December 2023
It’s time to get back into nature. Saturday looked like a good day to return to our favourite hiking farm, Emerald Vale Brewery.
Although the sky was clear, thunderstorms were forecast for around lunchtime. It was very humid when we arrived at the farm and we realised that we would have limited time to walk before the thunderstorm broke out.
So, we chose the shortest route – only 4.8km (3 miles) with the lovely name of Naturwanderweg (‘Nature Walk’).

Start of the Naturwanderweg
It may appear dry, but the rainy season has only just begun and we expect the farm to be lush green soon.

Soon the farm will be green again
After first walking downhill and then uphill again, we walked past one of the farm dams. It was quiet in the early morning and there was hardly a ripple to be detected on the water.

We followed the yellow arrow
Even though the field is currently dry, we saw many flowers hidden among the grass. There were little lilac coloured flowers everywhere and it might just be some kind of weed, but it was still nice to see some unexpected colour.
Thanks to fellow blogger Jude in Cornwall, UK (https://cornwallincolours.blog/) who identified the flower as Senecio macrocephalus.

The footpath ran through the trees and then crossed a small river. I’m guessing that this very path is going to be very muddy later today.

Low water bride over a small river
We walked quite a distance along a fence before we came to a larger river course. Here we had to walk carefully so as not to step in the water.

Over a bigger river
There were some cows between us and the road we had to follow. And while the larger cows didn’t seem terribly disturbed, it was the young calf that viewed us with a bit of suspicion.

We walked along a long line of trees along the river for another 20 minutes before we found the path back to the farmstead.

And just like that β we reached the end of the trail

We took a last stroll through Emerald Vale Brewery’s lovely garden before driving back home. Even though it was a very short trail, it was nice to be out and about – any day in nature, is a good day.

About 5 minutes after we left the farm, we drove into the thunderstorm. Talk about good timing.
Lavender Blue Market:
The rain took us straight to Lavender Blue Market for a late breakfast. They serve the most delicious ‘mosbolletjies’ and it was just what we were craving.
- βMosbolletjiesβ: This is a traditional Afrikaner or Cape Dutch sweet-bun or bread that is traditionally made in the wine producing areas of the Western Cape province of South Africa. (We are very happy that they also make it here in the Eastern Cape province).

Start with a creamy cappuccino

And then a (healthy) green juice

Our βmosbolletjieβ breakfast
Side note: The green juice was actually quite nice – it probably looks a little suspicious because it’s served in a lab measuring cup.
There are so many places for you to hike! Do the cows ever try to come after you? You both sure lucked out missing the storm and then that amazing breakfast!

Thanks Diane. The best thing about Emerald Vale Brewery Farm is that there are quite a few hiking trails (we haven’t hiked all of them yet). No, fortunately, the cows kept their distance – although they kept an eye on us (and we on them). The thunderstorm was the perfect excuse for that delicious breakfast!

It was fortunate that you just managed to dodge the storm Corna. The trail around the Emerald Vale Brewery Farm looked interesting especially with those photogenic brown cows and your breakfast delicious too. I wouldn’t have been out off my the ‘green smoothie/juice concoction either!

Emerald Vale Brewery Farm is a great hiking destination (and also conveniently close to our home). It is always pleasant to walk among the cows (they are accustomed to hikers and do not even get up anymore when one comes close to them). Ha, the green juice was a little intimidating, but it tasted good. (Berto drank it only after finding out from the owner what ingredients were in the concoction ).

Rainy season’s here too, Corna, but it’s all a bit unpredictable. Glorious one day and then wet. Plays havoc with the washing! We might be puddle jumping on the walks this week.

Oh, the washing – don’t even go there! Here it is mostly thunderstorms (which is accompanied by warm and humid conditions) which is not ideal for hiking at all. Luckily, in two weeks we’ll be heading to our home on the West Coast for holiday, where the rainy season has just passed. So, I foresee glorious sunshine weather.

I’m always happy to see flowers on our hikes (and especially when they’re such a pretty colour). And what a delicious breakfast – it filled the spot!

That’s right, it’s a bird house (and not a bird cage as I described it originally) … thanks for perhaps unknowingly correcting me Maggie! Absolutely, the colourful bird house immediately caught my eye.

