We all have these photos … throwback photos!
It’s described as ‘nostalgia-inducing pictures … from a different era of your life”.
Every Thursday we will throw a few photos of ‘way back when’ on our blog. Why on a Thursday? Because it’s just a day away from the weekend … and we love weekends!
You are welcome to join in or just enjoy the photos (#TB Thursday).
Coastal and back roads, West Coast (August 2018)
During a long weekend we decided to drive along the sea from Langebaan to Lambert’s Bay. After spending the night in the Lambert’s Bay Hotel, the next day we drove back to Langebaan on various back roads.
My mom and our friends, Fiela and Frans and their kids joined us on this scenic drive.

Sandwiches on the beach
After enjoying sandwiches and coffee, we hit the road again. Near Elands Bay we took a detour to the beach. It was the start of wildflower season on the West Coast and we were lucky to be walking among the flowers.

Probably an Aunt Eliza (related to the iris)

When we arrived in Lambert’s Bay, we checked into the hotel and then headed down to the harbour. The crayfish boats were anchored and were a lovely picture in the late afternoon sun.

Isabellas – a favourite restaurant
The next morning, we had breakfast at the hotel and then drove back to Langebaan on more dirt roads.

Time to stretch our legs

Train tracks
We decided to drive the road through the beautiful (*)Kapteinskloof. On the way we came across the Banghoek Private Nature Reserve. We never knew about this reserve and were surprised with a road leading to a viewpoint. There were stunning views from the platform and although it was a bit windy, we spent some time here enjoying some fruit.

Wildflowers

It was already late afternoon and we were craving coffee and maybe something sweet. We chose St Helena Bay, one of the many small seaside towns on the West Coast, to enjoy one last treat before returning home.

Sweet treats
As we walked out of the restaurant, I noticed a lovely piece of art. Loosely translated from Afrikaans it would read something like: “Only goodness and favour will follow me … all the days of my life!”

Lovely art
We feel this is the perfect quote to wrap up our Throwback Thursday series.
(*) In 2024 on New Year’s Day, we drove through Kapteinskloof once again, and the scenes looked completely different from what they appear in this throwback post. If you want to read more about that sunny day, click here.

Next week, we’re launching a new and exciting series, which we hope you’ll enjoy as much as we do when we put each one together.
Ah, nice ones…. Great days out in good company. It can’t be beaten! Mel

‘n Lieflike plek!

The views, flowers and everything else looks so beautiful. A dramatic setting to enjoy time with friends and family. Was it cold? The fisherman looks really bundled up.

It was lovely back roads to drive and I’m always happy to see wildflowers 🙂. Yes, we were at the end of our winter and it was pretty cold. The wind at the sea was definitely chilly (and especially for fishermen who stood on the beach all day).

It’s been a good series and you’ve taken us to some beautiful places. Ending on a high!

I’m glad you enjoyed the series Jo. It reminded us of places we had already forgotten about (and want to visit again 😉).

Beautiful – and is that cheesecake in the last couple of food photos? If so, I’m in 🙂

Indeed Hannah … if I remember correctly it was berry cheesecake (and it was delicious)!

We have really enjoyed these posts the last 50 weeks Diana. Saw places we’d forgotten about and if there’s one thing I learned from this series, it’s that you can never take too many pictures 😄. The new series is going to involve a bit of work … but also a lot of fun and rewarding (perhaps more for us than for you).

This was such a neat series and what a lovely final post for it. When I see your pictures of the ocean I can smell the salt and feel the sea breeze. I must say it’s something I miss. Walking among the wildflowers and finding that nature reserve..how perfect. And I love the sign. Look forward to your next series.

You never know what you will see on back roads (you will know all about this 🙂). The sea has such a calming effect on me – even though there are sometimes wild waves. I’m glad you enjoyed the throwback posts with us Carolyn and hope the new series will provide just as much enjoyment.

Thank you Marion, African daisies are such a simple flower, but they are beautiful. Hope you have a good weekend too … we’re expecting loads of sunshine so I’m not going to complain.

How fun to take a scenic drive with your mom and some friends. Looks like you had fabulous weather to enjoy the coastal scenery. The field of African daisies looks gorgeous.

You’re right Linda, it was loads of fun! It was still slightly cool, but when the sun shines, we are always happy 🙂. African daisies are the wildflowers that usually bloom first and die last … it’s such a simple flower, yet so beautiful.

I’m not sure if I enjoyed the ocean/beach views or the wildflowers more, so I will just say I enjoyed them both – a lot! I also enjoyed seeing the view from the private nature preserve. Though it was windy for you, I loved the tranquil scenery. Your TBT posts have been so fun but I’m looking forward to what you’re doing next!

Corna, Corna, it has been too long. After a sadly essential break from the blogosphere I am back and slightly concerned that if I’m going to properly catch up with everyone I might have to take a week off work! I do like the look of these kinds of road trips where you can just pull up somewhere scenic, pull out the chairs and picnic, drink in the beauty and then jump back onto the road again. I appreciate all the details here that come through so charmingly and vividly. The African daises… the thoughtful looking fisherman… vehicles nestled in the greenery down below. Thanks for briefly transporting me to South Africa’s coastal and back roads.

Well, it’s nice to hear from you again Leighton! I hope you’ve rested well (from blogging anyway). Please don’t feel obligated to read all of our posts – it’s probably going to keep you busy all night long. Yes, it was nice to end our TB posts with a short road trip. It’s one of the things we love doing the most! And hopefully we can introduce a lot more new (back) roads to you in the near future.
