We all have these photos … throwback photos!
It’s described as ‘nostalgia-inducing pictures … from a different era of your life”.
Every Thursday we will throw a few photos of ‘way back when’ on our blog. Why on a Thursday? Because it’s just a day away from the weekend … and we love weekends!
You are welcome to join in or just enjoy the photos (#TB Thursday).
May/June 2016 – West Coast of South Africa
In our previous TB Thursday post, we told you about the cold and misty conditions we had along the West Coast while camping. That night we were very cold in our tent and when we got up the next morning and saw it was going to be another misty day, we decided we needed a night of luxury (meaning a cozy bed and not in a tent).

Another cold day
On this day we left the Namaqua National Park. But before we left, we had one more stop to make – a visit to the Spoeg River Caves. This site is of particular archaeological interest as it contains the earliest evidence of domesticated sheep in South Africa. Sheep bones found in this cave date back to about 2,000 years ago. The cave is thought to have been used by the Khoikhoi people when they migrated south with their flocks.

As we drove a little further inland to leave the park, we had bright sunshine. It was actually quite warm, but we knew when we drove back to the coast we would see the mist again.

We drove through farm gates in bright sunshine
Our overnight stop was in a small seaside village with the lovely name Hondeklip Bay (loosely translated “Dog Stone Bay”). We stayed in the equally lovely Honnehokke Resort (loosely translated “Dogs kennels Resort”) … you have to love these names!

Wonderful to sleep in a real bed again after more than a week of camp
Hondeklip Bay:
Hondeklip Bay is a popular holiday destination and serves the fishing community. It has a population of about 540 people and at the time of our visit there were two small shops and one restaurant. For a whopping 93% of the people who live here, Afrikaans is their first language, followed by IsiXhosa, Sesotho and English.

Do you also wonder how Hondeklip Bay got its name? Well, apparently Thomas Grace (ship captain) discovered Hondeklip Bay in 1846 and named the place after a rock formation vaguely reminiscent of a dog (you need a good imagination though)!

Die Hondeklip (The Dog Stone). The “ear” was later removed and the “nose” was struck off during a lightning storm
When we checked into our accommodation, the host suggested that we enjoy a ‘braai’ (barbecue) in their enclosed area to escape the cold wind and mist. It’s a lovely place with a swimming pool and unique decor.

Unique decor
While we were enjoying our ‘braai’, the owner’s three doggies came running in to enjoy the heat of the fire. And, very quickly, they made themselves comfortable on Berto’s lap (all three of them). I think it’s appropriate to end this post of our stay in Hondeklip Bay with a photo of these three cuties on Berto’s lap!

In our next TB Thursday post, we leave the ocean behind and travel to the Orange River in the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.

I sometimes struggle to sleep well, even in a bed, so the camping life would be a struggle for me. That bed does look very appealing though.

I have to admit, the older we get, the more challenging it becomes to sleep in a tent. When we camp, there is always a book next to me to read in the middle of the night 😉. But you’re right, the bed on this day was like winning the lottery!

I admire your bravery going camping during winter in the first place! You probably won’t consider doing that in the eastern cape.

Along the coast (here in East London) it’s not that cold … but the minute you go a bit inland – like Hogsback last weekend – you definitely don’t want to be in a tent! We’ve camped along the West Coast many times in the winter, but then you make sure you have the thickest duvet and warm pyjamas (and a beanie, scarf and gloves 😄).

I don’t think my Imagination is good enough to see a dog!

Those dogs are so sweet! What a wonderful place and how luxurious that bed must have seemed after the previous chilly night! Too bad the dog stone formation got beat up. I’m sure I could find a dog face there…a pug maybe.

Oh, we loved the dogs! They were so small, I almost loaded them into the car the next day 😉. That bed was just what we needed after the previous cold night. Well, you and Berto are on the same page regarding that stone looking like a pug … even without the nose and ear!

Nothing is more relaxing than lounging in your tent right after a whole day of activities, but it is so wonderful to sleep in a real bed after a camping trip. I am in awe of Spoeg River Cave – what a fascinating natural structure to explore. Thanks for sharing and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

That warm bed was just what we needed after a few cold nights in the tent! You’re right Aiva, the Spoeg River Caves is a remarkable place – it was a privilege to visit. As always, thanks for stopping by 🌸.

I love the quaint “dog kennel” resort! And I love the little dogs on Berto’s lap.

Ha, we didn’t mind sleeping in a “dog kennel” at all 😁 – it was definitely a notch above our tent! Yes, those little dogs were so cute … they almost went with us to our cozy bed!

How fun! I love how the little dogs made themselves right at home in Berto’s lap. Animals are good judges of character, and picked Berto as a safe place. Lovely!

We love animals (and I think they know it 🙂). We had a good laugh when all three doggies ended up on Berto’s lap … and fell asleep right there!

The Honnehokke Resort looks such a cosy place to stay and I liked the look of your guest room very much and what a trio of lovely little dogs to cuddle and stroke Corna. Hope you have a great weekend. Marion

The Honnehokke Resort was perfect for our first night out of the tent – that warm and comfortable bed was so welcome! Awe, the doggies – we just wanted to play with them (and they just wanted to sleep in front of the warm fire on Berto’s lap 🙂). Thanks Marion, hope your weekend is a good one too – hopefully loaded with sunshine!

I can only laugh at how descriptive some names of places are 😄 … and in Afrikaans they are really good at it!

Good call on ditching the cold tent for a cozy warm bed. That picture of Berto with the three dogs on his lap is priceless!

As you know, we love to camp … but sometimes it’s good to find a nice warm bed (especially after a cold and uncomfortable night)! The photo with the doggies on Berto’s lap is one of my favourites 🌟.

Ek hou net so baie van die beskrywende name van ons dorpies hier in Suid Afrika! Was nog nooit daar nie, lyk na ‘n interessante plek. Ja, ons is nie kampers nie, alhoewel ek as ‘n kind baie gekamp het. My man hou eerder van ‘n warm bed
😀

I’m glad we could introduce you to Hondeklip Bay Henrietta – it’s a very small place on the West Coast and certainly not that well known 😉.
