We all have these photos … throwback photos!
It’s described as ‘nostalgia-inducing pictures … from a different era of your life”.
Every Thursday we will throw a few photos of ‘way back when’ on our blog. Why on a Thursday? Because it’s just a day away from the weekend … and we love weekends!
You are welcome to join in or just enjoy the photos (#TB Thursday).
Cape Winelands, Western Cape Province (May 2016)
In May 2016 Berto surprised me with a brand-new car. He was obviously very smart with his choice, because the Suzuki Jimny is a vehicle that we both really like!

My new car
Some of you will probably remember the many road trips we have taken in this car. But the very first trip we did, was three days after we got the Jimny and what better place to test it than in the Winelands (and on back roads) around Cape Town.

On farm roads outside Durbanville, northern suburb of Cape Town
Before heading out to drive up some of the mountain passes nearby, we decided it was time for breakfast. Bistro 44 outside of Wellington was one of our favourite roadside restaurants, not only because their food is so good, but also because of the lovely views.

Breakfast at Bistro 44
Bistro 44 is not only a restaurant, but also a deli that sells all the nice goodies you can find at any farm stall. There is a real rustic feel and we relived fond memories of years back when we noticed the vinyl records. The Springbok Hit Parade records were very popular in the 1970s in South Africa (whether it was for the songs or the women in bathing suits, I’m not entirely sure).

After breakfast we drove through Wellington and then turned towards the famous Bain’s Kloof Pass. Just before we got to the narrow part of Bain’s Kloof Pass, we stopped and looked back down the valley (and we also had to get a shot of our new car).

Beautiful view over the valley of Wellington

Our Jimny on its first mountain ride
We drove slowly over Bain’s Kloof Pass and then stopped on the other end at one of the low water bridges – yes, to take another photo of our new car.

On a low water bridge
After stretching our legs, we got back into the car. It was now time to return home via Du Toitskloof Pass. We decided not to drive through the new tunnel (which goes through the mountain), but instead drive over the mountain on the more picturesque old Du Toitskloof Pass.

This old tunnel dates from 1948

Exiting the short tunnel
We stopped at the summit of the Du Toitskloof Pass where one has beautiful views over the 3rd oldest town in South Africa, namely Paarl.

I’m not quite sure which view I prefer
It’s been seven years since we got the Suzuki Jimny and we have so many fond memories of road trips with this nifty little 4×4. And even though we recently added the Toyota Hilux to our garage, I’m sure we’ll discover quite a few more wild places with our Jimny.
Lovely photos and adventure! I had an older Suzuki Siera back in the ’90’s (rebranded in Australia), that thing would go anywhere and most times I was the one towing my mates heavy Hilux out of mud holes 😀

So, what you are actually saying is that we should take the Jimny with us when we are taking the Hilux for a ride 😄. I like that! Our Jimny has never let us down (and we’ve driven it on many rough roads).

Yep, put it in the tray… it would almost fit 😉 They are a great little car, my fun ended when I rolled it on an unfamiliar dirt road – and I wasn’t going fast 😞

Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about your Suzuki. We found out early on that when the Jimny is not fully loaded, it is all over the road. So we usually drive at a snail’s pace on dirt roads (not that it can drive terribly fast). The Hilux has a tow bar – we’ll take the Jimny with us next time, just in case 😉.

Nothing as fun as a road trip and a new-car smell.

That’s true John! And although we’ve driven the Jimny on a lot of rough roads over the past seven years, it still looks great … the only thing that bothers us is the lack of luggage space!

Daai voertuie kos meer as my huis en kar saam.

Ek’s baie erg oor daardie karretjie van my!

You found some stunning places to visit while breaking in your new Jimny. South Africa looks so pretty, I would like to visit someday. Terry has been there once on business and loved it; I’m sure I could convince him to return. Lovely post Corna!

The landscape around Cape Town is truly beautiful – nice dirt roads and mountain passes which were ideal for testing my new Jimny 🙂. Oh yes, I’m sure Terry wouldn’t mind coming to South Africa with you one more time …

Haha 😄 … it felt that way! I love to stand on a mountain/hill and look over the valley (and it’s easier if a car can go there than when you walk yourself)!

What a wonderful car to get… And perfect for travel and to be able to get around to all the lovely places you like going to.

Yes, the Jimny is perfect for where we want to go! Over the years we have learned to pack small and little. With Berto’s new bakkie, I can’t believe how much space there is 😄.

Grant always talks about the big skies of South Africa. Washington State where we lived before is beautiful but because of the tall mountains you don’t see nearly as much of the sky. I had not really thought about it myself but when we drove up from JFK Airport the sky was suddenly open and we both cheered. I say again, South Africa is so beautiful. Nice car too and nice hubby too!

The sky in South Africa is vast with such an intense blue … I love it. It’s always the one thing I miss the most when we travel abroad. Thank you, I think South Africa has a natural beauty – despite our (many) problems, I love my country. And yes, I can’t complain too much about my car (or my husband) 😉.

Thanks Hannah 🌸. Perfect indeed … the toiletry bag just has to be very small, because space is limited!

Lovely post, Corna! It seems like a wonderful road trip and the perfect initiation for your new Jimny. Once again your photos are very enticing, the landscape is spectacular.

Thanks Leighton. The winelands in and around Cape Town are lovely. I now wish we drove around more while we stayed there! But I think the Jimny has driven quite a lot of those lovely roads!

What a nice surprise! It sounds like your first road trip in the Jimny was a success. The scenery (and weather) look beautiful.

Probably my best gift yet! And you’re right Linda, it was the perfect landscape (and day) to test my Jimny.

The views from these two passes are always spectacular on a sunny day. Haha 😄, I don’t know many technical details about the Jimny … but I know it drives very nice!
