August 2023
When we were in Langebaan during August, we were treated to bright sunny days. No visit to Langebaan is complete without a walk on the beach of the lovely lagoon.
Just after parking the car, we saw one of the boats of the 4 Special Forces Regiment (Recces) leaving the dock. This unit is the Seaborne Special Forces Regiment in South Africa and receive their military training in this area.

We started our walk from The ‘Paaltjies’. This is the general name for the launch area on the main beach for smaller or lighter boats. It is clearly marked by two rows of poles.

A small boat, called ‘Jan’, is a familiar sight on the beach. We always walk past this boat and think it must have been photographed a thousand times (or more) by beach goers.

We also saw a couple of seagulls rocking peacefully on the water. As it was low tide, a few seagulls found food in some of the bivalves (clams). We also saw how they opened these shells to get to the juicy food inside: Since they cannot crack the shells with their beaks, they instead carry them up into the air and then drop them from a height on a hard surface so it can break open.

Since it was a weekday (and we’re technically still in our winter season) we didn’t see many people on the beach. There were only a few joggers and people walking their dogs – it was actually the perfect day for a walk on the beach.

Did you know?
The Langebaan Lagoon is a large saltwater lagoon. No river runs through it – making it one of only three lagoons worldwide fed by fresh water. The lagoon is an intense turquoise, only 6 meters deep at its deepest and completely open to the sea. (Source: SA-V website)

On the way back to the car park we walked past one of the buoys used as a marker for swimmers. As it was low tide, the buoy was fully exposed.

It’s wonderful to always feel so relaxed after a walk on the beautiful beach of the Langebaan lagoon.
On the way back home, we drove past a couple of traffic circles. The spring wildflowers looked beautiful in the circle and we quickly stopped for a last few photos.

The Langebaan Lagoon is such a beautiful sight that we will show it to you again in our next post. But then it will look completely different, because we went for a walk there at sunset (read here).
Sjoe, die fotoโs getuig van vakansie en vakansiegees. werk mense ooit in Langebaan, ek sou net vakansie wou hou. Pragtige sirkel vol blomme.

How enjoyable to have this beautiful beach mostly to yourselves. The wildflowers are stunning as well. Iโm looking forward to seeing your post of this beach at sunset!

It’s always nice to walk on this beautiful beach when there are so few people (of course it looks completely different when it’s Summer ๐). I’m sure you’ll love sunset here … we took so many photos, I’m having a hard time choosing the best!

We’re there in spirit too – now that we’re back in East London again โค๏ธ. It remains one of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast for me!

That’s the best sort of beach for walking. Loose sand is such hard work! When the sea is calm like that, what a sense of peace. Although I don’t dislike the sight of a rough sea. It just creates a different mood. I lived close to a sea of ocean most of my life. Even if I didn’t go to look at it often, I always knew it was there and I do miss that here. Always loved the smell of the sea and the sound of waves and gulls. “Jan” looks well looked after! But I am stunned….no food? I’ll let you off because the flowers are so pretty!

Yes, I don’t like walking on soft sand … that’s what makes walking on this beach so much fun! “Jan” belongs to an elderly man who lives just across the beach and every year during December his children and grandkids come and then they paint the boat (I think they know how many photos are taken of their boat). No food? Oh don’t think that for a moment, from the beach we drove straight to the shop and bought meat to ‘braai’ that evening! But thank you, I’m glad the lovely flowers made up for the lack of food ๐.

What can be better than going for a walk on the beach, especially when the sky is in such a glorious blue colour? The ocean breeze, sand between your toes and the sounds of seagulls. It is relaxing, refreshing, and an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. While the uneven surface of the sand provides a challenging environment for your feet and legs, it is actually a great way to improve your balance and coordination. Thanks for sharing and have a good day ๐ Aiva xx

Walking on a beach, especially that lagoon beach, is always so enjoyable especially at low tide. You have traffic circles there too only yours have beautiful flowers in the middle, we get to look at stone. ๐คฆ๐ฝโโ๏ธ

You’re right Diane, it’s precisely when it’s low tide and the sand is so nice and hard, that it’s very comfortable for walking. I have to say, the traffic circles filled with spring flowers make it a pleasure to drive to the shop ๐.

The lagoon looks so beautiful and peaceful. I’m certain you enjoyed your stroll with just the seagulls and the gentle sounds of the waves for company.

Glad you enjoyed nice weather during your visit to Langebaan. Seems fitting to spend time at the beach when the sun is shining. Looks lovely.

Yes, we were very lucky with the weather. Before we got there, it rained a lot and after we left, it was cold and rainy again … talk about luck! The lake in Langebaan is very reminiscent of the Mediterranean – definitely one of our favourite places in the world!

What an absolutely perfect (wintry) day at the beach made of small pleasures and gentleness. The Langebaan Lagoon is gorgeous, looking forward to the sunset photos. The wildflowers are wonderful, too.

Yes, we certainly couldn’t have asked for a better day to walk on the beach! And it was nice to end with spring flowers – after all, we visited the West Coast during the prettiest season! We want to make a prediction … we think you will like the sunset at Langebaan Lagoon ๐.

Ah, how peaceful and beautiful! We live about 700 miles (1170 km) from any beach, so we don’t get to see the beauty of the coastline very often. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing your photos and tagging along on your beach walk. I love how they plant flowers in the roundabouts too. Ours, which are few, are usually just concrete and ugly. Have a wonderful weekend ahead!

Wow, that’s a long way from the sea! Because we grew up next to the ocean, it is nice to live so close to the beach now. I think Langebaan’s roundabouts may be an exception, you don’t see them everywhere in South Africa … but I think it’s a pretty cool idea ๐ธ.

A lovely place to walk. Had to laugh at the gulls opening clams by dropping them!

You’re right Ruth, it’s a great place for a leisurely stroll. We had to look out for the seagulls’ clams – one almost landed on my head from the sky ๐.
