For us, this is the best way to end a year.

Relaxation perfection. Wish I could teleport there for a stroll.

From reports we could hear that it’s very cold in the UK (actually in the whole Northern Hemisphere) … I wish I could send you some sunshine! I’d be lying if I said it wasn’t great to end New Year’s Eve with a walk on the beach and sunny weather.

It surely was Diana. Summer in South Africa is wonderful and to be rewarded with such a beautiful day on the last day of the year was special.

Oh my Corna, beautiful and poetic post! Thanks for sharing these stunning photos of your much loved places in South Africa. I hope 2024 is off to a good start and will be a joyous and blessed year for you and Berto.

Thanks a lot Tricia. This is our all-time favourite place in South Africa and it was special to see the start of the new year with family and friends. We also hope that 2024 will be a good year (it seems there will be a lot of challenges, but we are ready for whatever comes our way)! I’m sure this year is going to hold a lot of special moments for you guys as well.

Kite surfing looks so fun, I’ve always wanted to try it.

My husband tried it about a few years back … and his feedback was, it’s a lot harder than one thinks! But the seasoned kite surfers make it seem so effortlessly, right!

I love watching kite boarders. We took lessons in Sri Lanka, but one half day was not nearly enough to be able to do it very well. Maggie

Berto did a two-day course a couple of years ago, but he’s convinced it’s going to take a lot more practice to do kite surfing effortless! But you’re right Maggie, it’s really fun to watch the professional kite surfers. When the wind lifts them out of the water like that, I always hold my breath until they land back in the water again!

What a beautiful last sunset of ’23. The rubber duck…that’s about my level of water activities!

It was probably one of the most beautiful sunsets in 2023 β a bold statement, I know! Haha, yes I’m not a water baby like Berto either – I can paddle kayak (on calm water), but otherwise I’m better off just walking on the beach!

What a wonderful way to spend a day. I love watching kite surfers, Corna, but they always look so far away in my photos. Perfect ending with those skies.

Thanks Jo. Luckily (for us), the kite surfers are always very close to the beach because they are on the lagoon – it’s a different story when they’re out on the sea. The sunset was truly special β such a perfect way to say goodbye to 2023.

‘n Wonderlike herinnering Tannie Frannie. ‘n Wandeling op die strand, pragtige sonsondergang en om dan gesellig saam met familie en vriende om ‘n vuur te sit en terug te kyk oor ‘n jaar wat was … dis die eenvoudige dinge in die lewe wat ons die grootste vreugde gee.

A glorious sunset! It is an absolutely magical way to see the old year off: beach, sunset, cocktails. Must add this experience to my to-do list as I cannot recall a similar New Year’s Eve in my life.

We’re so used to a hot New Year’s Eve, that we take it for granted. But one day we are going to visit a (cold) country at the end of a year so that we can see snow over December! However, we love to put our feet into the warm sea sand, having a cocktail while the sun sets for the last time in the year … for us, that just feels right π.
