August 2023
As promised in our previous post, we would like to take you to the Langebaan lagoon during sunset.

Langebaan lagoon
We love going for walks along the lagoon. During summer evenings you will usually find many walkers here (even a few swimmers at dusk). But since we were strolling here towards the end of winter and the air was still quite cool, we were part of only a handful of walkers.

There were more seagulls than people on the beach

A lone walker
Because we now live on the south-eastern coast of South Africa, we don’t see the sun set in the sea – although I should mention that we do see spectacular sunrises on that side of the country.

Sunset

A golden moment
There was only a slight breeze whispering in our ears. As we made our way to ‘The Paaltjies’, the patterns in the sand caused by the incoming and outgoing tides were lovely to see.

Patterns in the sand at sunset
At ‘The Paaltjies’ we stopped for a few last moments until the sun finally disappeared for the day – behind Schaapen Island and into the sea.

Magical moments

A picture to cherish in our minds
We left the beach and walked back to our car. Winter times are so different from summer here in Langebaan. The streets were quiet and you could only hear a few seagulls and the water meeting the shoreline. It’s actually a wonderful time to be in this coastal town.

Sunset over the town

A last look at the setting sun
When we got into the car, we saw two sheep grazing on the front lawn of a house. The owner was standing in his garden and I asked him if we could take a picture. “Thank you for asking and yes, you are welcome”, he said. We have seen the owner walking his sheep (on a leash) on the beach a few times.

Sheep (not farm animals, but pets)
It was such a lovely evening and we weren’t quite ready to go back home. And you know how it is when you’ve taken a walk, you get hungry. So, we drove to one of our favourite restaurants on the beach, Pearly’s. Berto enjoyed his pizza and I couldn’t resist the bobotie and rice.

Dinner after a stroll on the beach
We have one more of our favourite beaches in Langebaan to show you before we say goodbye to this lovely town. More on that in our next post (read here).
Sunset on your lagoon in beautiful! So funny that he takes his sheep on a leash! Maggie

It’s beautiful, right? Even on a cool winter evening. Yes, the sheep on the leash is quite funny (I saw it once in Portugal and here on Langebaan’s beach was the second time) … there must be something that make a sheep listen when they are on a leash 😉.

Beautiful images. Now I miss beaches.

Thank you Rupali. It would be hard for me to live in a place where there is no beach … although, I know there is also beauty in the mountains and inland.

What a beautiful spot for a sunset walk, or indeed for any walk! I prefer beaches when they’re quieter as this one is 🙂

It’s true, I also like a beach with few people … even in the summer it’s not crowded! But an evening walk in winter is definitely the icing on the cake 😊.

Thanks Jude 🙂. I have to admit it was a special sunset … and we were at the posts at just the right time to take the photos.

Your sunset shots are just breathtaking! It is adorable that the resident walks his sheep on leashes on the beach. I absolutely love avocado, but I’ve never seen it on pizza, so I’m definitely going to have to try it. (I know I’m weird for noticing that one little detail in your wonderful post. 😜)

Thank you so much Kellye. It was an exceptional sunset and worth braving the chilly air for a few photos. It’s actually quite funny to see the sheep on a leash on the beach (or maybe the right word is ‘unexpected’) – they are so obedient 🙂. Oh, if you like avocado, you’ll love it on pizza … in South Africa it’s common to put it on pizzas as a topping after the pizza goes through the oven.

I’m definitely trying avocado on pizza! It sounds delicious.

Thank you Marion 😊. I think because it was a lovely winter day we were lucky with this beautiful sunset. I’m glad we were able to see it before we left Langebaan again.

That sunset with the fence posts is a stunner and I also like the patterns created by the coming and going of waves. I know what you mean about winter in a coastal town. I lived in one for a long time. Some would say the place came alive in summer but I must preferred the feel of winter. We used to walk the cats on leads and I’ve seen geese, pigs even but sheep is new. I approve of them being pets. Tell me, are you ever disappointed in a restaurant or do you manage always to hone in on good ones!

Yes, the posts definitely contributed to give the sunset photos a slight boost 😉. The sheep on a leash are quite funny to see … especially on the beach among other dogs! Ha, no I can’t think we’ve ever been disappointed in a restaurant – but then, we’re not picky eaters (I’m sure that’s why we’re usually satisfied with what’s served)!

Pearly’s is the best! Funny I never gave it much thought about the sunset VS sunrise. But now I remember going to the Easter camp at Carmel in George. We would watch the sunrise on Sunday to remember Christ has risen. 💜🙋♀️

I just can’t get enough of Pearly’s – they’ve had a bit of a ‘face lift’ recently and their food is always delicious! Wow Morag, that’s a great memory from your time at Carmel … thanks for sharing 💌.

Such beautiful sunsets photos!! They are like magic and show what an amazing Earth we actually live on.
I’ve never seen anyone walking his/hers sheep on a leash! Interesting..
Never heard of bobotie but guess it was delicious. The pizza looks tasty 😀

That’s right Anita – it almost felt magical on the beach at that very moment! Ha, yes the sheep on a leash is quite funny 😄. Bobotie is a traditional South African dish (spiced minced meat flavoured with raisins and bay leaves with an egg-based topping) … definitely one of my favourite dishes!

This is a beautiful post Corna. Your photos and descriptions of the patterns the water leaves on the sand are absolutely lovely. It would be so funny to see sheep on a leash; but pets come in many different varieties! 😊