I love these “Nature walk” or “Nature trail” names, when you are right in the middle of the natureππ
There mosbolletjies sound yummy, although no green juice for me pleaseπ

And the best part about these hiking trails is that they’re not even far out of the city, yet, like you said, you’re in the middle of nature. The mosbolletjies were a winner … and the green juice … well, it was definitely a surprise!

There’s nothing like a good walk for working up an appetite for breakfast. What impeccable timing for you! That’s funny getting juice served in a lab cup! Do you know what fruit it was? I was always game for trying anything once. In Pakistan we got fresh pomegranate. It was lovely but after a few days my stomach protested because it was so tart. Pretty flowers. They seem to always find water somehow.

I feel less guilty eating a good breakfast (or any other meal) when we were on a hiking trail. There was definitely cucumber and ginger in that juice (I can’t remember the rest, but it pretty much opened up our sinuses). Yes, the flowers were beautiful and a surprise to see – Nature never disappoints me.

What a lovely walk! I must say I am about as distrusting of the cows as they might be, but the reward of mosbolletjies sounds good. ππ

I should mention that I am also very careful when I am near cows – the farm foreman did however mentioned that they are very “friendly” (for what it may be worth). Oh Morag, those mosbolletjies were hot out of the oven β a simple but delicious breakfast.

It’s great to get a look at one of your most recent walks Corna. The whole area looks so peaceful and pretty. Pair that with good food and creamy coffee and hey, sometimes this is what life is all about. I can feel the stillness of the damn, looks like your early morning visit was a shrewd move. The eats and drinks looks great, I’ll take the bacon, Sladja will grab the green juice.

We didn’t walked as much as we wanted this year, but whenever we could, it was always nice to get back into nature. You’re right, the dam was absolutely stunning (it was almost something like the ‘calm before the storm’). I think Berto will take a double portion of bacon in place of the green juice next time … still, it was quite nice (however strange it may have looked). So, cheers to Sladja!

Ek is bly Tannie Frannie het die stappie geniet. Die Oos-Kaap het ons werklik verras met sy mooi landskap – ons is mos glad nie gewoond aan die baie bosse en bome nie.

What can be better than a nice short hike followed by a good brekkie! The flowers BTW could be Senecio macrocephalus. They are one of the first large pink-flowered senecios to flower in the grassveld in early spring and often shows up as large patches amongst the dry grass. From Eastern Cape, Free State, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, Mpumalanga

Yes, I have to admit, it was a good day. You’re right, it definitely looks like that flower (and we’ve seen it all over in patches among the grass). Thank you … and I’m glad it’s not weed (it was just too pretty for that).

Some weeds are pretty though. I tolerate a few. Then there are others that are just thugs.

Yes, I’m really glad we dared to go hiking (we wouldn’t like being on the trail in the thunderstorm). The breakfast was definitely the winner of the day β thank you Tricia.

These last few months have been extremely busy at Berto’s work and we haven’t been able to get out into nature enough. And then, when we can, the weather is against us! But soon we’ll be on holiday and maybe we can catch up on some hiking.

We were very happy not to walk in the thunderstorm – on those farm trails it can get very muddy very soon! The breakfast was a good choice for such a rainy day.

Dit was pure geluk dat ons op hierdie wandelpaadjie beland het … ‘n korte, maar tog so mooi. Ja, die koeie … ek het hulle mooi dop gehou toe ons by hulle verby is (en ook geskat hoe vinnig ek sou moes hardloop om oor die heining te spring as hulle my sou jaag)!

The young calf looks so inquisitive. This looks like a lovely walk before the thunderstorms. It’s so cold in England I haven’t been for a walk in over a month and I’m really starting to get aggrevated from being so cooped up – so I’ve a hike planned next weekend, whatever the weather!

I was slightly wary of the young calf (they are always so brave) and I made sure that I had an eye on him the whole time! Ah, I hope you get your chance for a hike – just put on your rain jacket and make sure a steamy cup of hot chocolate waits at the end.

Yes, thanks to the approaching thunderstorm, we had to hike the short route. And we’re glad we did, because it turned out to be a lovely walk. You and my husband agree on the green stuff (but if you close your eyes while drinking it, I promise it’s actually quite nice).
